Part 2

Let's try and keep the discussion on track regarding the MSN Passport 20% cash rebate for Dell4Me.com purchases.

If you purchased an Inspiron laptop with only 64MB RAM and would like to add another 128MB without breaking the piggy bank then check out these two deals:
$89.99 128MB PNY SODIMM from Best Buy
$88.82 128MB Crucial/Micron SODIMM from Crucial.com

Check your Dell Order Status here.

UPS Tracking

Please post the following information regarding your Dell order:
1) Dell Dimension L, 4100 or Inspiron notebook?
2) Order date
3) Ship date or expected ship date
4) Rebate e-mail confirmation received date
5) Did you order through the Small Business section to get Windows 2000 Pro? If so, bad bad bad.
6) Did you cancel your Dell order and place a new order? If so, you will probably be disqualified from the MSN Passport 20% cash rebate because your original order will be CANCELLED a new order will be placed by a human being - unless you cancel your order then place a new one online using this link which is probably a better idea.
7) If you spoke with a Dell CSR specifically about the rebate PLEASE provide the phone number, options you pressed, CSR reps name and extension.
8) Did you also order through eBates, Dash or another web portal incentives web site? I did not.
9) If you ordered a Dell Inspiron laptop did you have any dead pixels?
10) Did your Dell ship via UPS, FedEx, or Airborne Express?

UPDATE - I believe the MSN 20% off Dell was originally set to expire on 12/20/2000 but as luv2chill pointed out before this expires TODAY!

**A 20% cash rebate will be issued to qualified Dell Home Systems purchasers based on total transaction amount, including taxes and shipping. Rebate maximum is $500. The rebate check will be mailed to qualified purchaser?s bill-to address, as provided in Dell?s online checkout. Due to processing time, purchaser should allow 8 to 10 weeks before check is received. Customer is disqualified and will not receive rebate if product is returned. Offer good only for online system purchases made through Dell Home Systems between November 17 and December 11, 2000, for customers who came to Dell.com through a link on the MSN network and used their Microsoft Passport Wallet data in Dell?s checkout process. Purchaser must meet the eligibility requirements set forth by MSN as posted on their website at

zeppelin - Installing Windows 2000 will not void your warranty at all. However if you require tech support they will probably require that you re-install the original operating system which came with your i8000. But don't worry hardware wise you are covered, I sure am glad that I upgraded to the 3 years next business day on site warranty, only $149 more for 3 years of peace of mind.

Insomniac - You would think that it's easy to find a car adapter but so far I have only found one at Buy.com for $75.95 and it's only for IBM THINKPAD A20/T20 X20 SERIES. Onvia which usually carries everything has this AC Adapters section which you may want to check out.

Speaking of good laptop accessories, luv2chill suggested the Kensington cable lock for $35.99 just make sure that it works with your laptop. My biggest worry is just leaving my laptop somewhere and forgetting about it.

4) Not only have I NOT received a confirmation, they have TWICE REFUSED to give me one. Here is the first refusal:

"Your order must be placed on an unbroken link from MSN. As long as the link
was not broken you will receive the rebate. You will not receive an email
notification and the rebate will not be reflected on the initial price of
the system, this rebate will be mailed to you at a later date. Please let
us know if you have any additional questions"

5) No
6) No
7) Sorry, spoke to too many people to remember. No one helped. I did speak to one 'nice' CSR named Patricia Cooke, but she just told me that online sales wouldn't give me a confirmation. She also mentioned that I'm not on their 'list' to receive the rebate, yet. WTF?

When you see the 8000, remember to tell us how it looks like.

come ppl in CNET says dell's 15"TFT is way bigger than the base. that makes the whole machine like a mushroom. don't remember it's referring to 5000 or 8000.

I'm on the phone with my CSR John Allen (800-879-3355, option 1, extension 43784, Monday-Friday 7am - 8pm, or Saturday and Sunday, 8am - 5pm).

I placed my order on the 28th and have gotten no confirmation of the MSN rebate as of yet.

So far, he's told me that the initial emails that went out were incorrect because they did not include tax and shipping in the rebate and thus the emails were stopped.

