Frickin' Frack:

Here's another chat transcript... I think MSN is just totally clueless, but we're going to have to figure this out... This deal is totally FUBAR...

John: Hello Dan, how may I help you today?
Dan: Hi John... I was looking at the MSN Holiday Bonus page, and I noticed that Dell4Me is no longer listed. Am I to believe that they are no longer participating in this promotion, and if so, when did their participation in the promotion cease?
John: That's correct. Dell ended their part in the promotion earlier this week.
Dan: Hang on a second. I placed an order via the MSN link on the page earlier today. Nowhere did it say that the promotion had ended. In fact, it said that it ended December 20th. Am I to understand that I won't receive the rebate?
John: The MSN Holiday Bonus promotion runs through December 19. However, each individual merchant reserves the right to end their participation at any time. Here are the terms and conditions.
I have just pushed you a page
Dan: OK, but shouldn't they have removed the page BEFORE ending their part in the promotion? If I don't receive this rebate I am going to raise hell. How was I supposed to know that it ended early when I placed the order?
John: To check and see if your purchase qualified for the promotion, check directly with Dell using the following link.
Dan: I want to know an exact date that their participation in this promotion ended.
I have just pushed you a page
John: One moment please.
Dan: "Offer good only for online system purchases made through Dell Home Systems between November 17 and December 20, 2000, for customers who came to Dell.com through a link on the MSN network and used their Microsoft Passport Wallet data in Dell?s checkout process."
Dan: That is what I saw when I placed the order.
John: I'm sorry, I'm afraid I don't have the exact date when Dell ended their participation in the MSN Holiday Bonus. Please check with them directly at the above link.
Dan: Thanks.

Yeah, Dell4Me is taken off the MSN list. Seems MSN and the participating merchants both contribute to the promo. I can image how the 20% off boosts the Dell's sale. But Dell seems lose money rather than earn from the promo, IMHO. Anyway, I jumped on the boat long before it ends.

Another question. I bought a lappy for a friend who is subject to the stunning tax. Will he have any problem when he unfortunately claims the warranty? He lives in a different State from mine.

It's notebook... DIMM is for desktops. SODIMM (Short DIMM) is for laptop. The Inspiron lappies use standard PC100 144-pin SODIMMs.

Also no idea if the OnVia Crucial Memory is CAS2 or CAS3. I would think it'd be CAS2 as Crucial only seems to be shipping out CAS2 Micron PC100 -8E parts these days. For those that want to know, Dell's notebooks ship with CAS2 PC100 memory.

Too bad you can't order a home system notebook without ram. I went to small business and they give you the option for Win2K and no memory. If it weren't for the 20% MSN deal I would have gone that route.

I took advantage of the Crucial 15% off deal and picked up (2) 128MB cas2 SODIMMS for my Latitude CPx so that way I can slap my (2) 256MB SAMSUNG SODIMMS in my new i8000.

I wish I would get some sort of "shipping" confirmation other than We estimate that your order should ship on or before 12/12/00. Although we do not anticipate a delay in your order, we occasionally run into unexpected delays in the manufacturing process. If this should happen, we will notify you and provide a revised estimated ship date."

Those of you who order RAM from Crucial.com taking advantage of their 15% off WebPromo and free shipping remember to go through eBates.com for another 5% off.

Although as Braxus pointed out Onvia offers a better deal using their $25 off $100 coupon and free shipping.

Seems lot of ppl here start to receive computers now. I got mine yesterday.
Called CSR at Dell couple of days ago, that guy said a confirmation letter will come with the computer. But I didn't find it in the package.

Anybody got that?

bigmouth - Out of curiosity, which Dell model and which specs did you buy? I just checked my Hotmail and still haven't received my 20% off e-mail confirmation.

56K and 10/100 combo.
WinME

shipped in a few hours. didn't get chance to change HDD. Damn Dell.
I didn't receive any form of confirmation for that damn rebate. MSN and Dell are both messed up.

I just wish you could see the shipping details, maybe it's to soon but I'd like to see all the cities my baby gets to visit before it comes to Papa.

I'm starting to think I made a mistake taking the 4000 instead of the i8000. Mainly because of the video card issue. I'm not a huge fps fan (actually, I don't like them at all), but I'd like to put some games like asheron's call or the Sims on my laptop. Can someone puhlease reassure me so I'll feel better about my purchase?

masashix- I don't like playing game out of a TFT screen anyway. The image on the TFT let me feel empty and fake, whatever V-card you use.

The reason for a laptop is mobility and spacesaving. If you wanna play game, get a real screen. I personalyl is satisfied with I4K already.

I already have a desktop. I would just like to take some games on the road. I can't drag my 17" CRT around with me to do that.

The mod unlocked this for us, so we can continue the discussion of MSN and Dell's weird handling of this 20% rebate. If anyone receives their system and/or some new information, please continue to post here...
