I have a few Genoa 9654 CPUs and am trying to determine what to do with them and also figure out how compatible they are with windows. I'm kinda thinking about building a centralized system to handle my 3d modeling and hosting via VM's, which would replace 3 standalone systems I have, but I also do some minimal gaming and was curious how much of a performance hit I'd take on that at 4k...I don't feel it would be significant but I'm hoping to cut down on the amount of different computers I have around the house and lower energy bills lol

I have a 9554 running win 10. My 9654 runs linux. Neither has a sound card. I had a problem using one with win 10, but it was a $11 soound card, so that alone could have been the issue.

That's interesting I currently I have an ae-9 sound card and I'd be hopeful that would work. My goal is like I said is to try to consolidate all my machines down into one with minimal compatibility issues of possible. I already imagine I'll be needed to also add a USB hub as well

I'm curious. How did you end up with a few 9654s if you don't know their uses?

Seems like something one would look into before buying.

My limited understanding is they were insured and paid out for the systems being the shipping on site was the one to drop the system....and instead of shipping these out elsewhere my bin was the cheaper option. Im not sure if the CPUs are all good I mean the motherboards were bent up but the sockets were prestine and flush so idk.

I did have a damaged motherboard, damaged by UPS. It worked, but had several problems, and I got it replaced on a claim. But they are worth almost $1000 each, so $5000 for the pair is certainly worth trying. They are a magnificent CPU, and unless you need 3.5 GHZ or more for all the cores, they certainly have enough cores, memory and PCIE lanes for anybody.

Yea I believe they are all fine tbh I have had other CPUs come through from mishandling and only had a few be dead, it is crazy the amount of e waste companies are willing to generate though. But in any case I'll test these keep one for myself and probably resell the remaining ones. My only hope is that I can still play cyberpunk at 4k lol on top of my consolidation into VM's

maybe it's because I'm old but in my day that was a way of saying the product was hot stuff. stolen or gone missing and hoping no one would notice. happens a lot with tech hardware.

at over $4000 each, that's expensive scrap !
there was a time hd or lowes would write off equipment if the delivery dummies dinged or messed something up like the exhaust muffler of a heavy use vehicle and they'd send you a new one. afaik this silent policy still exists but on cheaper itemds under a few grand. it's easier to write it off and let the customer keep it while delivering a new one than try to repair it while not seeing other damage and knowingly selling a potentially faulty unit and come under action from a state ag.

Touche, I have had scrap go missing from my bins in several locations from bin diving employees or came across scrap that wasn't listed on the scrap sheets that was placed there by people hoping to pick them up after hours, but luckily most site I request my bins be located in the shipping and receiving with camera access. I'm not sure what I have into these chips exactly being I pay by weight and at this particular customer I also pay a yearly premium to be there scrapper.

That is fairly common practice in a lot of places and a lot of these big system builders are selling $100 million plus systems and it is cheaper for them to scrap one rack and build new over refurbish and requalify the rack especially since there are often financial penalties for late systems, underperforming systems, or systems failures within X time frame.

So I just bought a super micro MBD-H13SSL-N and hoping it will be a good fit. There really isn't a lot of board providers I'm seeing for these and was also leaning towards a tyan board but couldn't find much information about them on Google.

Once verifying it’s in working order, sell them. There is currently a back order of Genoa, I’m sure you’d find buyers no problem.

If you want to host a server use the money made from the sale to buy a Zen 3 Threadripper (if you prefer AMD) or a w7-2495X.

I can’t think of a reason for an average Joe enthusiast to own an Epyc 9654 unless you’re using it as a significant portion of your income and even then you’d probably be best served by a Genoa lower down the stack.

Yes I'm not entirely sure what to do with them for I just know I have so many computers around the house doing different things and thought it would be cool to consolidate and have a closet server lol.

Yea once I verify they are functional I'll have to figure outwhat to do with them...I'll be honest I was kinda hoping to figure out how to monetize them for reoccurring revenue and/or find projects I can do with them that one typically can't on a normal PC to expand my knowledge and skillset, but if I cannot or find I don't have the time to commit I'll need to figure out how much I need for them and what they are worth on the open market

We can't talk about it here, but if you are selling them , PM me with a price. I have 3 of the motherboards that you mentioned.

I can let you know what you decide....I'm currently debating about giving the 7 gamers 1 CPU Linus video a try with one of these and see how it goes. Lol

Parts of the system may still be good, such as RAM etc. I would probably part out the system for sale, you should still make great money, especially since you basically found this treasure for free. Your choice if you want to try fixing it to use, but if you already have a lot of systems, maybe better to take the cash win on a sale of parts.

Well it wasn't free I have to pay for the scrap and high value scrap gets a phone call to me prior to any commitments. Basically when I resell or scrap "scrap" i usually aim to make at least 30-50% profit on top of costs. I did count a total of 100+ ddr5 16 modules at 4800mhz which seems like an insane amount of dimms.

Ah I see, so it wasn't you who found it, but it was sold to you as scrap. In that case, I hope you got a good price. Have you tried to see if it works / troubleshoot at all and test?

Correct

Correct, and if all the chips and dimms work on top of everything else I got I could be into these for very minimal costs....and I'll be trouble shooting them Tuesday next week and testing and what not. I have built many gaming and workstations in the past but these epyc chips are next level and I just can't fathom what to do with them being all the things I could set them up for seem like a waste...right now my main idea is to try to make a gaming lounge/workstation lounge.... basically sell on site access and remote access VM's out by the hour with different cpu counts depending on the user requirements and either charge monthly or hourly rates with cost relating to vm core allocations....but idk it's just an idea I've been dabbling with today and seems like something feasible and fun.

easier to put them on ebay. but those are system builders. most of my used hardware are retired datacenter hardware I refurbish myself through odm sources and sell to a distributor I've known for about 20 years who in turn sells them to small biz or small groups needing hardware but don't need the latest and greatest.

btw your go to for epycs and xeons on here will be @Markfw since he deals with them on a daily basis at work and at home. very few have that kind of personal capital to tinker in that price range.

Also @aigomorla has worked with them before I think. I myself have worked with some of the older Xeons, but usually in older desktop boards. Like X99 or X58.
