I'm not sure...I think Dell charges shipping for returns but since I was gonna upgrade to a newer Inspiron then all the initial charges to my credit card including shipping will be refunded...I'm shipping the old notebook on Monday.
I ordered this notebook thru the phone so I was charged for shipping...they don't offer the Free Shipping if you don't do it online.
The CSR was kind enough to give me additional discount to offset the shipping charge.

With the Free Shipping Promo...I don't know if returns will be free of charge too.

That RAM is fine... if you look at the datasheets for the Insprions they all use standard SDRAM SODIMMs

REVIEW OF INSPIRON 8000

(good news & bad news ) !

The Inspiron 8000 supports simultaneous display on the LCD and an external monitor, or you can use the monitor as a second, unique display for additional screen real estate. Not that you'll need it though; the 15-inch LCD supports an extremely high 1,400x1,050 resolution. The only possible downside to such great technology is that standard-sized text looks rather small on such a display.

Despite the number of pixels that have to be moved around during video playback at this extremely high resolution, DVD movies were smooth and jitter-free. The tiny internal Harmon-Kardon speakers provide very clear sound, but little in the way of volume. Throw on a pair of headphones though, and the sound is great, thanks to the enhancement of Dolby Headphone support in the DVD decoder.

The Inspiron 8000 features an unusual drive setup. When configuring your unit, you can choose between built-in, non-removable CD, DVD, or CD-RW drives. The unit's Media Bay slot can house a floppy, Zip, or an additional optical drive, as well as a second hard drive, or an additional battery. And because of this three-spindle design, you can have two batteries installed simultaneously and still have access to an optical drive.

The case looks like a scaled-up version of the curvy Inspiron 3800. Rather than offering different colors for the entire shell, Dell sells snap-on color wrist rests in gray, blue, purple, and yellow. The well laid-out keyboard is comfortable, with a set of function keys above the keyboard for launching applications or for DVD and audio CD control. And you won't need to choose
Dell is no newcomer desktop replacement notebooks. Its Inspiron 7000 and 7500 models were fast and highly-capable models, but at ten pounds apiece they were almost prohibitively heavy. With the introduction of the Inspiron 8000, Dell has managed to trim the weight of its desktop replacement system to a more portable 7.9 pounds, while simultaneously delivering a giant leap forward in both performance and features.

Like all Dell systems, the Inspiron 8000 is highly configurable. The system we tested was the current top-of-the-line configuration including an 850MHz Pentium III processor, 128MB RAM, and a 32GB hard drive, and running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition. But the key difference between the Inspiron 8000 and other desktop replacement systems is that is uses a desktop chip set, the Intel 815E, that significantly boosts the system's performance across the board.

All this power was evident on our benchmark tests. Put simply, the Inspiron 8000 is the fastest, most powerful notebook PC we've ever tested. Compared to the Gateway Solo 9300cx, the Inspiron 8000 was incrementally faster (13 percent better score) on everyday business applications, but pulled away on 2D graphics (85 percent better score) and especially 3D graphics, where its score was more than 2.5 times better. In addition to the chip set, this is primarily due to the Inspiron 8000's cutting-edge graphics (the new ATI Rage M4 with a whopping 32MB of SGRAM) and faster hard disk. (The Gateway Solo 9300cx was equipped with an 800MHz Pentium III, 128MB RAM, and the ATI Rage Mobility-M1 graphics chip set with only 8MB memory.)

We did run into one notable performance problem with the Inspiron 8000. According to Dell, due to incompatibilities between the 815E chip set, the system BIOS, and Windows Me, we were unable to measure battery life using our BatteryMark test. Unfortunately, this isn't just a technical glitch, it is also an inconvenience for users because the power-saving SpeedStep Windows applet is not loaded. So in order to switch between full-power and battery-optimized modes, you must select the mode in the BIOS and then either power down the notebook or place it in Suspend mode and then unplug the power supply. In anecdotal testing, we found the Inspiron 8000's battery provided a satisfactory battery life of about 2.5 hours.

your loyalty when it comes to the touchpad versus the pointing stick - the Inspiron 8000 sports both, each with its own set of buttons.

The Inspiron 8000 doesn't skimp on connectivity either. All the requisite connectors are here, including a pair of USB ports, S-video, and -- in a first for a Dell notebook -- IEEE 1394 (Firewire. A mini-PCI slot lets you choose between a 56Kbps modem only or a combo card which adds a 10/100 Ethernet adapter.

The unit is backed by a three-year, next-day on-site warranty, with 24-hour toll-free tech support. The SpeedStep problems give us pause, and we wish the system's speakers could pump out a little more volume, but these considerations aside, the Dell Inspiron 8000 is the fastest, most capable portable PC available anywhere.

Every Inspiron notebook has 2 DIMM slots... If you selected the lowest memory configuration, you have 1 DIMM slot free to use.

SSGTi - That's awesome news! Which configuration did you get?

I also ordered an i4000, can you tell me what you like and don't like about it?

Play any games on it yet?
How is Win Me?
Play any DVD movies yet?
Did you get the 56k & mini 10/100 NIC for an extra $50?

Everything you can tell me about your new i4000 I would appreciate. Sure am glad that I didn't get the POS 3800 though.

REJOICE NEW & FUTURE OWNER OF INSPIRON 8000 children ! all you that ordered a non 8000 should return your system immediately !

Online REview of the sweeet DELL INSPIRON 8000!

It works well with a wide viewing angle, is easy on the eyes, and gives excellent color. It is an LCD we would gladly replace almost any 17" CRT with. It also provides true 24-bit color, or at least something so close we could not tell the difference. Buyer beware: even if the specifications say a notebook supports 24-bit, you do not know that for a fact until you see it with your own eyes. Like we said, this Dell notebook does support 24-bit, and quite well too.

