The funny part is that i just buy whatever has a great deal, I don't have a preference; if an AMD deal aligned with a purchase I would have zero qualms buying one - my friends actually have many AMD cards because their system builds better align with AMD's deals

I am impressed by all you guys remembering what pre 3D-cards you had.
I had a C64, a commodore 286, a IMB PS2 (386) and a pentium 90 system beforeI got my first 3D accelerator, and I even remembering updating a 2D card to get better screen resolution, but I don't remember what brand or anything else of the video card.

What I remember now though is that I had a PowerVR and Redention 2200 at some time though. Both very bad choices, but funny seeing PowerVR doing so well now in tablets and phones.

I remember that the GeForce 2 MX was really bad, but I see that many of you have the same card. Was it really that bad or is it my memory? (I think I got it for an old screen and thus ran it at low resolution first, then upgraded to a larger screen. That might be the cause of its poor performance.)

Really bad compared to what?

It was around the Geforce SDR speed.

So, yeah... my brand loyalty to video cards is practically non existent. The only card that I ever had that was BAD was that ATI AllInWonder 9700 Pro. Every time it needed a driver update, all of the entertainment apps needed to be reinstalled, sometimes several times

I find the premise of this thread, "...know our favorite VC&G Viral Marketers through their hardware purchasing history." to be ludicrous at best.

I bought a couple of Number Nine video cards way back when, so does that make me a Number Nine viral marketer?


I've had more than a few high end ATi/AMD and Nvidia cards over the last few years, so that makes me a dual viral marketer? Currently have a GTX 780 and an AMD 6950 in a pair of desktops. Have had a 7970 Lightening, Titan, 7950's, and on and on.

I think you'll find waaaay more fanbois than viral marketers, blinded by unwavering loyalty to a company that wants nothing more than to empty their wallets. Loyalty to a graphics card company makes no sense to me, but what do I know.....

I do know LavaHeadache's collection is damned impressive, and I only saw a small portion of what he owns. Mind boggling.

If you were gaming in those days, it was a big deal. FPS was mostly dependent on raw throughput. While most other cards were concerned about Windows (3.1) acceleration or whatever, Tseng was specialized in throughput. RAM throughput, but more importantly maximizing bus throughput. ET4000 and later ET6000 offered mediocre windows acceleration and had no integrated RAMDAC, which eventually led to them being uncompetitive in feature set, but these were the enthusiast cards of their day... The cards Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem 3D players would talk about on the BBS when they dialed in over their modem.

So yes, I remember them.

In those days things were particularly interesting because there were only a few cards that had anywhere near decent gaming performance. The ET4000 was king because it was cheapest of the options, often found for just a few bucks more than some of the cheapest chips. ATi had decent throughput, maybe even marginally better, but I remember them being roughly 3x the price of ET4000 cards. ET6000 cards commanded some premium when they came out, but I don't recall it being extraordinary. Then there was the whole 3Dfx pass through thing. The Voodoo 1 was really not fast enough to outperform the ET6000 at the minimum Quake resolution it initially ran at (640x480), but the game sure did look a hell of a lot better with the Voodoo.
