RossMan,

I just got off the phone with a Dell rep. I ordered my I4000 on 11/28 as well. They had no way to check but did log the fact that I called and mentioned it. Hopefully, it will be enough to avoid problems with getting the rebate.

I got there by starting at t****argains.com and the link supplied. It brought up the Dell page and an MSN link page. I followed the directions and clicked on MSN Passport at checkout so I should get the rebate. Here's hoping...

Just found out a way to make the touchpad work better. go to pointer option, and hit the accelerate button, and change it to fast. Its works much better now.

Rossman: Yea, the 866 was the only one available, but for the price it was a great deal. Especially if you add in all the cheap ram and a plextor drive deals on this site.

Loudmouth: Hey, I just got that same email from the us_promo people.

Ordered an Inspiron 8k around midnight on 12/11

Got a confirmation email, and an email confirming that i qualified for the rebate...
My order's expected ship date isn't until 12/28, and I got a call today that my credit card was declined. I told them, as I had filled out in the form, that its a debit card and has a limit. Oh well... I just told them NOT to cancel my order for any reason...

I just gotta figure out how to get it paid for... and I'm a little disappointed about the ship date, but my 7500 will do till then. I plan to do a little comparison when I have the both of them... Then I have to sell the 7500 (with the rebate, I am basically just trading up )

Great Find... I am glad I made it in time...

TaylorD - It's just not fair that I ordered 11/28 and have yet to receive my rebate confirmation yet you ordered on 12/11 and received yours, haha. Guess 11/28 and 11/29 really did fall into some "black hole".

Here's a few suggestions on how to pay for your i8000. I assume that since you were trying to use a debit card that you have the cash funds in your checking or savings account?
1) Call your bank and depending on your relationship and account rating they may raise your limit. My POS (Point Of Sale - not the same as ATM) daily limit is $5,000 which I never knew but found out when I paid for my i4000 using my debit card. So if you've been with your bank for a few years, don't bounce checks all the time and perhaps have a few different accounts (checking, savings, CDs, money market, credit card, auto loan, home loan, IRA, etc.) then perhaps they can raise your POS daily limit?

2) If you have a credit card with the same bank which also services your debit card then simply do a payment in the branch, on the phone, at the ATM, or online. They would debit your checking/savings account and immediately post a payment to your credit card, making the funds available.

3) If you have a credit card with another financial institution ask if they accept check payments over the phone? Most do. You'll need to have your checkbook with you since the routing numbers are on the bottom of the checks. Or FedEx Overnight a check payment to your credit card company and hopefully they'll post it immediately upon receipt.

4) Apply for a new credit card with WingspanBank.com and receive $75 free credit (check gomez.com)

5) Write someone you know a check and ask them to pay for your i8000 with their credit card (assuming they have sufficient available funds).

Scary, see what six years of working in International Banking has done to me? I hope at least one of these suggestions will help you out ...

Yeah!!!

My beautiful Dell Inspiron 8000 arrived this afternoon. I've played with it a little. First impressions are that it's lighter than I was expecting--even with the DVD-ROM, Battery, and Floppy installed. I opted for the 14.1" screen and with the XGA+ resolution, that is more than plenty of screen room for me. The phsyical dimensions are pretty big--more in highth and width than thickness, but I can deal with that. I installed my crucial 128MB DIMM and that works well. I'm sure at some point this weekend I'll be wiping it off and installing Win2k.

No dead pixels, but my only beef is that the latch isn't working! Does anyone who has received their 8000 have this problem? Does your latch have a spring in it? Do you notice any issues with it at all? No matter what I try I can't get the damn latch to work--but it also doesn't feel like there is any spring in there, but that may be by design.

Anyway, it's not that big of a deal, but you can bet I'll be calling Dell and seeing if I can get something out of it (like an extra battery and/or port replicator).

:| Mine should be arriving today but still in that major strech on getting accoss the nation.

Did get a new confirmation on the 20% off with the new calculation though!

-----------

Dear Benny,

This is a follow up to the confirmation email we sent you earlier. We
have updated our records to include tax and shipping as part of your
order amount. As a result, our records indicate you are qualified to
receive a 20% rebate equaling $450.81 on your total order amount
of $2,254.06 (includes tax and shipping). Remember, rebate maximum
is $500.

Again, this rebate is for meeting the eligibility requirements of the
"MSN eShop Holiday Bonus" offer. This confirmation is for order number
xxxxxxx. If you placed more than one qualified order, you will
be receiving more than one e-mail confirmation like this one.

Providing you do not cancel or return your purchase, you will be
receiving the rebate check in the mail from Dell. Due to processing
time, it may take 8 to 10 weeks from time of order for this check to
reach you.

