4-minute short film. You can use your mouse to rotate the camera perspective:

well i guess part 1 of the holodeck is ready, too bad you need disney level money to afford it.
i doubt you will be able to run or jog at speed but dungeon crawling type games should be fine. no more teleport hop mechanics.

Is the 30% added resolution worth it on the Quest3? (compared to quest2).

I'd like passthrough for a variety of reasons. If I can sell my Quest 2, I'll probably get a Quest 3. That's the main driver for me. I'm interested in the Apple headset as well, just not for $3,500 lol.

Gonna need to see the content first but at any rate it would have to literally …. .. …. to shell out that kinda cash.

My thoughts:

1. I've been in the virtual reality game since the Gear VR back in 2015. Had an Oculus Go, HTC Vive, Quest 1, Quest 2, and some other ones. The fact that you can 128gb Quest 2 for $249 is absolutely BONKERS! It has its own app store, the quality is absolutely incredible for the price, and you can hook it up to Steam for VR PC games. So the tech is really great these days for what you get!

2. What we lack is the same issue that killed the Wii: the lack of regular releases of AAA games. It's a chicken-and-egg problem, as big AAA console & PC games make mega-mula, but it's hard to make that much money on a limited number of headsets.

3. VR games also have what I call the "rerun effect" because you kind of get tired of playing them physically as a "lived experience" using your body, whereas I've been collecting SNES game cartridges lately & still love playing old-school Mario & whatnot. So you don't get the same replayability outside of specific games like BeatSaber.

4. AR holds a lot of promise, but I think we need Retina-level quality to make it really work. They just sold half a billion dollars in pre-orders for the Apple version; I'll be scheduling a session as soon as the clamor dies down. I do have some promising applications in mind, but $3.5k is a pretty hard swallow for an entertainment device. I can get a 98" TV for $2k from Amazon lol.

5. I'm curious about what the "killer app" will be. The Verge thinks it will be web browsing. tbh, short of holographic technology, I think tech companies are kind of running out of ideas. Most people use laptops & cell phones these days. There hasn't really been much of anything new in the phone world for awhile. So I'm very interested to see how the Apple headset pans out. Eventually they'll release a more affordable one, as even for Apple fans, $3,500 is a BIG bite to swallow for something so niche.

I could see it being huge for people like me with executive function issues, where I'm forgetful & get distracted easy, and having floating reminders to get me back on task would be pretty awesome, but I'd really rather use like a super-slim AR set of sunglasses for that, you know?

Didn't realize stuff like the Quest 2 was at $250 and Quest 3 was at $500 with passthrough PCVR (what I'm really interested in).

For a $1000 my curiosity can go unsated but at $250 it's an easy b-day gift from the wife and if it's a really meaningful upgrade $500 for Q3 is easy as well.

Any thoughts on what a first timer should go for, is Q3 really 2x the price better if we completely ignore the native apps and focus only on PCVR passthrough?

The quest 3 will be a good upgrade instead of the 2 due to pancake lenses and the resolution sharpness. It should be fine for pcvr as long as you have a powerful GPU. If you are not doing any type of simracing or flying, the quest 3 is great over the quest pro (better colors, blacks, local dimming, and eye tracking which is useful in sims). But the pro is out of question here and is more for enthusiasts. The quest 3 is a much better AR device too and as standalone too.

I have the quest pro but I mainly use it for a military flying sim.

I think for many consumers, in addition to the high price, an important impediment is that there is almost no VR headset that JUST WORKS. Like, put it on and immediately jump into whatever you want. There is calibration and initial setup required. A non-techie used to watching TV is not going to want to go through that pain. The Vive Flow headset really tried my patience when setting it up and probably the worst of its kind. And it doesn't even directly support PC VR. The Quest 3 might be the first headset that is relatively painless to configure for PC VR.

theVerge review of visionpro
"it just works .................. until it doesnt"
field of view is very 1st gen vr, audio is heard by everyone else in the room or you use airpod buds, hand track software is ok but the UI menus and buttons are too small/finicky for the eyetracking granularity, having to look at ui stuff and finger gesture gets tiring (you never have look at your pc mouse in order to use it) if you are using it as an ar desktop display for work . still ignores lessons from early vr best practices on vr sickness. drm issues on screenshoting desktop.

this aint the revolutionary step/product you are looking for [/obiwan voice].
it is better in some areas than other versions of vr out there, but it doesnt reach that threshold of you can just use it and go. i have issues with the external battery, proprietary plug connection to device and fixed cable. this is not a long session low power swap to another battery in a snap situation. the longterm conclusions on weight and the 2 different headstraps will be interesting.

It will still sell a good number. Apple users are so engrossed in their RDF that they hardly use anything that doesn't involve forking over their money to Apple so this VR experience will definitely be a WOW moment for them.

For PCVR, it's probably not twice as good. I get very little usage out of my Quest 2, but I'm a bad case. One option might be to get a lightly used unit off FB marketplace or something like that.

Another option would be to avoid Zuck completely:

I would just wait to see what Sony does with making PSVR2 work on PC. If they do a half decent job, it should be a game changer.

I haven't gotten a Quest because, despite being the obvious choice for most, I refuse to be in the Meta ecosystem. I would love to see PSVR2 on PC. Might be good enough to get me to buy a VR headset finally.

Yeah the PSVR2 should have a long shelf life. Not like the others that keep getting refreshes and then you regret your purchase coz the new one does a few things a bit better.

Plus, it's a Sony!

I have read somewhere that psvr2 would only work on select PC games. So I'm not sure if it's a completely good replacement as a pcvr headset.