And that support is very important in DVD playback. Without accessing the full 24-bit palette, DVD playback can look downright atrocious. On lesser LCDs, Neo has looked like he needed a bit of Vitamin A and some Oil of Olay, and Morpheus looked quite a bit like a blemished teenager. This is not the case with the Inspiron 8000. The hardware IDCT acceleration of the ATI video also helps in DVD playback by offloading some serious math from the CPU.

We recommend you at least purchase the SXGA+ LCD if you buy an Inspiron 8000. The LCD alone is worth the price. However, there will also be a UXGA screen available. At 1600x1200 over 15", the UXGA screen provides 133dpi! It has to be seen to be believed. LCD technology has surpassed CRT technology in most areas, plain and simple.

Benchmark results.

HDD BENCHMARK

The 8000 blows past the 5000e and 4000 in CC2000 (content creation). The extra 50MHz were likely worth something, but the 5400rpm HD likely helped even more.

WINSTONE99 benchmark

The 8000 once again passes the 5000e and 4000, likely due to its extra 50MHz. These numbers here are in line with desktop performance from a Pentium III-850 Coppermine test system

3dmark 2000 graphic cpu test

The 8000 barely surpasses the 5000e and blows past the 4000 in 3D Mark 2000's processor test. The 4000e needs 16MB of SGRAM to do well in this test, and only the 5000e and 8000 have the memory.

Memory speed test

Think of memory bandwidth as your free taxi-ride home at the end of the night. The scores here are in line if not better than a desktop system running an ASUS P3B-F with a Pentium III-800. Once again, the 8000 manages to move a little bit in front of the 5000e and 4000

QUAKE III Benchmark

Between the clock speed, faster chipset, and AGP 4x, the 8000 blows past the 5000e and 4000. It also runs to higher resolutions.

Direct 3d base game (revolt) benchmark

Re-Volt is a Direct3D-based third person remote-controlled racing simulator. Its geometry and texture size is somewhat limited so the relatively low power of the ATI video should do well. The 8000 clocks in just a bit faster than the 5000e, but the 4000 falls far behind with its inadequate SGRAM.

SYsmark 2000 test

SYSmark2000 takes a comprehensive approach, combining Internet Content Creation and Office Productivity benchmarking into a single suite.
The SYSmark 2000 scores show the 8000 barely edging past the other notebooks. Overall performance is quite good.

BAttery life

Overall battery life is OK, but not great. At 3:01 in ZD's BatteryMark, the Inspiron 8000 falls behind other notebooks in its class. The SpeedStep technology does help battery life. However, since most of the power is actually drawn from the LCD, no matter how power sipping your CPU is, you cannot see amazingly extended life from low-CPU usage.

HELL if i have the $$$ i would get an IBM t21 but at $2078 after rebate this is SUPER BURNING FLAMING HOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww !!!!!!! go 8000 be all end all !

Rossman : I went with the celeron 600 i4000 w/ 14.1 tft, 10gb, 64mb (just added another 64 from crucial), 8 cell bat, dvd, etc.

I had the 3800 before this (returned it, when I saw the msn promo and dell $100, free dvd, free s/h ,etc).

Played Need for speed : porsche unleased, on it and it ran great at 1024x768 (the 3800 could only do 800x600). So the new ati video card definetely made a difference.

Ordered some dvd's from bestbuy which havn't arrived yet, but I tried playing some mpeg-4's (vcd's) and they were great.

The only thing I didn't like so far is the sound. The 3800 had louder speakers than the 4000.

I'm in NY, and it shipped from NJ

SSGTi - Nice setup, and thanks for your input. Sounds pretty positive so far, regarding the sound I'd rather have better smoother video than great sound (that's what headphones are for).

Here's what I got:
Well I am now $1,596.80 poorer ($1,996 before MSN)
here's what my paper weight will resemble:
=================================================
Dell Inspiron 4000 Notebook
Intel Pentium III/700 MHz CPU
14.1" LCD Display
MS Works Suite 2001
64MB RAM
10GB HD
8MB ATI
Tahoe Blue QuickSnap Color Insert
53 WHr Lithium-Ion Battery with ExpressCharge
Internal 56K Capable V.90 + 10/100 Mini-PCI Combo
3 Yr Next Business Day International On-Site Parts & Labor
Microsoft® Windows® Millennium (Windows Me)
Norton Antivirus® 2000 for Windows Millennium
AOL 1-Year Internet Access Service
Deluxe Nylon Case
Free $100 off
Free Upgrade! 8X Max Variable DVD Drive

=================================================
$1,596.80

I'm also glad to hear that the 8MB ATI doesn't do too badly, and I was thinking of maybe buying NFS but first I gotta check out other PC racing games which don't have really steep graphics card requirements. Or I could try The Sims.

Dx-treme,

One thing they didn't mention... the I8K is DAMN heavy! The I5Ke also has a option for a better screen than the I8K.

UXGA is a waste if you don't plan to run the ultra high resolution. By far the i8000 is a more viable solution considering the dual optical drive option, i815 chipset, firewire !, etc.

Time to gloat again, here's what I picked up.

----------

Intel® Pentium® III Processor 800MHz
i815 chipset <-- wohoo

WallyKid - Like John said the MSN Passport 20% off is supposed to expire December 20, 2000 but I think it will be sooner. Last week it disappeared for a few days and I didn't think it would ever return.

If you can live with losing 20% off (up to $500 off $2500) then go ahead and risk it, otherwise I'd place your order right now. "You snooze, you lose".

Hey Braxus, how did you find out that the Dell Inspiron 4000 came with CAS2 PC100 RAM? I'm wondering how well this stick will work with the Crucial memory I ordered (is it better to sell on fleabay or keep?).
