I find it interesting that many people through this thread have stated that the 3000+ card will not bottleneck the 6800 GT, yet not one of those people have cited personal experience with specs close to the 3000+ as stated by the originator of this thread.

On the other hand, I have a very similar rig and I say my CPU is holding back my 6800 GT. Holding back to the point where I am turning down some settings on games like Doom 3 to increase my performance.

If anyone with personal experience with a similar rig using a 6800 GT would like to put their experiences to word within this thread I invite you to do so.

I am looking forward to seeing the performance leap I will get when I upgrade my CPU and motherboard sometime in the as yet undetermined future.

Joker, we are just saying that you are probably gpu limited. Like when you run the Doom 3 bench, do you take the 3rd run result? Or at least 2nd?

How are you comparing frames exactlY? Do you use Fraps to run a timed bench, do you use built-in bench? Obviously you wont get the same numbers if the testing procedures are not the same.

Also, looking at digit-life benches of doom 3 anything faster than 2800+ makes no difference at 1600x1200 resolution and AA/AF enabled. All other links I've provided show same thing. Why would all these websites fake their benches?

jeesh. how many different ways do you need the numbers presented to you?

That is uncalled for rise4310. Differences of opinion are fine. When two people are showing different numbers for like or same systems we should be attempting to determine why that is, as RussianSensation has done. What I have been saying all along is I am probably limited by both gpu and cpu. And the facts support my statements.

I will do more research and see if I can present any data beyone my simple observations of framerates. Back later with my findings.

i wasn't trying to be rude. it just seems that you have this notion stuck in your head and no matter what evidence is provided to the contrary you maintain your position.

you claimed in your first post that you can comment intelligently on the matter yet you dismiss reviews and benches out of hand by saying that they have "much faster" systems then yours. so i point you to the link coomar gave, provide you a link to the particular page that shows the same results using 16x12, 4x/16x with three different cpu speeds yet you claim they are all faster than yours. despite the fact one of the testbeds used was an a64 at 1800.

on top of that, members with same or less capable cpus compared to your 3200 are saying they are not cpu limited either, myself included.

perhaps its just a doom 3 thing, i don't have it so i don't know. i do know my 6800gt and 3200+ crush any and all games i play.

What a bunch of flamers this thread is filled with.

For a A64 3000+, the card i personally would go with is a X800XL or a 6800GT.

Depending on the game & what setting you are running at, it's possible that your 6800 GT may be slightly bottlenecked by your CPU.
That is a good thing though!.
For the best price/performance, one should always get a lower CPU + higher video card. That combination will always be better than vice versa.

Agreed.

I questioned rise for a moment and a very good response was given. No flaming here at all. I consider this to be a discussion that will hopefully allow me to answer some of my questions and perhaps help others answer theirs as well.

RussianSensation I looked back through one of your previous posts and followed the links you posted. I hadn't looked through them all nor looked closely enough. The one link clearly shows three different CPU's all getting identical framerates with a 6800 GT. That is a pretty strong indication in support of your argument. Sorry I missed that portion earlier.

So I'm going to spend some time working to figure out why I am getting results from my card that I am not happy with.

More later,

The game looks amazing and I am able to walk around just fine and have very few issues while fighting. Yet, if things get a bit intense I can see the framerate drop into the teens and I have an issue or two. Not nearly so bad that I am willing to turn down the quality settings yet it is noticeable.

So, yes you will experience bottlenecking with your current 3000+. Did you get socket 939 with that? If so you could wait a year and with just a couple hundred dollars de-bottleneck the CPU with an upgrade.

Hope this helps.

Edited for clarification.

I feel compelled to tell all that Ultra setting in doom 3 is completely playable with a 256 meg card with NO studdering. In my experience I had 512 megs of system ram= studdering. I put another 512= less studering. I take out one 512 and put in a gig stick= no studdering, ever.
