Interesting, but I personally can't think of anything I could use it for.
However, I live in the suburbs and not downtown.

I can just picture fat lazy people using these in the mall and Wal-mart.

I remember when this was patented someone posted a
link to the original drawings from the patent
people were laughing about it.

Can anyone remember where it was?

It was claimed by the inventor that this
would be the transportation mode of the future.

I can't believe he actually built it, although I think in the patent
it claimed it would be able to climb stairs guess that didn't pan out.
Look at number three

World's first dynamically stabilized, self-balancing Human Transporter
Forward and backward maneuvering is guided by rider's natural motions
Easily navigates most walkable areas, including paved surfaces, dirt roads, grass, and inclines
Emissions free, powered by rechargeable NiMH battery packs
Fun to ride--a unique experience

but what they keep saying is that its better than walking..what they don't realize is that standing up is much more tiring and physically demanding than walking bcause when u walk the muscle groups used changes very quickly, when u stand u put all the strain on one muscle group for an extended period of time, and it gets exhausted very fast

That was how much it was expected to cost. I'm sure the 5k is the hyped up price.

Disney brought one over to the company that i work for (Pioneer) as a demonstration, i guess they are big contributors or something, as i understand they are buying a bunch for the parks or something... i would assume not for public use, i got to ride on it, it was cool, you CAN NOT tip it over.

and its pretty fast, by the way you stand on it and the way it turns, i wouldnt want it to be any faster.

not worth my 5k, but for us we have HUGE warehouses so it would be good transport around them, we were also looking at the electric gopeds, at $500 a piece, i'll let you figure out which ones we went with

I watched a meter-reader going about his route on one in Seattle a few weeks ago. It seemed pretty cool, until I saw him try to park it on a hill. He spent a lot of time trying to find a spot where it would stay put. I can see how they'd be great for jobs where you are always getting on and off it, like in a warehouse or the meter-reader. For those of us with desk jobs, however, walking around can be a treat. I'll stick with my bike, thanks.

The post office tried these out in my hometown - the mailboxes are on most peoples front porch there in neighborhoods built before the 80's.

They had to stop using them because they were leaving tracks through peoples front yards.
