After I install it is there anything I need to download, enable, ect? Or do I just pop it in and enjoy the fast multitasking? I wasn't even gonna upgrade now and was gonna wait to build a C2D system but I couldn't turn it down for $99 shipped(used) .

Thx

Go to the AMD website and download the dual core optimizer, and the drivers for the chip and then you will be set.

AMD Utilities

You will need to reinstall, or at least repair windows for it to enable dual processor support.

I did not know about the AMD utilities though. Will give that a try tonight.

Thats the beauty of a repair though. You only lose service packs and updates, and possibly your AV. All your other software/files should be intact.

Does your task manager show two cpu charts, or one?

I booted mine after upgrading to an X2 to make sure, and I only had 1 cpu chart until I repaired.

No, you don't. I dropped mine in 2 weeks ago. I used the AMD utility to "optimize" performance. Didn't notice any difference though. XP noticed right away that I had 2 cores.

Go to the BIOS and load Optimized Defaults. F10 and save. AFter the restart, uninstall your CPU drivers (remove the CPU from your Hardware manager). Then shut down. Then swap chips. Then it should find it again when you boot up. Install the dual core drivers, and use the optimizer, and then reboot. That worked for me.

Cool, didn't think you could do it that way.

Is the 3rd download down the drivers you speak of?

No, the second to last download from the bottom of the page. Version 1.3.2.16

They will only effect your PC's perfromance. The optimizer helps use both cores. They have nothing to do with OCing...I have a 4400+ OC @2.6GHz......

I dropped an Opty 165 in and didn't to anything else. Both cores recognized in Windows np, although I did have to flash the bios on my DFI board. Some programs, most notably games, don't run correctly on dual core machines without the optimizer, it won't affect OC.

k thx all. Curious though when playing a game does it use both cores or just one? Could I rip and burn 2 dvd's at the same time with no slowdown or errors? Would the DVD ripping app use a core each? Thx

The whole point of dual core is for multi-tasking, so burning/ripping a couple DVD's should be fine. As for gaming, I think only newer games (or maybe none, yet) make use of both cores.

You do NOT have to reinstall Windows.

You have to change the system HAL to the Multi-Processor HAL from the Uni-Processor HAL.

You can read how to do this on TechNet. Go to TechNet and search for it.

Some of the advice on this forum is pretty bad sometimes.

It shows two.
