texstar, good for you, i wish i have that kind of buying power. I really like the style of the hp, and i just realized the screen of DELL, for movies playback is just as good as HP. So i guess you got the right now. GOOD luck with you New toy.

everyone;
remember that Dell has a 30 day price waranty.
that means if it goes down in price within 30 days they will give you back the difference.
but, you can only do this once! so dont call up right away.

just a little heads up.

Hey guys.... since (I hope) the 8k are now shipping. I just wanted to hear everyone's opionion for lappy cases. I found a few sites and I wondered if anyone has any of the cases from these companies.

Curtis
kensington
Targus

I found a rating list at Laptop Carry Case Guide.

My opinion: Even though I'm not leaning towards any case, I like Targus's site because it actually recommends you cases based on the laptop you got (it's flawed but it's better than nothing).

I have a question, I ordered the I8000 but because I'm not a gamer, nor do I plan to... I ordered the 8MB ATI M4 ... /w p3-800 128mb what shortcommings will I expect to face when playing DVD's on the LCD screen (definately not gonna replace my Pioneer elite DVD standalone)? to get some idea...with 8MB video config what speed differences can I expect with, say Quake 3 @ 16 bit color on 1024 x768 compared to a setup with 32mb or 16mb @ the same resolution and same color depth?

STAPLES

$89.49 (Retail $119) Then, use any one of the $25 off a $75+ purchase coupons to take it down to $64.49 with free next day delivery (um, if staples does that in your area).

It's the Targus PA350u universal Auto/Air adaptor. It's really nice. Light weight (6.4oz), and reliable. It also includes overvoltage protection (something you DEFINITELY want with a car, since the power delivery is very dirty). I've used it on compaq, sony, and HP so far. Just ordered a Dell powertip. You can read the specs here:

PA350u

Then, write:

Targus Customer Service

And tell them that you bought a PA350u and want to request your free powertip. Ask for the tip that fits your specific Dell. Or, you can call: 1-877-4-TARGUS.

This is a great auto/air adaptor. I've used it quite extensively. And when you decide on a new notebook, you're still ok, just get a new powertip. Seems like more and more airlines are including power outlets, even in their coach seats.

Thanks Apex! I was about to shell out the $100 for the Lind Adapter from Dell. Will this adapter also charge your battery? I would assume it does since it plugs into your notebook.

Apex: I have a couple questions for you. How do you know that is the PA350U? I couldn't see a model number anywhere. Could it be the PA375U? I am going to call Targus later and see if I can find out how long it will take to send the new tip and the differences between the two models.

The MSN 20% off Dell expires today Monday, 12/11/2000!!!

The three current favorites seem to be the Dell Dimension 4100 (P3/866) desktop, Inspiron 4000 and 8000 notebook PCs.

I am talking with a dell representative right now. it's so hard to tell them to honor this $50 dollars off. Gee i've been on the phone with thei CSR for 20 mins and he still won't give me a $50 dollars off. yes he just told me that they can't do both promotion at once. SO i cant' get this freaking $50 dollars.
this sucks....even though i threaten i'll return my inspiron 4000 he just told me the cost of shipping it back and pay the shipping for the new order would be more than 50 dollars. well......whatever

It does charge your battery, yes. I purchased this from Staples awhile ago, and it was the PA350u. The PA375u just has different powertips, so even if it was, you can still use it. In fact, the PA375u is for Dell, HP, Sony, Apple, Gateway, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Sharp, so there's a possibility you won't even need to order a powertip.

It's kind of funny, the Targus Auto/Air adaptor is a lot smaller and lighter than the Dell AC brick, about the size of the Compaq or the HP ultraslim one. Makes me almost want to get the Targus DC adaptor to replace the Dell unit.

I think I found a better deal for a car adapter @ staples... no airplane adapter or line conditioner though. Converts your car cig lighter to 1 standard 120V/140W plug. Should be more than enough for us Dell notebook users as the lappies only use at the most 60W. Price is only 27.99!

Tripp Lite PV 140 Watt PowerVerter with Cigarette Plug Adapter

If you want two AC plugs and 300W check this one out. $42.99

Tripp Lite PV 300 Watt Power Inverter with Cigarette Plug Adapter

They also have the product at Onvia if you want free shipping/no tax:

PV 140 Powerverter 140 Watt 1-Outlet Inverter W/ Cigarette Plug Adapter - $28.18

Tripp Lite PV 300 300Watt Power Inverter 2 Outlets Cigarette Plug Adapter - $43.13

Tripp Lite Info Page

----------------

Linksys also has their Power2Go 140W car unit with a $10 rebate. Has Short circuit, over power, low voltage, automatic shutdown, and 20A/250V fuse protection.

