From what I hear its a pretty neat outdoor adventure. Basically its a GPS based treasure hunt. What would be the best way to find out more? Are there teams you can join?

Good site.

I found that most geocaches in my area were robbed.

That sucks. Most of the caches around here are intact. Seriously, sometimes people just amaze me: why steal a tin can full of random crap which has absolutely no value to you? Stupid fucks.

Yep.

I've been caching for about 2 years now! It helps to get me out of the house and get some excercise. I take my 8 y.o. son with me and he really enjoys finding the "treasure". I like it better than "just talking a walk" or hiking as there is an objective to be met and a clear destination. Plus, it coincides well with my other passion, camping with our popup camper (there are caches nearby everywhere we camp).

I used to do it a couple of years ago a lot. I travel for work, so I was able to do some all over the country. Here in Orlando there used to be a lot of video game and movie caches where you were supposed to trade bring a game/movie and trade out one for one. I thought they would all get robbed, but everyone respected the system pretty well. Been a while since I've done one though.

This.

Been doing it off and on for about three years now. It's really great to do it with kids, if there are any in your family or friends. I also like to load up a few when I go on road trips and make little stops along to way to try to find them. I never trade items, just take a peek and sign the logbook. The thrill is in the hunt. Things can get tough under heavy tree-cover where the GPS loses signal.

Urban caching is greatly simplified by a handheld GPS that does street navigation, too.

probably like many of the asshats here, they just get a kick out of being an asshat.

Around here they'd get looted, but usually they were active so someone else or the original owner would replenish. The log book is the kicker though...

My neighbor has one in the tree directly across the street from our house. Drives me nuts some days. I live in the country. We have minimal traffic on our road. So, cars driving by our house slowly get our attention.

I've gone it on and off, noticed yesterday that some one put a cache right across the street from my house. I can't seem to find it though, not having that smiley, bothers me a little, lol.

There's an awesome geocaching app for the iphone which I've been using when I get bored enough. Works very well and it's pretty fun.

Someone stole the ammo can from one of my caches, leaving the log and trinkets in a zip lock bag.

It sounds interesting and cool. Except for the asshats that steal crap. I'll look at that geocaching site.

What do people usually put in the caches?

My ex-coworker used to do it all the time. He actually set up a bunch with riddles and rhymes as clues. Seemed pretty fun.

He came into work one time with a million bug bites on his arms. He said he went and found a cache that someone put candy or chocolate into, and it was swarming with ants ^^. Reminds me of the bobcat xkcd.

Really random stuff, little toys often. There are geocaching coins that you are supposed to put in other caches that you log online and can see where its been, kinda cool. There are some FTF's, which means the first person to find the cache gets some $.

Bugs too...the bugs have a mission usually. You are supposed to take it and then get it to it's next leg of the journey.

Origami dollars are popular in some.
