bI just got my DELL INSPIRON 8000 Today... well sort of.

See, when i place my order the salesguy told me estimate delivery date is 12/21. So i have them ship my Laptop to my home address as school is over next week 15th and i am going home for the break.

Apprently these Kiddies at dell decided to build mine up quickly even with the rumored short stocked 32meg ati graphic card

(order: 12/1 shipped: 12/5 received: 12/7). WTF !!!!!!!! HOw the ^$#%#@$#@ am i supposed to study for finals when my mind is on the 8000 sitting at home !!!!!!!!!!!! Can i sue DELL for mental torture ?

Now the extra suspense,

NOW THE ODD THING, some one from the house told me i got TWO packages from dell !!!!!!! ANyone that already received their Lappies from DELL got this same case ??? All i ordered extra was the APC surge protector and $30 64meg ram. Surely that would be included in the same box ??

Hmmmmmmmmmmm ................

Dx-treme, you are really lucky! I've been *itching to Dell that I am really ticked off that my order is shipping only on 12/22 even though I placed an order on 11/28...but all they say is that they can't do anything about it since the 32mb card is back ordered...they said that I could change to the 16mb card and maybe get it about a week earlier...:|

Hey dx-treme...

The extra box is your surge protector. I have ordered from Dell many times in the past and the surge protectors always ship separately.

Dude,
Dont do it, the main reason to get the 8000 is because of the 4X AGP 32 meg graphic card. That baby can support an external monitor ! perfect for the $299 15" tft screen from office max few months back.

With this you can surf the web on the laptop monitor and do another thing on the external monitor ! this can be the main reason to buy the 8000 alone ! Plus dont forget it is 32 meg 4X AGP comparable to the average deskop machines !

Now just hope that there are no dead pixel in the 15" area or else i am gonna raise hell and hope to get $200 credit back for each dead pixel

It seems that most people here are interested in Dell laptop. Anyone had experience on ordering desktop?

Dell is running a nice promotion of free upgrading to 19 inch flat-screen monitor (a $150 value) if you buy PIII 933M or higher. I messed around for a while in Dell website and found that it's even cheaper to buy a 933M (4100 series) with 19 inch flat-screen monitor than buying a 866M with the same configuration. A good deal, ha? However, there is a big problem: if you try to link from MSN eshop, there is no way to configure a 933M 4100 desktop (only XPS B 933M or 4100 866M). If I start from www.dell.com, i can successfully configue a desired system and see the MSN promotion announcement on the left side of that web page. Now I got confused: is it ture that if i can see this announcement then i'm qualified for the 20% cash back, or I still have to link from MSN site? I noticed that many people complained that they couldn't receive rebate comfirmation from Dell. Is it possible that the reason is that they started directly from Dell, instead of a link from MSN?

Anyone has any idea?

Heh... My main reason for getting the Inspiron 8000 was the support for the 133MHz bus.

Hey Braxus - I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 with a 15" TFT screen. The "lid" projects approx. 3/16" past the base on each side, 7/16" over the front, and maybe 2/16" over the back panel (which is an open face panel).

So what can you tell me about o'cing the 8000? Is this "theoretical" or has someone actually been able to oc one of these? Need to know, as I have to decide whether to order the PIII-600 or a higher speed processor.

Woohoo I'm so happy, my I4K arrived this morning. Dumb question but how do I look for dead pixels? When I looked at mine, it looked perfect.

Thanks for all the info from this forum, been a great help. I've been thinking of also upgrading to a 3-year warranty, what is the number to call, and has anyone been able to do it under $150?

taquim: I posted a link to a utility in the second thread although it isn't the greatest (doesn't 'test' the area where the start menu is).

my turn to ask a question... has anyone tried using the MSN promo with Dell's monthly purchase plan or 90 days no payment/same as cash terms?

Yea, I ordered with the monthy purchase plan. I haven't gotten an email confirmation for the promo yet either. Even more discouraging was that I called Dell and CSR told me she had heard from another CSR that the promo was only good on orders placed with a credit card!

Don't worry, I think she was just clueless. While on the phone, I had her look at both the MSN web site and the Dell website to which we were all are referred. After reading the print on both of those pages, she did't know what to think.

She said she would email my order and the issue I'm having with the discount to her manager. I also told her that I would return the laptop if I didn't get the rebate check.

Anybody else with the monthly plan?

taquim,
You can upgrade to the 3 year warranty within the 30 day period starting fm the shipping date of your notebook...the price will be the same. Call the regular Dell phone line and you'll hear the warranty dept as one of the options...hope this helps.

