Leaking out is not the problem. China will gladly leak out any information that makes them look good in the eyes of the world.

Blocking information from getting IN is the problem. If China wants to become the next "westernized" nation - then they will have to change how they allow information to pass through their "firewall". China loves to filter [delay] television and [block] internet sites.

Meh, they still have a ways to go when it comes to good research and quality output. The Chinese universities place great emphasis on the paper output. Professors need to churn out so many papers a year. A PhD student needs to publish X number of papers in journals with Y impact factor (whatever that is) to get their degree. Despite this, it was only the past year that the first time a Chinese received the Nobel Prize. But he is Hong Kong and United Kingdom educated and worked in HK and UK univesities and thus not a product of the current Chinese university system.

EDIT: No wait, looking through the list, China did get a prize in 1957 but both of those recipients left for the United States and became citizens during WWII.

Everyone talks about the emerging economy and impact of China's educated workforce. I'm much more worried about the bloodbath that will occur if there is a civil revolt.

For the last 20 years, the dissidents that weren't jailed were relocated to rural towns. Every successful revolution since the dawn of man has come from the grass roots of the country at risk. Educated people don't forget their education because they're now farmers.

You don't have to worry about it. There are more Chinese who can speak English than Americans who speak English.

While we're busy laying off science teachers & eliminating science labs (thread in P&N) so we can keep our best students from getting too far ahead of the idiots who place no value on education & don't care if they succeed; while we're busy building museums that celebrate creationism & man walking alongside dinosaurs; while we're busy patting ourselves for being #1 & slowing down our rate of advancement, China is investing tons in education & is catching up to us faster than the rabbit passing the hare.

Quality still matters. There is little doubt that universities like Bejing, Tsinghua and Chiao-Tung churn out some of the best and brightest undergraduate students in the world, but China's graduate school system still needs a lot of work. The majority of faculty members at Tsinghua did their BS, MS and PhD in the very same department they are now directing research and teaching at, with very little exposure to work done in other parts of the world. A lot of them have never even left the country to do a postdoc overseas in the US or in the EU.

There is very little diversity in their work, although that is bound to change pretty soon as they attract more scholars and students. If you want to get into China's academic world, the best way right now is probably through Taiwan.