He says they should be coming out again anytime and is checking my order right now. I'm on hold....will update if/when I get more info.

I did not received any rebate confirmation email.

1) My order was shipped yesterday and most people had their rebate confirmation first before their order is shipped.

2) called DELL for 1 hour +, they didint know wht happened

3) When Customer service checked on my the rebate order list (by date) my email add is not there !

Called my salesperson never there, emailed him yesterday no email back, no return phone call.

Finally I called this number and threaten them.

1) ME: "If i do not get my rebate confirmation i will just refuse the delivery by UPS or whoever the shipper is. My main motivation to purchase the dell laptop is the $500 or 20% rebate off."

2) CSR: " I will put a note on your file saying that you did not receive the rebate email and that you called EARLY ABOUT IT. I do see you are qualify for the rebate and i am going to make a note here on your file."

3) Me: " What would that do to me if i am not on the rebate list? I think i am just going to refuse the shipment and cancel my order"

4) CSR: "Why would you want to do that ? I already guarentee you the 20% rebate regardless. If oyu didi not receive it by 8 - 10 weeks call us back and we will arrange it for you guarentee. we want our customer to be at rest when purchasing our products".

5) ME: " Can you send me a written paper or email about this then ?"

6) CSR: "unfortunately i cannot but this is my name and my reference number so when you call in the future for the rebate it will be here in your file."

For those that didi not get their rebate confirmation, call this number and threaten to cancel your purchase. Seems that Dell is so afraid of losing sales.

Well I haven't received one either, but according to MisterX's CSR the reason some haven't received them is because they stopped sending them out after realizing that the amounts didn't include tax and shipping.

So I'm not going to worry about it just yet. If I haven't seen anything by next week at this time I'll call and bitch, but I'm willing to wait Dell out on this one, seeing as they're giving me their flagship laptop model for $1600 out the door.

Update...

As I said, my CSR said that the emails were stopped when they realized the error of not including shipping/tax in the rebate.

However...my name/order/email is NOT on their list for the MSN rebate. I was told to call back Monday to give them a chance to correct/update/doublecheck the rebate list. My order is set to ship 12/14.

Something smells fishy. Or, in the words of some most-famous 'dudes'...strange things are aloof at the circle K....

Dell has had many run-ins with the Federal Trade Commission. I suggest people call to complain so they can track this scam. It appears Dell had configuration links that ended up disabling the discount URL without warning to the consumer who was acting in good faith. Pretty tricky.

I'm surprised no one else has brought this up. But I did some checking and it looks like our rebates (at least mine) will be increasing. Here is the following correspondence I received from Dell this morning (the names have been changed to protect the innocent)...

(I)Dear Ninensei,

Sorry for the confusion. We will follow up in the next couple of days with corrected purchase and rebate amounts. The corrected rebate calculation will be based on your total purchase amount, including any tax and shipping charges you may have incurred. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Thanks,
Dell Home Systems

Subject: Legal issue heads up relating to 20% holiday promotion

Dear Sirs:

I just wanted to let you know that the wording in your MSN 20% Holiday
Rebate promotion and your confirmation appear to be contradictory. This is sure to cause some problems, so you may want to address the issue.

As stated on my holiday rebate confirmation...

Thank you for your recent Dell online purchase in the amount of
$1,398.00, including tax and shipping. According to our records, you are qualified to receive a 20% rebate on this total amount for meeting the eligibility requirements of the "MSN eShop Holiday Bonus" offer! The calculated rebate comes to $279.60.

As stated on my order confirmation...

"A 20% cash rebate will be issued to ... based on total transaction
amount, including taxes and shipping."

While the statement above indicates that tax and shipping is included in the stated price, it is not (final purchase price with tax and shipping is >$1500). Also, the calculated rebate is 20% of the stated price; not inclusive of the tax and shipping.

Based on past experience with rebates, it is my opinion that the choice of words is in error, and that the intent was not to include tax and shipping in the rebate. However, there are those that will take exception.

I appreciate your participation in this promotion and wish you the best with this issue.

Sincerely,
Ninensei(/I)