1) 8000i
2) online 11/28; order got bogged down until 12/1 because dell had switched to MSN/Dell.net before changing the AOL service online option
3) 12/21
4) NO Itried to no avail today to get some form of confirmation from CSR that 20% was valid because of 2.) but no dice. They state they have no access to the rebate database although I thought confirmation e-mails were coming from Dell they claimed that they were sent from MSN.Can anyone confirm the origin of the e-mail confirmations?
5) No
6) Not yet I'm considering placing a 2nd order to see if I can get a confirmation even though it will be slightly more expensive witn the free printer/scanner/camera offer instead of the free DVD.
7)didn't get a CSR that would be of any help
8) No, didn't want to risk messing up the 20%
9)N/A
10) n/a

I have a question about the eligibility for this offer. I emailed the msn site about the rebate and they said that my msn account was canceled a year ago. I call them to find out what was going on and the csr said that I canceled it a while ago. Now, did I have to be an MSN member (paying member) to get this rebate? Because I do not have an msn account (unless hotmail counts) but I did have an msn wallet. So will I still get the rebate?
Thanks.

Hmm, my dad in California just told me he called Dell. Basically, Dell delayed the shipping date two times, to something like the 23rd! Which is really bad, because we were expecting to use the laptop on our vacation, which we will be leaving on the 22nd! So, I think he complained to the CSR, and they told him they'll ship it OVERNIGHT, on the 15th!! And in addition to the earlier shipping date, they would give him a $100 rebate! BUT.....now, the order number is different then the original order number. So is that significant? Can I still get the %20 off, even though I still haven't received any sort of confirmation on that. I told my dad to call bad and try to get an email confirmation. The worst case is that the CSR is trying to pull a fast one on us, knowing that by changing the order number, we won't get the %20 off. Because free overnight shipping plus $100 off seems way too generous and seems very suspicious.

I can't answer all of the questions but i know one thing.

DELL DOES NOT WANT THE CONSUMER TO RETURN THEIR COMPUTERS

They are willing to do anything (rebate, free ram ....etc.) to make a sale.

If i find some dead pixel on my 15" inspiron 8000 i am gonna raise hell and threaten to return the unit and cancel my order untill i get some *reward

I noted the following in a post to alt.sys.pc-clone.dell on 12/6

"Since i
hadn't received my Email confirming that I will be getting the rebate I
called Dell up Yesterday and found out something VERY IMPORTANT:

if you have made any changes to your oder inwhich they would give you a new
order # you are going to have to make sure that dell has linked your two
orders togeather in thier system. YOU HAVE TO BE VERY INSISTANT ABOUT THIS
AS OTHERWISE IT PROBABLY WON"T HAPPEN ON IT'S OWN! I hate to be the skweaky
wheel, but i don't want to loose that $500 either. Don't get me wrong. Dell
can be wonderful to deal with, but this is your money and no one will care
as much about it as you will. Atleast, that is my opionin.

ATI Mobility? M4

M4 performs up to 2 times better than the Mobility P first generation notebook graphics engine. Frame rates per second are essentially doubled for the fastest graphics speed for notebooks.

Based on ATI's RAGE 128 PRO graphics engine, M4 dual pipe architecture provides twice the performance of single-piped solutions. The results show more photo-realistic images and finer graphics detail without a performance hit.

Based upon the 3D WinBench 2000 scores for frames/second, ATI Rage M4 128 with 8/16/32MB graphics RAM performs more than 2.5-to 4 times better than the ATI Rage Mobility card with 8MB graphics RAM.
M4 supports up to 1600x1200 graphics resolution providing support for larger and more detailed 2D, 3D and video applications.

Integrated iDCT and full motion compensation, (hardware accelerated) removes the decoding process off the CPU. Eventually, the decreased usage during DVD or video playback will lead to greater battery life. Full frame DVD playback is enabled and shows video quality at its best.
Features a 128-bit graphics accelerator and AGP 4X support.

The ATI Mobility M4 integrates the video controller logic with 8MB (base) of video RAM that can be upgraded to 16MB or 32MB.

Supports Tri-View capability, providing users with the ability to expand their workspace by using the internal LCD and two external displays (TVs, external monitors, projectors) simultaneously. It also supports dual independent displays allowing the user to show two different images and resolutions at the same time.

TRIPLE independent individual DISPLAY !! That is one reasons alone to get the 8000.

I want to configure a 4100 933M desktop to get both free 19-inch monitor upgrade and MSN 20% cash back, but I couldn't find a link from MSN to enable me to configure a 933M or 1G system. Can anyone help me? Thank you very much.

Hi guys, i just received my i8000 today, but i am not able to find out how much ram i have for my Video card, and my touch pad is very bad. It will not be moving correctly if my finger moves too fast. Is this a common problem? i have to move my finger slowly in order to get the pointer to get to the place i want it to.
Another thing i want to point out is that Dell has ugly laptops, and thick too compared to my N3290 HP.
