Get Rid of My Thermaltake Venus 12 or What?

Hey Guys...

I have my 3500+ being cooled with a Thermaltake Venus 12 HSF. My idle temps are 38c at full fan speed (5500RPMs), and load would be around 55C.

Now, this HSF is rated for AMD64 up to 3400+? So my question is, should I upgrade to a better solution (i.e. - Thermalright XP-120/XP-90 with appropriate Fan), and a by-product of that question would be what type of advantage would I see (temp drops?).

More than likely, you'd see a 5-8 drop if you use a good fan.

The TT Venus 12 is an excellent fan, check to make sure that it's seated right.

Tt doesnt make great parts. The Venus12 is a loud HSF even with the fan controller. I would recommend you getting a zalman 7000alcu. Its quieter and its cools better than the venus12. Or an XP-90 with a Panaflo.

I agree with BW86 and go with a Zalman. Quality HS/F's, just make sure it fits your mobo

Wow, that temp is horrible considering the amount of air your forcing threw it.

I've said this about a million times, Thermaltake is junk. Check out Alpha, Thermalright and Zalman.

as i said before, the fan is decent. It can keep things very cool at those speeds. Make sure you have it seated right, that is the only way you could get temps like that (well, unless your mobo is showing them incorrectly) at full speed.

I use the Venus 12 and my temps are way lower than that. like drpootums said, make sure everything is seated right. I dont' have any problems with it at all.

Depends on your definition of "decent". If "decent" means that the hsf is able to cool the CPU without it overheating, yes, then it's "decent". But my definition of "decent" goes more towards to how a product compares to other available products and using that definiton it's not "decent". Thermaltake has not a single hsf in their product range that competes with the top products, no matter the price range.

Those temperatures are fine. If you don't mind the noise, there's no need to get a new hsf. If you want something quieter, the Zalman 7000 AlCu ($30) is the best choice currently. It won't cool much better, but it will be much quieter. If you wanna spend a little more, look at the Thermalright XP-90 or the XP-120, these are currently the best heatsinks around.

well, if it's seated right at full speed it should be in the 30's celcius. @3500 rpm it should be around 30-40 idle/load. It's a GOOD hs/f, i just dont get it why everyone hates TT.

Remember guys - the TTake Venus 12 is rated up to 3400+ speeds only. From what I can tell in this thread, the ones that have it are under it's umbrella (3200+, 3400+, etc.).

Since I have a 3500+, and it falls out of it's "comfort" box, that is why I raised the question to begin with.

The manufacturers rantings don't mean much anyway, they are usually true to about +/- 300+ in performance rating.

The performance of any product is only as good as the application, or as good as the engineer doing the implementation.

I'd venture to say that your bad/high temps are a result of a dodgy install with mis-applied thermal compund causing a bad seat on the CPU, or just crap compound.

I've got a Venus 12 applied using Ceramique. I have the fan on a controller and I never need to really get the fan RPMs above 2000. It never gets above 35 C under load, even with a slight overclock on an AMD64 3200+. There is virtually no noise from the fan until you turn the RPMs up to about 3500. If I turn the fan up to max (5000 rpm) the temp will go down to about 25 C. The thermal sensor is applied on the under side of the heatsink 2mm from the edge of the CPU.

Blatantly, for me the things kicks ass!

I'm building an SLI beast now using an FX-55. I've been looking at Zalman and Thermalright just to do something different. I don't feel like water cooling. After some looking and a lot of reading I'll probably just get another Venus 12. I've seen comparison reviews with TT Venus 12 and the Zalmans where the reviews were really thorough showing temp measurements for the tests. The TT beat the Zalmans!

I personally weed out the reviews that don't give hard facts like temp measurements in the comparisons. All the rest are just bias opinions.

I'm not TT biased, but just wanted to point out that the problem might not be the product, but the application.

I bought a Zalman 7000a and am getting high temps (48 C idle 55-58 C load) which makes me wish i woulda got the TT. Dang...the only thing bothering me was the weight of the TT.

I've got a TT Venus 12 on AMD 64 FX-55. I have to run at 5000 RMP to keep the CPU below 40 'C. It is louder than hell. I'm kind of scratching my head re-thinking. I have gone back and re-applied thermal compound and it didn't make any difference.

Suggestions?

 

Get a Zalman 7700Cu if you can fit it into your case.
