Whites are allowed to be proud of their history. But being proud of "white" history doesn't make much sense because history as we know it is focused more on whites, and thus we are more familiar with the different groups. So using the term "whites" is too vague a term. Russians, Italians, Irish, etc. all are allowed to express the pride they have for their race.

African history isn't as well-known to the majority of people, so using a broad term such as "African-Amerocan" gives us all the information we need. The only information I'd gain from someone saying they are proud of their Nigerian history as opposed to their African history is that they come from Nigeria.

Asians are focused on a bit more, but we still see the term "asian" used by people who express their pride for their race. But you'll also encounter people proud of being "Chinese" or "Korean", two countries with distinct histories.

I think these reasons and the fact the "white pride" and other such terms were used by groups such as the KKK when racism was at its peak are the reason why whites aren't allowed to be proud of being white.

I think Jerry Springer said it best, in one of his final thoughts.. "How can you be proud of something you had no control over?" In other words, you did nothing to be your ethnicity, so how can you be proud of it?

When I was in college the African American Student Association held a Miss Black University Pageant. I tried to enter my GF, a white girl, in the pageant and a damn riot broke out. They wouldn't let her sign up and got damn nasty about it. At that point I decided to organize a Miss White University Pageant but the school refused to allow it....even though they were sanctioning and financially supporting the Miss Black Pageant. Fair? I think not.

Whatever race only events are all ridiculous and racist....funny though how things like Miss Black Pageants are allowed to continue but Miss White ones are immediately labeled as racist and insensitive. Until we get past all the bullsh1t White/Black/Hispanic/Asian/Whatever garbage we will never be an equal society. So your ancestors came from Africa, Asia, Europe, wherever....big f?ing whoop. You're an American. A M E R I C A N. AMERICAN! No freaking hyphens, no descriptive colors...just AMERICAN.

As long as Augusta National is a private club, they can make the rules up and allow who they want to join. If Martha Burk wants AN to open it's doors to women, then she needs to be prepared to tell all female schools to open their doors to men (very unlikely don't ya think?)

I friend of mine is African-American and is white. His parents (both white) went to Africa on a trip and he was born there. Every once and a while he will say he is African American.

I'm from south Georgia. . .As long as I can remember we had always had "White" and "Black" proms. It wasn't that either group was specifically excluded, but you just knew what group was sponsoring it, and you went to either one, depending on what you wanted. I never heard of anyone being turned away (black or white). There was also the school-sponsored prom, which everyone went to. There was never really any animosity between the groups, it just seemed to be done because "that's the way it's always been done". Everyone seemed to always agree that the integrated prom was more fun. This is no attempt to really explain or defend the practice, just to share my experience.

It's people like Shinerburke who take a stand for what is right. The only people who are making a big deal about racial differences are those who are pointing fingers every time they're offended and calling it racism. Different people do different things, correct. But if it comes down to one race being able to do something based solely on their race and another race not being able to do the same thing based solely on their race, wouldn't you think that's wrong??

Think of it this way...

Nazis were allowed to live and Jews weren't, simply based on race. This isn't right and everybody knows it.

Blacks are allowed to have black-only activities and whites aren't, simply based on race. This isn't right, and everybody knows it.

Same difference. I will continue to stand up for EQUAL rights. Not Blacks Vs. Whites or Asians Vs. Whoever. EQUAL rights means no distinction between races. No government involvement (read: support) when it comes to racially-charged events and propaganda, regardless of race. Our society has turned around completely. If you want life to be equal, don't make a distinction between races. It's the very parties who are making the distinction between themselves and other races that are racist, not me. And not Shinerburke.

Okay, you just contradicted your own point there. You said he was trying to get a white pageant and used the black pageant as an excuse. Then you said there was already a white pageant, miss usa. What excuse did the black usa pageant use? The blacks probably used the same reasoning shineburke probably used, but of course we know what is "PC". Anyways, do you think that his girlfriend should have been turned away? If it was a college sponsored group, then she should not have been. That is called discrimination, but since it's just a white girl its okay. If it was a private group, disassociated from the college, then they have the right to block anyone they want to.

At least the Miss Black Pagent got consent...they were obviously an organized function...they went about the process to make it happen...
