Well I just received my I8K... two dead pixels. They are sorta on the side so I'm not really complaining.

Opened the RAM module area and the 64MB SODIMM that came with it is a Mitsubishi -7L part which is PC-100 CAS2. Interesting to note however that the RAM info sticker is labeled as 322 signifying that the EEPROM is programed to run at CAS3 instead of 2. Memory module doesn't look as high of a grade than the crucial one.

The DVD-ROM drive is a Toshiba SD-C2402 which is great news as the firmware can be flashed to RPC-1 (region free) mode. This basically means that you can buy DVD from anywhere around the world and watch them on your laptop without any worries (provided your software solution is also region free). If ya want the DVD Firmware, visit this page and scroll all the way down (assuming Dell uses the SD-C4202 for all Insprions). Make sure to match the RPC-1 firmware with the one that's on your drive. You can find it easly by viewing the settings tab under the Systems Properties. While you're viewing settings for it, might also want to disable the "Auto insert notification" as it will help you conserve more battery power. If auto insert is on, the laser on your drive will go on about every 5 seconds or so to check to see if there is media in the bay.

Under the Performance tab > File System, you might also want to change Typical role of this computer from "Desktop computer" to "Mobile or docking system." This will tell windows to access the hard drive less frequently saving more battery power. Trade off is hard drive performance. Setting it to "Network Server" will slightly increase hard drive performance depending on the application but use more battery power.

The sound as said in previous posts is very staticy. However a simple fix that I've found is just to lower the main volume control and fiddle with the other volumes. One thing that I was disappointed about is that there was no hardware MIDI syth on the notebook (uses that crap MS Wavetable software syth.). If you're a MIDI sequencer, like me, you might consider the Roland SC-8820 which can be completely powered by the USB port. A plus is that it's also very light. I have this syth and I just LOVE it. Anyone wanna hear some of my works?

The BIOS itself is very limited support wise. But if I remember right, you can get a program that will help you unlock some of the settings in your BIOS and perhaps give it that standard BIOS look that many of us are familiar with on our desktops.

The Network card is not a 3Com unit but apparently a Intel one which is generally just as good. Basically Actiontec is using a relabled driver for the NIC. The modem is a Lucent WinModem (yes... software controlled). Lucent softmodems are widely supported from what I hear so finding updated drivers for it is very easy.

This weekend I'll disect my notebook and give ya all more info on it if anyone is interested.

<< What kind of company is LG? >>

My desktop came with a LG CD-RW. I emailed them recently asking what kind of burners they used and the reply stated Sony drives were installed. But, to answer your question, I have no idea who LG is.

LG Electronics used to be known as GoldStar. Made decent enough hardware from my experiences. You can find their site at http://www.lgeus.com/. There is a RPC-2 reset utility for that drive. However, unlike the Toshiba notebook DVD-ROM, the LG DRN-8080B doesn't currently have a RPC-1 firmware. Check this page out for the DRN-8080B RPC-2 reset utility.

Well I recieved my 8000 today. One dead pixel, a wobbly base, and no printer. I am not happy right now and am tempted to return the thing outright. There's no amount they can offer me to keep it that will make up for having to type on a wobbly keyboard and work around a dead pixel on a daily basis. And I dread trying to secure my rebate on a exchange. Bah.

Hey,
I finally got called today by Dell to confirm some info about the passport transaction. I guess they are finally getting around to confirming the people who bought on 11/29 etc...

Just a quick note for I8K users. Dell has recently released a new BIOS. Worth the update IMO as it fixes and adds new things. Most of the I8Ks that have recently shipped come with the A01 BIOS from what I know.

I8K A02 BIOS

The following updates were made the A01 BIOS to create the A02 BIOS:

Issues Fixed:
1. Fixed issue in which an external 5-button mouse may stop responding if the touchpad is used.
2. Fixed issue seen under Windows 2000 in which an "Unsafe Device Removal" warning was displayed after warm undocking from a dock with a printer attached.
3. Fixed issue in which System Setup identified all systems as "Inspiron 8000 ???ST", regardless of the LCD panel attached. The last 1 or 2 letters of the system name correspond to the type of LCD panel attached, according to the following table:
ST ==> 12.1" SVGA
GT ==> 14.1" XGA
X ==> 14.1" SXGA+
LT ==> 15.0" XGA
VT ==> 15.0" SXGA+
U ==> 15.0" UXGA
YT ==> 15.4" SXGA

Enhancements:
1. Implemented changes to reduce fan activity.
2. Added support for ST-Micro and SST firmware hubs.
3. Added support for ATA-100 hard disk drives. This enhancement will have no affect unless the operating system also supports ATA-100.
4. Added support for the ActionTech J-Class Mini-PCI card.
5. Added support for UXGA LCD panels.
6. The video BIOS has been upgraded from version 4.059 to 4.061

Interesting to note that it seems like Dell will be shipping massive 15.4 displays on their I8K units. Just when you thought 15 inch was as large as they can get...

The ATA/100 support itself should make it worth upgrading the BIOS alone in the long run. Although there aren't any ATA/100 notebook drives widely available yet, they will soon out there. The ATI M4 Video BIOS update should improve video card performance slightly or fix some compatiblity issues.

There are also updates for the I3.8K and I4K units. For those that have the I3.8K, get the BIOS update as it seems to fix tons of issues with WinME/2K. The I4K fixes a simple floppy drive access problem which really isn't a biggie IMO.
