Geoff's Stats - Update

On Thursday afternoon (Nov 17), around 1600 EST, the tastats.com site will be going down. I don't know if it will be coming back up. I can't do the necessary wiring to put the stats server down in my basement (I rent and need to make holes...). I may be able to go wireless from the basement to the livingroom as a temporary workaround... I don't know if that will work or not. If it does work, remember to point to the ta-stats.com domain rather than the tastats.com domain. Eventually, the stats will either be running off a Dell SC420 that I have running in my livingroom, or they will be moved to a hosted service.

If I can't bring the stats server back online here at home, I'll try to lighten up the databases and move them to a hosted site. In doing so, I'll probably drop several of the currently running projects.

Whether they come back up or not on the existing server, I need to know if there is interest in me working on the BOINC stats, offering what I currently offer in terms of data presentation, along with some new stuff borrowed from other stats pages (different graphs, data, etc).

For sure, if there is not sufficient interest in me reviving & reworking the stats, I won't bother and will focus my attention elsewhere. Your call, TeAm...

Since only 27 people even brothered to vote in his poll Geoff is wondering if all the hard work he has put into the stats is worth it and would like to know if enough people are using them for it to be worth the time and trouble he puts into them.

Please understand these are my words and thoughts not Geoff's .
I think it's a darn shame that someone can put so much work into something and only a handfull of us even takes the time to vote and let the man know we appreciate the work he puts into them.

To be honest, when you first brought this up was the first time I've heard about yoru stats site. I think thats mainly because I'm fairly new and I've been able to get my stats for seti classic (the only project I crunch besides DIMES) from here: http://smokeball.gygabyte.com/setistats.cgi. However, I looked over your stats, and it looks great! I'll definately be using it, if you keep it up, to check stats for whatever I crunch once seti classic ends.

I love the stats, and would really like to see something done in the BOINC area. It would be a really nice addition. Plus, I think Geoffs could add some features not seen anywhere else. I hope you decide to continue!

I like all the stats I can find. I appreciate all the work the "Stats Masters" do. I personally am not familiar with Geoff?s stats. I had always heard about your stats of other projects I was not involved in. I did not know you did SETI Stats. BOINC or Classic? Now that SETI Classic is ending I will most likely become more involved in other projects. Hopefully I will be able to utilize GeoffS's stats more.

Well.... seven responses is somewhat less than I was hoping to see...

After almost 2 years and over 500,000 page hits, the TeAm Stats server goes down tomorrow between 1600-1630 EST.

I don't know when or if it will be back up.

We don't want to lose this man or his stats.

He has been unselfish in his work for this team, for many projects, now that things are looking bleak we need to show him that we are pulling for him.

Geoffs is an Elite member iof this team, he spent months putting the stats together and adding features that we wanted. Now its time to show our support to one of the best damn teammates I have ever had the please to crunch beside.

Did you also consider that many folks outside of TA use your stats? People, that don't come to the forums on a regular basis but still use your stats? In addition to that, TA had a general slump in memebers posting in the forums anway, so I think that 7 active answers is pretty good these days.

I don't think that you should base your answer on the votes in here but on your own decision: do you WANT to continue the server or NOT. It's the same as with the RA rejoining the DIMES team. In the end, it's only up to you, nomatter what we say. See, my yesterday's R@H stats post only got 4 posts although it is one of the "hotter" DC projects right now. But I'll go on posting the stats anyway.

I hope you gonna put that server to a good use after you canceled the stats and do some major crunching on it. I still remember when we donated for it to come alive in the first place.

This will be my last post here for a while. I don't think that 7 responses should be in any way construed as 'good' on any day. My joke post about Ray got more attention that the stats server posts did. If there's little or no interest, then it is what it is and I'll focus my efforts appropriately. The server comes down between 1600-1630 today. Some time tonight, if I have time, I'll try to get it hooked up at home. Since there doesn't seem to be a burning need, I'll prioritize the work appropriately. There will be no new development of the current stats. Once FaD ends, I'll probably shut down that server and make up my mind on how to proceed.

Christian - while it's true that there were significant donations of cash, parts and knowledge in getting that server up and running, the cash, parts and time I put into it outweigh the donations by far. I don't feel there is an outstanding debt here. If I get it back up running on my home network, it will continue to crunch FaD until the end of the project. At that point in time, there will be no compelling reason to keep it running until I make a decision about publishing BOINC stats and my participation in DC in general.

I'll be honest... I am somewhat disappointed and disheartened by the lack of response. I don't even know why there's a lack of interest... I've solicited ideas for improvements, tried to implement as many as possible given that it's a hobby, I've got a full-time job, family, etc... I never heard that they were obsolete compared to other stats, rarely heard they were lacking (well...except for DPAD where I never fulfilled my promise to get their stats right) and when I did, tried to meet expectations/demands. For the most part, you guys have treated the stats with respect and courtesy (some of you, with reverance!) and I appreciate that and thank you for recognizing my efforts.

Personally, I think this is a good time for me to take a step back and take care of some things that need to be taken care of. I'll be signing off for a while. Email will work better than PMs if you feel the need to get in touch with me.

I didn't mean to say that there's an outstanding dept in any way Geoff. If you read it like that, than I'm sorry. I was thinking of the times when TA was just more active and we came up with the idea of our own stats server, we donated, you built, we tested ... it was a good time you know.

I wish you a good time and a free head to make your decisions. After all, DC isn't everything in life.

Geoff, I can't thank you enough for your efforts! I understand the balance between work-family-hobby is a hard one to juggle.

Sounds like I am too late here. I rarely check the forums over here anymore now that I only crunch for TAS so I am just now seeing this thread.

When running a project that your stats cover I have always used it. I would like to take the time now to thank you for all the work you have put into them.

I have been in the situation you seem to be in. I made a good number of small handy scripts/pages for my friends. After a while it seemed like no one used them much and or they were not really needed. After taking some of them down emails started to come in left and right. I believe you will get your answer once everyone realizes what is going on.

I'm sorry that I have been on somewhat of a hiatus recently, and haven't been doing SB stats, but I want to tell you that I still looked at the stats multiple times in a day, and perfer your format to most other stats online.

What he said goes for me! Liked the stats, like the stats writer more!

Sorry I didn't respond earlier, been busy with RL. Geoff, the TeAm is forever indebted to your hard selfless work to write and maintain the stats. This, along with other events marks an end of an era here. SETI Classic is ending, your stats server is gone, and the original TA site is gone.

I can understand your need to take a break. Spend time with the family, other projects, other hobbies. There's been a time or two I needed to step back, take a break, and assess things. But somehow I always find my way back.

We'll be here, and as always we will leave the light on! Just know you will be missed!
