Does anyone remember how long it took for the 9700 Pro to come down to $299 from $399? I'm trying to see when the 9800 will come down causing another price drop on the 9700 line.

Compusa is still selling the 9700 Pro for $399. I bet someone is gonna buy it at that price between now and when they put the 9800 on the shelves, lol.

How long do you guys suggest I wait before buying this card? I am semi-fine with paying $399 for the ATI 9800 Pro. But was wondering if they will drop in price fast or if someone will just lower the price. Where should I buy it and do you recommend a certain manufacturer or should I stick with the "made by ATI" ATI 9800 Pro?

What I have right now is defiantely struggling (Geforce 2 lol). I'm in the process of buying a new computer, so wanted to get the best in terms of a Video Card. Been waiting for a while, so waiting for the NVxx is basically out of the question, a better video card will always be a few months away The new rig looks like this:

CPU: AMD 2800+ Barton
Motherboard: nForce 2 Epox 8RDA+
Video Card: ATI 9800 Pro
Memory: Samsung PC2700 (DDR 333) CAS2 512MB x2
Hard Drive: Maxtor 120GB ATA/133 8mb Cache (DiamondMax Plus 9 6Y120P0)
Case: Antec Performance Plus AMG 1080

Feel free to make any suggestions.

That's OEM... OEM 9800 Pro will probably be similar as well.

Might as well get it now... i highly doubt it's going to go any lower anytime soon. Maybe when the 256mb version comes out, and even then, i doubt it'll drop much.

I bet it stays at $399 for at least 1 month, then you will probably see it drop $15-$20.

I guess I should be more explicit.

My OEM runs ... and oc's just as well as the Retail.

I'd rather save some trees,,,, who really needs a box?
(that you throw away later anyway)

Isn't warranty longer on the retail as well?

Yes.

OEM = 30 day warranty
Retail = 3 year warranty

I void the warranty the day I get any part so I buy OEM. But if you like warranty, retail is teh way to go

um... with ati cards oems are actually slower than retail.... built by ati retail is usually the fastest card and oem's and other manufacturers vary in clock speeds.

wrong, this hasn't been the case since the 8500's, and those were branded LE and LELE.

There have been plenty of OEM 9700pro horror stories when it comes to clockspeeds. Between the TX, Gold, and downlocked OEM Pros, there's still plenty of guesswork left for the end-user who buys OEM non-BBA ATi cards.

Sorry if I'm a little behind on this, but I was fairly certain the TX's from Dell are clearly branded as TX. Also, can you link to an OEM that's downclocked? (Pro)

EDIT:sp

you mean there are plenty of horor stories of retailers branding 9700s as "pro" models, when they are not pros at all. this happens with all sorts of products when you buy from shady retailers.

Umm no, I'm talking about AIB-makers selling a card as an OEM 9700pro with standard 325 core clocks and much slower RAM, like 275MHz. Search function is currently down, but when it goes up, try running a search on 9700pro + Sapphire + OEM. If you put your ATi pennant and bag of popcorn down for a few seconds, you wouldn't be so ignorant to the truth.

take it easy there big guy, where'd that come from?

This is just the first I've ever heard of a manufacturer selling bum 9700pro's, and you brought up the TX and gold versions which are clearly marked as such.

I'd think a price drop on the 9800 would primarily depend upon what nVidia does. ATI certainly wont keep their 9800 Pro @ $399 should nVidia start to get a little more agressive.
