Gentoo linux a.k.a How I wasted 3 hours!

Ok, I am on the last step of installing gentoo. Here we go, installing grub and now I am finally booting!

Error 15: File not found

Me: Oh crap! I didn't move the bzImage from the /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot directory!
Me: Oh crap! I didn't config grub for the right kernel info then!
Me: Oh crap! Grub certainly won't let me specify kernel /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot for the image because all linux wants me to die!

Is there any way I can make grub work so it detects my bzImage file in the previously stated directory?
Or is there any way I can get access to my root partition so I can move the bzImage to its proper /boot directory?

I really don't want to spend another ~3 hours compiling all this just because I forgot one step. Linux gurus, I need you please!

Ok ... try this.

Boot off the install CD. When you get to the prompt mount your / and /boot partitions.
(same as the install repeated below)

mkdir /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/hdax /mnt/gentoo (replace x with the correct number of course)
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount /dev/hdax /mnt/gentoo/boot

then you should be able to copy /mnt/gentoo/usr/src/linux...bzImage to /mnt/gentoo/boot

You could also use nano to edit you menu.lst file if that is needed ... hope that helps.

If /boot and / are the same partition just hit 'e' on the Grub menu and specify the kernel path, you can even use tab completion for filenames.

You guys saved my life!

I did what you said dalnar and mounted the boot and / dirs and copied the file over. Then I checked my fstab file to be sure everything was spiffy and low and behold, for some odd reason hda3 (my / partition) was shown to be an xfs partition, the default partition. I found it odd that gentoo would have that as a default but whatever.

It's all loaded up now thanks to you guys! Thanks!

remember that /boot is not mounted automatically. you must issue "mount /boot" if you want to copy over a newly compiled bzImage

One of the installation steps is to configure the fstab. It come with one by default that shows a line for each type of filesystem people might use to help them with the syntax. You followed all the directions right?
