Hey, I didn't say that American beers all suck. But best of the world... come on! Belgium holds that title since the 15th century, and I would bet they will hold it for another couple of centuries at least. German beer is also very good if you like lagers and pilsners.

I think American beer was heading in the right direction before they came out with this light beers craziness. The very idea of light beer is just weird.

A couple of details I left out:

The reason I'm going is b/c my dad is getting stationed over there (Patch Barracks). I'll be there from July 10th til August 15th'ish when I come back to the states to go back to school.

Thanks for all of the advice and I'll definitely make an effort to learn the language. I won't have the ability to drive, but I'll definitely be taking mass transit to get around. Keep the advice rolling.

Getting door to door in Germany, as long as you're not in a rural area, is no problem with public mass transit.

I seem to remember the S-Bahn from Patch (after a brief bus ride) to City Center was pretty fast, easy and scenic...down into the valley through forest and vineyards.

Are you staying at the Hotel at Patch, or other arrangements?

You won't need a car either way.

Yeah, sure... what else? Wine too?

Well, I dunno about the beer (although there are some decent microbrews...I don't go in for any of the big labels), but California wines are certainly world-class, and indeed they regularly beat wines from the Old World in competitions.

Hum.. I personally think some American wine have their place in the sub-100$ range, and I would certainly pick a cheap californian wine over a cheap european wine in that category, as transport costs have their weight, not to mention how international transportation can destroy the wine itself.

Kongsgard is a very fine Chardonnay, and Quilceda Creek's Cabernet is simply great.

But over that price range I still see nothing. There can not be any American Sauternes, no American Brunello, no American Sassicaia. In that league there is no substitute for tradition. Make no mistake, 100 bucks buy you a lot of good wine. But the post was about the best beer and the best wine. And it's still French, with Italian coming close second. And I guess it will always be the case. If you visit a winery in France you'll soon realize why nobody can approach that kind of quality. It's simply something of another time.
