In the 8 years Bush was president, is his legacy one of safety? Simple question.

Is Trump speaking from the margins, or is he finally saying what the GOP couldn't admit to themselves for so long?

IMO, this question is central to the electability of a GOP establishment candidate, let alone Jeb! Reagan has passed into mythology and history, so it's Ws legacy on which the republicans will be judged against.

I think the answer is pretty clear given Jeb! feels the need to hide the Bush name, the leading presidential candidates are all outsiders, and the party structure in the House has melted down into chaos.

Whether you think he could have stopped 911 or not, invading Iraq made things less safe for pretty much everyone.

By the way, not only did Bush-Cheney NOT keep us safe, but the chaos created in Iraq (including all those Iraqi military officers thrown out of their jobs and forced to look for new work), which is widely cited as leading to the creation of ISIS, is the gift that keeps on giving.

This.

I agree. Overall, it was a spark that we decided to pour gasoline all over.

I remember stubbing my toe very badly once under Bush's tenure so I'll have to go with no.

I pretty much agree with this sentiment. I don't see it as a President's job to "keep us safe". That mission is far too open ended and far too easily shortened to "keep us".

His legacy is one of inflating the military complex, growing government, raised spending, widening income inequality, diminishing personal freedoms and privacy. I don't place the blame of the financial crises on him, but his policies did nothing to buck it and only seemed to pave the way for more of the same.

Sadly, take away the inflating of the war machine and you can basically say the same thing for Obama. More disastrous Free Trade. More globalization, more income inequality. He echo's the same sentiment of needing security and protection at the expense of some freedom all while breathing new life into failed policies of his predecessor like with the Patriot Act that should have simply died off.

This is basically why I support Sanders. Even if he got the nomination and even if he got elected, he wouldn't be able to bring about the massive amount of change he wants with Congress wholly bought out by monied interests. But if we can't at least manage that much, electing Bush or Clinton instead (or any other of the bought out candidates) there is basically 0 chance of change.

He sure pushed for that war on Iraq, what a disaster and we are still suffering from the effects.

We should take votes on who we think voted "Yes". I think either John Connor or michal1980. Even though boomerang gave a snarky reply in thread I don't think he voted Yes.

Looks like both of them voted now.

It's so surprising that liberals blame Bush for all that is wrong with the world.

Anyone who thinks that it's a simple case of "If Bush hadn't invaded Iraq, everything would've returned to normal" is foolish.

Really would have been nice if Bush had listened to Clarke's warnings in the lead up to 9/11... Too bad worded statements of the danger from AQ got the same treatment.

Working so hard to equate Iraq with Afghanistan, then giving OBL and Afghanistan the backburner treatment while his handlers had him invade Iraq was the biggest fuckup we've ever had, and it will continue to cost us American lives and money for decades to come.

Worst. President. Ever. Pretty much everything about Bush is an example of what not to do.

Yes I'm sure you hear that alllll the time.

Seriously though, it shouldn't be surprising that liberals and most others blame Cheney/Bush for a lot that is wrong with our foreign policy.
I'd be happy with there simply being no ISIS. I think several thousands of people in the M.E would agree with me.

Where was returning to normal even a question here?
