Getting a present got my Mom for Mothers day, need suggestions on sound cards

Thanks guys, but I have no reason to get a new card if I don't know if I can disable her onboard sound, can anyone help me with that, or at least tell me if it's possible

Do you still have the manual for the PC? If not, IBM usually has a good database of their old products, which include diagrams of the motherboards in older systems. You can either disable it by jumper, thru the BIOS, or it may be a seperate card (their MWAVE cards which is an ISA modem/soundcard combo can be removed and replaced).

I love this, CoolRed is asking for a nice simple card that only needs to be able to play multiple sounds and some people are suggesting cards that cost over 100 dollars! Every new card out today can do this feature.

You can get a Hercules Muse XL for 15 bucks or a Fortissimo II for 31. I'd get the Muse if I were in your boat. It plays multiple sounds, if that is all your looking for, then there is no need for spending more money for stuff you will never need.

You may be able to disable the onboard sound in the bios. If worse comes to worse, I believe you could just disable it in windows. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe you could just disable it in the device manager before you install the new card.

Only do that if you can't figure out how to disable it by another way.

If you can't disable the sound via the bios or motherboard you could install your new sound card and disable the old onboard sound in windows.

Its important to try disabling it from hardware first just to eliminate hidden conflicts with resources. It would be more helpful if we know the configuration of your Aptiva. I have a strong feeling it uses the Mwave card ( do you attach your speakers and telephone wire to the modem right next to each other?). If it is, its just a matter of removing it.

I guess SB live would be the choice, the price is still dropping though

Well pretty much any card you can buy now will do the things you are wanting it to do. If she is like my mom she would not know the difference between a $20 cheap ass card and a $200 SB Audigy PLatinum card. I do like the TB Santa Cruz though.
