Wallykid, my touchpad is just fine on my I4K, but if I try to change the settings to a faster speed it jumps around like you described. I was able to get it at a desireable speed though that works good. Big complaint for the system is the hard to click mouse buttons, hopefully they loosen up.

As for the looks the I4K looks nice, of course that's my opinion. Haven't seen the I8K so I can't say anything about that.

Just went over the December issue of PCGamer magazine... They have a two page review on the I4K, I5Ke, and I8K. Said pretty good things about it. Mainly concentrated on the graphics part though. They did a little benchmark on Q3A. Numbers from the mag...

Q3A 32-bit color - Max. Quality

Inspiron 4000
640x480 - 20.4fps
800x600 - 15.2fps
1024x768 - failed

Inspiron 5000e
640x480 - 27.4fps
800x600 - 19.2fps
1024x768 - 13.1fps

Inspiron 8000
640x480 - 33.7fps
800x600 - 24.4fps
1024x768 - 16.2fps

Q3A 16-bit color - Norm. Quality

Inspiron 4000
640x480 - 44.6fps
800x600 - 32.2fps
1024x768 - 20.5fps

Inspiron 5000e
640x480 - 61.0fps
800x600 - 42.0fps
1024x768 - 27.3fps

Inspiron 8000
640x480 - 62.4fps
800x600 - 44.0fps
1024x768 - 28.2fps

All three machines were outfitted with P3 - 850s and 128MB RAM. Running WinME

As I said on the first thread; 16MB does mage a pretty big impact. Allows you to take advantage of the 128-bit memory bus. 8MB only can only use a crippled 64-bit memory bus.

If I have a Dell Dimension 4100/866 desktop with MS Office 2000 SBE, would I be able to use the "recovery/restore" Dell CDs to install Office 2000 on my Inspiron 4000 notebook also?

Or is it hardware coded to prevent that?

My i4000 was supposed to arrive yesterday but they came by at 6:30 PM, let's hope my friend is at home today when UPS makes their 2nd attempt.

come one JOHN;
i wanted to know if anyone had success massaging his/her dead pixle! what is wrong with that. it seems a little weird.
furthermore, i was curious if anyone actually threatened to return their I-4k for 1 (one) dead pixle and got free upgrades (as was suggested).

just chill, man.

I successfully massaged a pixel. I now have a perfectly working display. As far as sending it back, your call, only you can decide that. They will take it back within 30 days.

Guys, this is so dumb, i think this is a dell touch pad defect, that its touch pad can never go to fast in the pointer motion tab, in the speed section. I really hate to say this, but this sucks.

LuZeR, it seemed like you were looking for a "free ride". You should also ask technical questions in the General Hardware forum.

Has anyone found a way to order anything higher than an 866 Dimension 4100? I want to order a new 4100 but I'd like to have something larger than an 866 and still use the rebate. Thanks!

Help, I ordered an Inspiron 8000 using the MSN passport 20 percent off deal. I never received confirmation email about it. I did get the 100.00 off from my order from dell however. When I made my order on 11/30 and have been reading about all your posts about email confirmations on the 20 percent deal, I decided to call a CSR on 12/8 today. First time I called, about the 20 percent deal they were like... "What deal.. I don't know any..." then I elaborated into detail... she told me that ordering with MSN passport will be given the discounts 8-10 weeks from MSN, I told her fine, but that doesn't explain why I never received an email from Dell, she says talk to MSN. So I talk to a live MSN tech support, he tells me that Dell really does the issuance of the discount, so I call this same person back, this time I get a big hissy fit from her, I told her I need confirmation that I will receive my 20 percent.. she tells me to hold for about 20 mins.. I wait, then she says.. verbally.. her confirmation that if I did order via Passport, MSN will issue a 20 percent off deal from my purchase in 8-10 weeks. she hangs up on me. Is this true? Help me out peoples.

Thanks.

1) call the 1-800 DELL CSR service number and choose option 5 and 5.

2) tell them wht happened between you and the lady CSR.

3) Tell them you are spending such XX amount of $$$ on the inspiron 8000 using the msn/DELL rebate offer in good faith.

4) Tell them you are very uneasy and nervous about the rebate. As a customer just spending XXX amount of $$$ you supposed to feel good and have peace of mind !

5) Ask them for the 20% rebate assurance (email or a note on your customer file (like mine) or

a) YOU WILL NOT SIGN THE UPS or WHOEVER SHIPPER IS (if your order already being shipped). Let Dell take back their laptop.

b) YOu will cancel the order and buy other laptop, IBM or Gateway or whtever where you will ahve peace of mind

Trust me, DELL does not want to lose a business especially a laptop that they already custom configure for you.

