Not "back east" in general, but Pennsylvania in particular.

You wanna' hear crazy? If I remember corectly, in Pennsylvania not only can you NOT buy beer at a grocery store, but you can't buy it at a CONVENIENCE store either. You have to go to a specific "beer store" (I don't know what they're called) that just sells beer (and wine? Heck, I'm not even sure if they can sell wine there)

Also, you can't buy anything less than a 12-pack. That's right. NO singles or 6-packs. HUH?!?!??!?!?!

And if you want hard liquor you've got to go to a specialty store as well. This isn't nearly as crazy as the beer thing, but I mention it because in California you can buy liquor at Ralphs (a grocery store)

PA has the stupidist alcohol purchase laws that I've ever seen. (no offense to any PA citizens here who might have lobbied for those laws. I just find them ludicrous)

yep. usually called 'beverage' stores or distributors, they can't sell wine. however, usually you can pick up small quantities of beer to go at your local pizza joint or restaurant. usually 6-packs.

see above

yup all liquor/wine stores in Pennsylvania are owned/operated by the state. usually dubbed "Wine & Spirits Shoppe", at least those in the NEPA area are.

Life is too short to drink crappy beer.

I just got back from Disney. Also discovered Karl Straus IPA while I was down there at Cal Adventures. Not as stout as Redhook IPA, but very smooth, and a nice amber-red tint. Thank goodness KS had a bar located in LAX while I was waiting for the plane back home...

Does anyone here think that UCLA will lose on purpose so the SC won't have a chance to go to the Rosebowl?

Here's an observation that I have. I live in Ohio and it amazes me that Southern California seems like a totally different world to me. Not only do you talk different (Yeah like Knarly Dude!), you drive different cars (I'm only getting 86MPG there must be something wrong with this soy fuel burning car), and you have totaly different stores (and I'm not talking about the new age 'natural' food stores). Other then on this board I've never heard of a Fry's. In my town of Columbus we've got BB, CC, Target, and Walmart. I do most of my shopping online. Well I'll have the last laugh when the whole state slides off into the ocean!!! HHAHAHAHAH!!! Sorry.

Okay, since it was mentioned...

I totally agree. PA Alcohol laws are a pain in the butt and are stupid (prohibition era rules that are supported by an entrenched system that lobbies against any change).

Forget about convenience. Beer has to be bought at "beer distributors" and wine and other alcohol has to be purchased at PA State Stores. Of course, State Stores have a monopoly and are expensive, not open on Sunday, and have poor selection. (Supposedly State Stores help control alcohol, but the state store near my college almost NEVER carded, even though lots of underage college kids would buy - I guess the store manager had a quota to meet!)

Luckily for me, I am within a one hour drive of both NJ and Delaware, which are both "free wheelin" alcohol states. Delaware even drops the sales tax. I spend $100-$300 on each of my alcohol road trips.

Regards!
