What you mean by "one time usable $10 credit card number "? It can be used only on Verizon product or service only? I am scratching my head hard now.

Yup. Talked with a friendly CSR and got the credit (send via email later). From FW, don't bother calling if Verizon isn't you local telco as this is for Verizon markets only.

Anyone got a copy of this letter? How about a scan, or synopsis of what is says in case I get a hard-nosed CSR.

You don't even need to say you got a letter. Just say you're interested in the DSL..

This was what my conversion was like:

Him: hi i'm jim from verizon(or something like that)
me: hi, I was interested in your dsl..what is your current plan?
him: 29.99 for first month and 49.99 after that
me: cool, I currently have cox.net, think it would be faster?
him: cable is shared by tons of people and dsl isn't so yes
me: is there any installation fee?
him: no, risk free 30 day trial, no contracts.
me: is there any uptime guarantee?
him: i'm a dumbass and I don't know what that is
me: like, if the internet is down for a day do I get a month free or something?
him: oh, we will refund you or something.
me: ok, sounds cool, can you see if I can get it where I am?
him: yeah, what's your phone number?
me: xxx-xxx-xxxx
him: one second..it looks like you have pacbell
me: yeah, is that a problem?
him: yeah, it's illegal to sell you dsl without having verizon phone stuff..
me: oh, what if I signed up for the phone service?
him: that would work, would you like that number? I can't help you with that.
me: sure, that would be great.
him: (some number, i can't remember..didn't write it down)
me: thanks for your help, can I get a $10 credit card?
him: sure let me bring that up

Then I gave him all of my information and he said it would be in my e-mail within 48 hours.

I haven't gotten it yet..probably tommorrow.

Now, anyone got some good ideas on what to buy? I'm thinking some AS3 at SVCompuCycle..or something else..

Don't think you need to worry.

My conversation:

Me: Hi, I hear I can get a one-time use credit card forasking about DSL?
Him: Sure can, where are you from?
Me: Kentucky.
Him: (laughing) Well, I'm not sure why we are sending it to people we can't sell DSL to (Verizon sold to Alltell here) but I can give you $10 anyway.

Why would a local ISP provide DSL on Verizon networks but Verizon doesn't offer it? Afraid to compete with a local ISP? whatever...Verizon sucks...

I just called.. I am a Verizon customer, and I actually already have DSL through them. The guy I got wanted proof that I actually received a letter in the mail, and when I couldn't come up with that (someone please post a scan!), he said sorry, these are only for QUALIFIED Verizon customers that received a card. I asked who the letter was mailed out to, and he said to certain Verizon local phone customers who do not have DSL.

oh well, if someone posts a scan, I'll call back and hopefully get a different CSR.

I can host it if necessary, although all I have to offer is my web server with 128kbps upstream from my DSL at home.. but it's just a card/letter, so I doubt the speed would be too much of a problem.

alchemize:
The reason why Verizon doesn't sometimes compete with a local ISP is that the lines that they need to provide DSL (they've gone pretty much exclusively ATM now) are expensive to run and maintain. If they bring DSL to a new town by installing DSLAM's and such at the CO, then they also have to bring a line into the location to provide bandwidth for the customers. If there is already a local ISP who is established in the area, then Verizon will even go as far as establishing an exclusivity contract with that ISP, allowing them to be the only provider in that area to provide DSL through Verizon's network. They probably don't care anyway; as you may or may not know, the bulk of the charges for DSL goes to Verizon anyway. For instance, if you have a 768/128 package, you probably pay $40-50 per month to your ISP. Verizon gets $32.50 of that amount for just providing the DSL service on the line. The charges go up from here, but at each price point, most of the monthly charge goes directly to Verizon. ISP's who have these agreements are allowed to collect the full $40-50, then every month they get a bill for each DLCI or PVC that is registered as a customer of theirs, meaning that they really only get around $7.50-$17.50 for a basic 768/128 account. So you can see, as long as Verizon just gets customers to sign up for DSL in the area, they'll make most of the money, whether they are actually the ISP or not.

And, believe it or not, there's a lot of people out there who will not allow the phone company to be their ISP. So many people have a deep-rooted hatred for phone companies, it's scary. So maybe Verizon has the right idea not trying to compete in some markets.

Actually, I hate my local cable company (Knology) WAY more than BellSouth! That's the main reason I have DSL instead of cable BB.

But in fairness, it is a spirited competition and a significant billing snafu on the part of BellSouth nearly propelled them into the lead.
However Knology since has done a major channel shuffle for no apparent reason with virtually no notice, and once again they are sitting on a comfortable lead...

Some wouldn't understand (like me), because we were raised after the Mama Bell split. I'd imagine it was different atmosphere with the phone company (IE no competition) before that.

I didn't get the $10 either. My phone is from Verizon, though DSL isn't offered in my area. They ask me if I had the letter in front of me so I could read something off it. The CSR was very nice tough.

I got the $10 about an hour ago. Verizon is my local phone company but DSL is not available in my area. No projected date for availability. I did tell the CSR that i presently use Verizon internet service. Seemed to make a difference in his demeanor.