Happy Holidays

Guys tell ya what I ordered a 8000 Sunday nite but called Monday to add a zip and after reading about how you shouldn't call and make changes I decided to cancel my order.

I just replaced another order instead of the $100.00 it's now $150.00 off. So if anyone reorders to get the extra $50.00 off remember to print out step 5 of 5 because on the very bottom it says "A 20% cash rebate will be issued ".

WallyKid I checked out the HP's before I decided on a Dell. I know what you mean about the HP I really like the style case (no doudt) of the HP 5195 P3 700 case but the Dell has the performance 815 MB, 32MB VC vers 4 or 8mb, 3yr warr etc also $700.00 cheaper. Hey any chance you have a DC and can post some pics on a site , and how do you like the display and any other comments you would like to share would be nice.

If there's anyone else who recieved thier 8000 now or gets thier 8000 please post any comments good or bad and how ya like the display.

Well I almost got a little pissy after seeing they are now offering $150 off opposed to the $100 when I ordered my 8000. But I checked it out and it looks like they upped the price of the DVD-ROM option by $50 to offset this little extra bonus. So I guess it wouldn't have made a difference on my order total either way. BTW, mine is still slated to ship on the 18th, ordered on the 5th, got the rebate confirmation on the 6th.

How/when do we get the $100 back from dell. (Not the 20%... ) There was a $100 off thing going on when we ordered, no?

You already got it. The price after you clicked on your computer Model was then lowered $100.00. You will not be receiving a check since they already took it off the top before you configured it. You will receive a check if you used Passport to check out, in the amount of 20% of your entire purchase. Wait the usual 8-10 weeks.

Gonad they didn't up the DVD people will save another $50.00.

Check out my old system Here $2227.00 now add to that system what I put on this system Zip $139.00, V90=10/100 $30.00, coor palm $19.00 and that system would have cost $2415.00 and my new system here with same items cost $2365.00.

Woops, must have been looking at the price for the second drive. Since my order hasn't shipped yet should I call and try to get the extra $50 off? Or may that put my rebate in jeopardy?

Gonad - I'm sure you have been following the two previous and this thread closely, I think the consensus is to make sure that your order is NOT cancelled. In the event that it is cancelled make sure that your new order is LINKED/REFERENCES your original order which would show that you are designated for the MSN 20% cash rebate.

Hopefully it's as easy as calling or e-mailing Dell Customer Service, they credit you back the $50 without altering or cancelling your order. Whatever you do remember to write down the name, extension, date of who you spoke with. And ask for everything in writing. You can never be to paranoid.

My i4000 arrived tonight, gonna play around with it tomorrow after it's charged tonight.

If I want to show DVD movies on my TV what kind of cable do I need to get from Radio Shack? My TV has RCA, S-Video and Composite jacks.

When I ordered on Nov. 27 they also had free shipping, so saving 50.00 now would be a moot issue. Gonad if you got in on the free shipping I would NOT cancel your order.

Ross, get an S-video cable.

I didn't get in on the free shipping for this order. I ordered on Tuesday, so as of right now, the only promotional change has been the additional $50 off. Actually, I have been following these threads *very* closely. Am even in the process of returning my initial 4000 in a small part due to my rebate getting kicked. I was one of those unfortunate few that changed their order before it became known that doing so was big no-no. So I know first-hand to be very cautious about this if I decide to persue it. But surley there are some others now in the same boat as me? I know $50 isn't that much, but it will make me feel better about the free DVD upgrade I missed out on this second time around.

Guys/Gals: What are you doing about cases? (As if we didn't spend enough for the notebooks themselves) Did you order the Dell nylon or leather case? What are they like?

I want an urban style case, with good padding, probably want a nylon shell ... and a good brand. Anyone familiar with the Lowepro Madison series? Samsonite, Trager, etc. I am clueless when it comes to notebook cases. Please advise.

Gonad what I did was call Dell on the phone last night and canceled the order and I put a new order in tonight on line going thought MSN. I had the red text 20% upper left thought out the order and clicked Passport Express to start check out. When I came to step 5 of 5 I printed it out and on the very buttom it says "A 20% cash rebate will be issued". So aleast I have something saying I will get a 20% rebate.

I didn't even know about the extra $50.00 off till I reordered, I reordered for the reason stated in my above post.

It's up to you.
