Now that Chris and his girlfriend, Rose, have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

Decent movie but not exactly a great movie IMO.

Starts off a bit slow, but it's fine as the dialogue at the beginning is very well written and the actors are believable and do justice to their roles. Plus the comic relief is actually funny. The character development is there so you appreciate it even though not that much happens initially.

My issue with the movie though is that the low budget feel really comes through when the horror port comes into it. It isn't really scary so much as creepy and suspenseful, but these scenes are few and together feel like an episode of The Twilight Zone from the 1980s, with a budget to match. There isn't much gore, even for scenes where I felt there should be. Some of that happens off screen, which some people may appreciate, but it made me wonder if they just didn't have the money to pay for all the makeup and special effects.

Yes racial commentary is infused throughout the movie, and mostly it is handled OK without getting too preachy. This is what makes this movie more enjoyable than it otherwise might have been though, because as a horror movie it leaves a bit to be desired. If it weren't for the dialogue and light touches of comedy, it'd score lower in my books. Plus, the acting gets worse in the horror scenes. I think it is partially intentional and if you see the movie you'll probably understand why, but it stands out a bit too much. I don't think horror means acting should be wooden or that the dialogue becomes one dimensional. Unfortunately, that's what happens to a certain extent in this movie. Like I said, similar to an episode of The Twilight Zone of the 1980s.

As of right now at Rotten Tomatoes it is still 100%, at 134/0, and yes I'd give it a positive review too, but my assessment is it's just a 3/5 which is why I'm surprised it's getting such rave reviews. It's not bad, but I for one won't be buying this one on Blu-ray.

There are a few jump scares, but it's not awash in them.

I thought it was good movie. The acting was exceptional I thought. Kinda old school type movie. I thought it was more creepy than scary though. What really stands out is the fact the guy only spent 4.5 million making it.

This is exactly the ending I was expecting actually, and it would have made for a better ending IMO.

However, even with that ending, I would still have given it a 3/5 or 3.5/5, because the horror side was lacking and the acting got a lot more wooden in the last third of the movie.

It seems the critics are still totally in love with it though. After 164 reviews, so far there is only one (only one!) negative review.
