Alright, quick rundown of my situation: I have the rock 939dual-sata2. the current ultimate cd from gentoo includes gentoo-sources-2.6.12-r10. The tulip drivers that get loaded has an issue with the ULi M526X integrated ethernet thingy. After a fair amount of searching at 4:00 AM i found that the kernels after 2.6.14 have fixed this problem.

Problem: how do i get 2.6.14 instead of 2.6.12 on the cd? Since i don't have internet on the gentoo os on my computer i can't just emerge it like normal people and i can't find the file anywhere. And even if i did i would have absolutly no clue how to set portage to use that file instead of trying to get to the internet (i attempted to install link2 last night to from a cd... didn't work, or rather, i probably did it wrong so it didn't work)

[edit: is this what i'm looking for?]

[edit 2: thought it might be helpful if i said it was amd64 that i was installing so preferrably i would install 2.6.14-r5 since packages.gentoo.org says its stable]

[edit 3: I think i found something, i'm putting in a new portage snapshot into the cd, hopefully that will work]

Why not toss a spare ethernet card in the computer and use that to emerge the proper driver for the onboard?

You can burn the files onto a CD. Then when the Live CD is booting, use the command
gentoo cache

That way when it is up, you can take the CD out,and put in the one with the correct kernel. Hope that helps.

Thanks guys, i eventually installed the right build of gentoo before i read your posts by saving it to my backup NTFS hard drive (through windows) and loading the portage from there and now i have the gentoo running in 2.6.14-r5 and the drivers seem to work but now i still can't get onto the internet. I'll bring more specific details ASAP but i can say now that when gentoo loads the rc stuff and tries to refresh the network, the driver starts but i get an error messege saying something like "netmount" could not be started and my eth0 is still not showing up in ifconfig I'll try getting the exact messeges soon but i'm going to do more research first.
[edit: alright here's what i got. excuse any spelling errors/capitalization errors, i'm trying to type all this on a laptop.

so when i type rc i get:
*starting eth0
* bringing up eth0
* dhcp
* running dhcpcd [ !! ]
*ERROR: Prolem starting needed services.
* "netmount" was not started"
so i take out the netmount from the rc list and i get the same thing minus the last two lines.

in dmesg i get
dmesg
--clip--
uli526x: ULi m5261/M5263 net driver, version 0.9.3 (2005-7-29)
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:11.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 185
eth0: ULi M5263 at pci0000:00:11.0, 00:13:8f:44:07:a2, irq 185
netconsole: not configured, aborting
--clip--
could it be my network configuration? i'm not completely sure what other files there are but here's the one i'm not sure of:
/etc/conf.d/domainname
OVERRIDE=0
I'm using DHCP, is this what i want? i'm setting it to 1 now and seeing if that works.

That only will apply to the name of your domain. If you want your DHCP server to send it, or have Gentoo set it manualy. I would think that it is your /etc/conf.d/net file that is doing it. Make sure that all the lines in there are # out. You might also want to look on Gentoo's forum site.... http://forums.getnoo.org

the only thing in my /etc/conf.d/net file is (i hope i recall this correctly)
config.eth0=( "dhcp" )
which i got from the gentoo installation manual thingy. I'll try gentoo's forums and see if they have an answer for me. thanks.
