The previous thread is now over 220, and some of us are beginning to receive the computers ordered from Dell. I think it is time to begin a new thread.

My first question for those who have received I4K: Does it include a 3.5" FDD? I failed to notice it when I placed the order, when I looked at Dell's flash intro again, I found possibly it doesn't come with a FDD. Anyone can give a definite answer?

If it is discussed in the previous thread, please refer it to me. Thanks.

PS Anyone would recommend an external CD-RW for my Dell baby? The cheapest one I found so far is from Buy.com, HP 8220E 6X/4X/4X External CD-RW Dirve, $208.95 - $30.00 + shipping. If you prefer PM, you can get it $10 cheaper at Staples. Any better deals?

Thought the threads only start to get bad (load wise) after 20 pages or so...

Anyway... All Inspiron lappies come with your standard floppy drive.

If you're looking for an external CD-RW for your I4K, your best solution would probably be a USB type burner. I've seen refurbed 6x USB burners for as cheap as $110. But if you were thinking about the CD-RW burning on your lappy the first place... probably would have been best to get it integrated as ext. burners are HUGE to carry around.

CD-RW burning on notebooks in the first place probably isn't a good idea as well... suck your battery dry if not plugged.

Okay, now that the laptops are ordered, does anyone know a resource that tells you how to upgrade the components? I would like a better vid card, for instance.

The only upgradeable from laptop is Harddrive and Memory. There is some vendor who sell the mobile pentium III but upgrading your processor will void your warranty. and Video card is not upgradeable since dell doesn't support the upgrade. Upgrading video card in laptop need modification in BIOS so the new card would be recognized.

upgrading any component on the motherboard besides memory and drive is a bad idea. compatibility, warranty and many other thoughts come to mind.

if you were thinking about upgrading to a pIII from a celeron, just but it upfront.

ok.

Can I overclock my I8K I have coming? If so, how? As easy as upping the FSB from 100 to 133?....

By the way, it's the p3 700.

Thanks.

Uh possibly, but just as likely, your entire laptop will be fried.

If Dell uses a compatible clock generator (I don't see why they wouldn't), you can. But keep in mind since you have a 700MHz unit, at 133MHz FSB, your machine will run at 933! Intel's fastest part is 850. However, since the PC0 stepping CPUs uses a smaller die, 933 might be possible. Just cross your fingers for a PC0. I for one got a 600MHz unit. shouldn't be too hard to get it to run at 800MHz if the chip is the latest stepping. The best way to do it is via hardware but a safer way would to be use softfsb or something similar.

okok, here's what I've found for external drives...

Iomega 4x4x6 External Zip CD-RW Drive @ Staples
199.99
-$40 coupon
=159.99 (free shipping)

Additionally, there has to be something at amazon with their new $50 off $200 in the electronics section. I found a few, but the staples deal is better.

Two questions: Are the USB writers limited to 4X write speed?
Does any external cdrw scsi drive come with a scsi card for my notebook (i.e. a kit)?

Usually only the more expensive ext. SCSI drives include a kit. Those kits are also generally designed for desktop use. If you want to use an ext. SCSI device on your notebook, you'll have to buy a SCSI PC Card which is generally a tad expensive.

If you have an Inspirion 8000, you might want to look into IEEE1394 (firewire) CD-RWs.

Iomega also has a $50 rebate, which cut the final price to $110, lower if you pricematch.

It does support Win2000 now. Check their support forum, or call their support. However, the reviews at Cnet and other places look bad.

Okay,
Just wanted to ask this again since this is a new thread. Is there going to be any type of confirmation thing for receiving the 20% back? Just wondering since I need every penny and if I somehow or another didn't get or qualify for the rebate I'd probably send my system back or something.
Thanks.