We will be updating you again by e-mail when we have processed your
check for mailing. Should you have any questions regarding this rebate
offer, please direct them to mailto:US_Holiday_Promos@dell.com

For other service and technical support issues, please visit

We regret that we may have sent you incorrect information earlier. We
value you as a customer and want to thank you again for choosing Dell.

Hi Guys I have a situation here and need your opinion.

I got a I4K on Nov, 27. then I found a dead pixel and background noise. So, I requested an exchange. Today, the exchanged one arrived.

Comparing these two machines, there are some differenc, listed below.

The old one, 1 dead pixel, some noise in earphone.

The New one, No dead pixel, very strong noise randemly come up(once in several minutes, even the audio is disabled!). Not associate with HDD, pretty sure. The NIC and modem combo is from ActionTec, not 3com like the older one. Maybe that caused the noise. Tech says they ran out of 3com one.....
So, which should I take? Tired calling for exchange again.

Another strange finding is:
The new one comes with a row of Ni-batteries, sitting next to the memory socket, with a wire connected to the main board. The older doesn't have! Talked to a tech support, he was not sure. He guessed it's a CMOS backup battery. Is that possibly right? Let's do a vote here, when you open up the back over, how many person see the 6 round batteries sitting there?

Dell sucks too. Do they ever have a production standard?

I just got my new email confirmation of the rebate. I had gotten one earlier without tax and shipping added. This one has the correct total. I havn't made any contact with Dell aside from placing the order and a couple emails to confirm changes. I must say I am 100% happy with all my dealings with Dell on this puchase.

luv2chill: My laptop latch works (4000), but how tight should it be? There is a small gap that allows for it to move some when closed. I would also be intrested in knowing how other notebooks close.

Insomniac--

I am very interested in doing this... but I can't believe that Dell would give you two OSs for free (I mean, I believe you, but that's amazing!!).

What did you say? Were you complaining about your latch and they offered this to pacify you? Because my latch is most definitely defective (does your have any sorty of spring action in it?) but I was planning to weasel an extra battery or port replicator out of them, but I was going to call CS for that. You said you talked to tech support? And they said that they'd send you the Win2k OS for free? Are you sure they're not just sending you some preparation disk with all the Win2k drivers on it?

I'm just curious... please share more details if you can. I was going to format my lappy this weekend and install Win2k, but if I can get a free copy (or even just a free drivers CD) I may hold off.

Thanks

I ordered my Inspiron 4000 (PIII 600) on 11/28 around midnight. Got it already. No confirmation about rebate so I then called, emailed, live chatted, etc. with Dell and MSN representatives soooooo many times. One rep from Dell even told me that it seemed like I didn't qualify for the rebate but I should wait around 8-10 weeks and see. (He didn't care what if I wait that long and don't get the rebate). I was so frustrated and told him if I wouldn't get my rebate I would have to return the computer. He just told me he would ask a customer service rep to call me back. I got a call on 12/13. I asked for return information so that rep asked for reason. I just complained that this rebate system sucked and I just couldn't bare with it. She then called MSN for me and after a while she called me back and told me that the amount of rebate would be credited back to my credit card in 5 to 7 days.

It seems like you have to tell them that you want to return the system, otherwise they just don't care. I was told by Dell reps to call MSN reps, and then from MSN reps to contact Dell more than 10 times. Very bad experience with Dell. (However, their technical rep was so great.)

By the way, my computer works perfectly so far. Feel alright with ram 64mb so may keep it this way for a while. (Is it OK?). Just bought a Gravis Stinger gamepad (CompUSA, $14.99 and $10 rebate) and tried playing some games and it worked not too bad for the price. Any recommendation for the gamepad? (It's winter break, I don't wanna think about work now).

I find it hard to believe that a Dell tech would send you Win2K for free even though your system came with 98SE. Please provide some details...

John: You're right, I have nothing better to do than tell all of the people on this forum a big lie so they all call Dell just to find out I was lying. I have deleted my post so no one else can get help (or misdirected).

It amazes me how quick people are to just assume that. I try to be helpful to the people who also bought laptops because we are all in the same "boat". We all have the same questions/concerns and can help each other out. Afterall, if none of us "knew" each other, we'd have to either take Dell's word or maybe we are lucky enough to have a friend who bought the same thing and we have something to compare it with.

Rphman, they come with OEM disks, don't worry. I have reloaded 98SE, the ME sucks.

Any body answer my questions? Is there some so-called "CMOS BACKUP" batteries or not? Come on, it's easy to see. just open the back over, if you see 1 green bag with 6 botton-batteries inside, that's it. The I4K came on Nov,28 didn't have this while the new system came yesterday had. What is that? Did dell missed one part in my original one?
