Most of you guys probably get the Buy.com emails but this deal caught my eye. Really not a bad deal IMO for an HD Player when these HD-DVDs are now going for the same or less than regular DVD's.

If you'd taken into account (or discount) of the two free movies. This players is practically given away.
Not only does it play HD-DVD but it too does a nice job on up-converting to near HD quality for regular 480p dvd material.
Too bad I'm stuck with my A2 Toshiba in which I paid more than 3 times as much.
Otherwise I'd pull trigger on this in a heart beat.

This is a rebranded Toshiba HD-A3. Its the exact same hardware. Even the remote is identical.

This is very tempting. I wanted to get a blu-ray/hd drive for my HTPC but this seems tempting, especially for the low price + two free movies. I would still pick up a blu-ray only player but those are $20-30 cheaper than the combo drives.

Yeah, the fact that this upconverts is a steal IMO. I already have a HD-DVD drive to function for these needs or I'd be all over it myself.

If you pick up an A30 or better, the 2.0 firmware will make it 1080p. The A3, sadly, will only do 1080i at best, not that it matters with my 1080i TV

The cool thing is that Toshiba's honoring the warranties on these (well, at least for the Toshiba branded players). f you pick up one of the LG combo's priced around $140 for currently for your HTPC, you'll get 1080p playback and BD as well - probably the best deal on Bluray you'll find, and it'll play those sub $10 HD DVDs too.

That's the whole point. You can pick up all of your favorite movies for a song. While not really on these forums (including my thread, lol) you can get lots on Ebay or search hard and pick up titles for $ 5 - $ 8 each brand new at times. IIRC there are like 500 titles on HD and everyone is unloading them like they are set to explode on Jan 1, 2009....

Isn't that an HD-A2?

It has the flat angled face. The HD-A3 i could have sworn has a rounded face (mine does, along with my D3)

the 1080i/p looks identical on most tvs, very hard to tell. I had the HD-A35 and it looked exactly the same on my 1080p set.

Still looks good to me. You have to go all the way through the process though. And make sure you change it to budget shipping. Looks like there is also a 5% coupon if the 8% does not work for you.....