Linksys Power2GO 140 Watt Dc To Ac Power Adapter F/ Automobile - $35.09 ($25.09 after rebate)

Power2Go $10 Rebate

Linksys Info Page

-----------------

If you don't mind used units, a person on e-Bay is selling tons of used Power2Go units in bundles of two for starting price of 9.95 + shipping. Doesn't seem like anyone's bidding on them so you can probably get it cheap that way as well. Since the person is selling them in lots of 2, might wanna find someone locally that might want one.

Dear Mr. XXXXXXXX,

Sorry for the delayed response. We have researching your issue and found
that you will indeed be receiving the rebate. You should receive an email
in the next couple of days confirming the amount.

Thanks,

I called Targus and I found out two things.

1. Apex is right, they are the same, just comes with different tips.
2. They have not tested it with the Inspiron 4000 or 8000. Therefore, no tips are available yet. Now I have quite the dilema...

I shot a quick email to Dell after reading Dx-treme's post and received a reply an hour later qualifying me as approved for the rebate.

Thanks for the info.

Good deal got even BETTER!

Ok, I negotiated a 250.00 price drop and free 64mb RAM on the 7th, but Dell said they are backordered on the memory and won't ship until the 18th. I am leaving on a 1200 mile car trip early the 19th, so I BITCHED.

Here is what happened. The gave me the option to allow the ram to ship, and take an additional 100.00 off, or, if I bought the ram someplace else, they would give me the 100.00 off AND
a Lithium-Ion spare battery. Tried to get them to throw the 3yr warranty in too, but they declined.

I took the second deal, 100.00 off and the spare battery, and ordered a 64mb stick from Crucial.

End cost $864.00 + free scanner + spare battery (now I have two) Not too bad for a Inspiron 3800 with 600mhz Celeron, 10gb HD, 128mb Ram (64 from me) 8X DVD

Guess it pays to bitch. They really don't want the notebook back. I now have a decent laptop for the price of a refurb.

They are about to have someone else bitching at them. I just want to get in on the $50 off promo I missed out on by ordering on Tuesday instead of Friday. I recieved a response today to an an e-mail I sent to them Friday regarding this and they did not even answer my question. It looked like whoever got my e-mail just saw "Passport," and "rebate" and told me to take it up wth MSN. All I want is the freaking $50 deducted from my total without them f*cking up my rebate.

Thanks freeisalwaysgood I followed your advice to get a Dimension 4100 P3 1000 and it worked!! I got the free upgrade to the 19" Trinatron and the P3 1000! Plus various upgrades for a grand total of $1428 after the rebate!!! This got me the above plus 128 pc133 ram, ATI Radeon, DVD, 40 gig drive, SB Live value, Altec Lansings, internet keboard, 3com nic, intellimouse, and the free printer plus $50 bucks off. After posting a request for the MSN20% off on Delltalk I got confirmation there plus a email stating my rebate has been accepted!!! Not bad for ordering 12/10 at 10pm and then getting rebate confirmation from Delll today at 3pm!!!!!!
Thanks freeisalwaysgood I was not going to order because I wanted at least this system and you showed me the way!!!

Don't mention it, Rphman. I'm glad to help someone out for the first time on this board. As I mentioned on my last post: i ordered on Saturday, ready for shipping 6 hour later, and today, i received the rebate confirmation letter. Feel very lucky! I almost ended with buying a Dimension 4100 866M with paying $50 more. eshop on MSN got me really confused at the first place.

Congrats to all who got in on this deal. Even though its going to take longer then I thought I pretty sure I'll be happy with my 8000. I actually have a freind who thinks Dell well offer a 30% discount tomorrow, what a nut.

It looks like they have taken the link out from 20% page but if you go Here and select dell4me on the left side the deal still appears.

Its a risk but its still the 11th on the west cost.

Haha now the "coulda, woulda, shoulda" posts will flood the forum. All those lurkers who were "gonna" jump in on the deal. Well I just checked the MSN Passport page and Dell4Me has been removed, whew what a deal we all got!

loudmouth - I totally agree, awesome deal. Nice choice on the i8000 I'm sure you'll be happy with it. You're getting a quality laptop, awesome hardware, a super frickin' awesome deal and Dell's great tech support.

Your URL doesn't work because it has an https: in it, here's the correct link

So... any others got their I8K shipped with confirmed tracking number[/b]? Mine says it's been shipped, but I'm still waiting for the tracking # to be posted on Dell's site.
