I'm grateful that I have a job that doesn't care if I work from home. I'm getting sick of the snow, but the fact that the management actually encourages people to WFH and not come in doesn't really give me a whole lot to complain about.

Technically I think I'm in the 6-12 zone but pretty close to 3-6 as well, could go either way probably. We've had rumblings of being closed tomorrow.

Here in NoVA schools already announcing their closings for tomorrow and some for Friday as well.

Mondays President day has been canceled for some schools to try and make up lost snow days.

There were still a couple of thousand peeps without power from last week's icepocalypse as of yesterday, and I know a couple of them! I was damn lucky, in that my power was only out for most of the first day, while all around me was still dark.

The 3 inches of ice was on top of 7 inches from a couple of days before, and now this. And it's been too cold for much of any melt. I've got HUGE berms going up my driveway, making shoveling out increasingly difficult.

At least my boss (me) lets me work from home. Of course, I've got to have power to do so. Winter, yay!

What always amuses me is the panic buying. I was at the service desk at Home Depot the other day when the lady on the phone had to say, "Sorry, we're all out of generators, snow blowers, ice melt salt, shovels, etc." We both had a good laugh at that.

not even going to bother going into work tomorrow. I had no choice a few storms ago to go to work and was stuck on 295 for 2.5 hours on what usually is a half hour commute

a guy I know from PA had power issues and his wife was complaining about the food spoiling. I overheard the conversation my wife was having with her on the phone and shouted out Put the food in the garage since its so damn cold" and my wife started laughing. She put the phone down and we both started listening to the wife yelling at her husband about why he didnt think about that

NOAA sent out a press image yesterday warning Atlanta could get a historic, "crippling" ice storm this week. After seeing the chaos that little bit of snow caused back in January, I believe it. They could see up to an inch of ice in some spots. That's enough to bring places like Toronto and Montreal to their knees, let alone a city that's not anywhere near adequately equipped to handle that.

It's the ice that really fucked us up in PA last week. It brought down numerous trees which snapped power lines.

Tell me about it. My neighborhood had something like 60 trees down. Looked like a graveyard for trees.

Fortunately I bother driving in tomorrow most likely. 8-12 inches of snow means I'll build a fire and work from home.

parents house had a 50 ft tree down in the backyard that took out part of the shed. quoted $1500 to remove the thing right, but they told us to wait till the spring and prices will drop back down to earth. luckily it's not a hazard to anything. a small 10 ft pine tree also fell down at my house, but we were going to cut it down anyways, so that worked out well

Thats the thing for many parts of the south. The temps will climb enough to melt some of the snow/ice but hard freeze over night again.

Should be interesting for those of us with dash cams or cell phones watching the roads. :sneaky:

This. Was without power until Saturday at noon. I was gutting it out and staying at home - family had moved out the day after we lost power. Luckily, I had a gas fireplace that gave just enough warmth to make it bearable in the 40° temps inside.

Between the generator and my plow on the ATV, I welcome this storm. Nothing I haven't dealt with already in the past 2 weeks.

12-18 inches isn't too much, at least on flat plains land. But, I imagine that might be a bit scary to drive around on the mountains.... Good luck everyone!

And my WRX is in the body shop(deer) otherwise I would be all over this.

Took my RX-8 out for shits and giggles the last snow since I park indoors nowadays.

I had fun as hell trying to keep the car straight, and I got in some fancy sideways action. I lasted about 10 minutes before I decided I am going to hit something and took it back indoors.

Not doing that again. ABS made it impossible to stop the car and I just barely missed smashing into a curb. I did a few 180s just by turning off traction control and trying to make sense out of it.

It was fun practice though. People should drive their cars in crappy weather without traction control to get a better sense of their driving skills.

This. Absolutely. The only truly thorough way to learn to go against primitive instinct and steer into skids is to find an ice-filled parking lot and do it; not to mention simply learning the tendencies and limits of your particular vehicle in such conditions.

You've got to develop a relationship with your vehicle, through experience. There's no real way around that. In the more pervasive youth car culture of "yore". Just about every single male I knew got their learner's permit and then their license as soon as they legally could. So the guys of my cohort all knew their vehicles, and how to drive them, like the guys on this forum know their 'puters.

Also, in addition to being educational/useful ... it sure as heck is fun too!
