John what a nice setup, you went all out! I'm jealous =P

I myself got the the 4000, but I a little mad about this forum because I ordered on the 26th of Nov. and I read about the memory thing the day the deal was over. I bit my toungue because I didn't want to cancel and reorder again, the lazy bum I am.

Here's my setup soon to be arriving on the 5th =)

Dell Inspiron 4000 Notebook
Pentium III 600
10GB Hard Drive
56k + 10/100 Mini-Pci Combo
8X DVD
26.5 WHr Lithium Ion
1 Year AOL
Golden Yellow Quicksnap

128MB RAM!! UGH...could've gotten the 53WHr Battery and aftermarket ram for the same price

Oh well my total is $1399 after $20 rebate, but right now I'm down $1749....YIKES!

I'm gonna need to Epay a lot of stuff to break even now...hehe

Another question for those who have received the I4K baby: Is the adaptor block two prong-style or three prong-style? I am wanting to buy an APC SurgeArrest Notebook Pro but they apparently have two models. I dunno which one to choose. Also I would like to take advantage of the free shipping at Buy.com.

Not to mention who da hell got such eyesight to read those text on a UXGA !
didit get the 5400 rpm 32 gig hdd as i am afraid there might be complication using ordinary HDD for upgrade later on. also did not get the internal CDRW asexternal USB CDRW (~$120) would be more versatile (switching between my ibm thinkpad , the dell and my gf's sony vaio desktop).

hopefully the dell 8000 keyboard would come close to my thinkpad 770 quality !

gonna get 2 stick of bestbuy's $89.99 128meg and eg@y off the 2 stock 64 meg.

BTW, the CSR on the phone offered me just $20 for the extra 64meg ! anyone got thiers ? if not call your CSR!

I was not happy to learn that my i4000 shipped via UPS I was hoping for FedEx or Airbone Express instead.

Insomniac - Very nice, I think we got the exact same setup except for I added the Deluxe Nylon case. If I had ordered this same setup in mid October it would have cost me $2,550 not including the MSN 20% off. This time I was able to take advantage of all four offers plus get a P3/700 instead of a Celeron 600. I just hope the 8MB video ram is enough, I think it should suffice.

SSTGi-- when you listen to the headphone, do you hear the background sound? I can hear something. I thought it's the microphone picking up the HDD sound. but after disabled microphone, I still got that sound. (I am using small headphone which inserts to ear.)

when you use mice to drag the scroll bar in any application, you can hear stronger noise. Is this your case? I am thinking of call them up now.

THE DELL DEAL IS DEAD NOW, went to eshop.com. Although it is still listed under MSN , there is no chekout option for wallet on dell's website.

BTW, the biggest fear of laptop owners ........ DEAD or BURNED PIXELS !!

wht's DELL policy on this and for those that got their lappies now, any dead pixels or burned pixels on the SCREEN ????

I believe the standard screening test for all LCDs is if there are more than 10 dead pixels on the screen or 3 dead pixels next to each other it's considered defective.

RossMan: I already have a leather laptop case (Graduation present) and I also bought another color insert. I wanted Blue and Gold to match WVU! I'll see if I have any dead pixels tomorrow .

bigmouth, I get the noise from my 4000 as well. I'm thinking it's line noise from the HD LED since it's right next to the earphone jack and I usually hear it when the HD starts churning. But since I have to turn the volume way down with my earphones it's not that noticeable and not that much of an issue for me. The only other problem I have run into is that my DVD drive is extremely noisey when it starts spinning at higher speeds. The tray doesn't seem to latch properly so it vibrates like crazy and the only way I can keep it quiet is by holding it with my finger. Already contacted Dell about this and they are sending me a replacement tomorrow. Now other than that I must say so far I am extremely happy with my 4000. I got it as an early Christmas present and sort of rushed to get in on the initial deal. After it was ordered I started to regret not getting 8000 for a bit. But after actually recieving the 4000 I don't think I would have been any happier with the 8000. I was very much suprised by how good the display is, DVD's look fabulous, and even Diablo 2 runs pretty well after some tweaking. But I have to say this is my first personal laptop so I don't really have anything to compare it to other than my sister's POS year-old Toshiba. Here's what I got, should come out to about about $1300 after rebate and tax ($100- ouch):

Celeron 600 MHz w/ 14.1" XGA TFT Display
64MB SDRAM
10GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
Internal 56K Capable V.90 Mini-PCI Fax Modem
8X Max Variable DVD Drive
26.5 WHr Lithium-Ion Battery with ExpressChargeT
1 Yr. Next Business Day On-Site Parts&Labor
Storm Grey QuickSnap Color Insert

Will probably upgrade to the 3 year warranty and get the nicer battery down the road as well. Anyone know if there is a time limit on when you can upgrade your warranty, or can you do it as long as your current one hasn't run out?

Gonad, I can stand the HDD sound. But when I drag scroll bar, the noise is not acceptable. I have to use a bigger headphone(ear-cover type) instead of the inserting one. Well, it's not a big issue though. You normally use earphone only when you have something to listen, which will cover the background. Still want to call them up. Several days ago, when I called dell to return the laptop I bot 1 day before MSN, the csr offered me free 64M mem without hesitate. I am gonna see what they will offer me this time. Greedy me!

Dx-treme,

It depends... Crucial memory will always be using Micron memory chips. PNY in the other hand uses chips from Samsung, NEC, Hyundai, and Infineon with probably some other branded memory chips as well (don't have a list). Basically you're taking a gamble... You might get good CAS2 memory or crap CAS2 memory. However, if you don't plan to do anything with the memory and just run it at stock speed, it's all good.

Hi guys I'm just about to order a laptop and the MSN 20% is still up in red in the top left corner of the Dell page and the Passport express button is there upon check out. I have a couple questions if someone can help me with ASAP.

1 I can't find a way to choose W98SE in place of ME like Insomiac did above.

2 Is it ok to get the free scanner & $100.00 discount with using the 20% dicount?

TIA

Texsstar - I think as Dx-treme said above this deal may be dead. If you have already ordered did you see the MSN Passport button during check out? If so, hopefully you clicked it?

Looks like a nice system esp if you get the MSN 20% off saving you $445. BTW nice scanner choice.

Texsstar,

I recommend you getting that modem/NIC miniPCI add-on. It's only 30 bucks. Never know when you'll need to hook up your lappy to a network!
