The donkey Kong game reminds me of donkey Kong 64 for some reason. It looks interesting. Smash brothers will be interesting too.

Is that enough of a list for pepole to see the wii-u as a viable platform to purchase though, i think only prior nintendo fans have visibility to those games. Others will just say "ANOTHER MARIO KART!??!", etc.

It depends I don't think it will be a strong enough purchase on it's own. I think those that are big nintendo fans or have kids that enjoy other games will get one anyway.

Personally I would only pick one up if the price was right because I'm only interested in 2-3 games.

Sorry about the derail there...

On topic on the Wii U... it should have an interesting year in 2014.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Mario Kart 8
Bayonetta 2
Super Smash Bros.
X

That's a nice looking lineup for 1 year on a Nintendo console. I know a lot of people are excited about some of these, but for me it's Super Smash Bros. and X. Smash Bros is always fun to play with friends, and with X, Monolith Soft is coming off of Xenoblade, which was really good... so they could potentially still be on their game, and put out another strong RPG.

I'll probably pick up MK8 and SSB, but I've never been a huge fan of either series so 2014 isn't looking that great for me personally.

My wish list for Wii U is a FPS or Gears of War style over the shoulder shooter with multiplayer using the TV and the gamepad. Co-op FPS on Wii U with each player having their own screen would be awesome, even if the graphics are scaled down to render on both screens. Local competetive multiplayer FPS on Wii U could also trump its Xbox and PS counterparts if two players could have their own screen.

Wii U could also benefit from sports games with players having their own screens (football being the most obvious, but any sports game could benefit from having separate screens).

The Wii U is unusually weak in the first person shooters, and sports games areas. I think Nintendo is a slow company to adapt to new trends, and hasn't figured out that people like FPS games yet.

Gamer: "Hey Nintendo, why doesn't the Wii U have a LAN port?"
Nintendo: "Why would it need one?"
Gamer: "To connect to the internet with"
Nintendo: "What the hell is the internet?!"

FPS games sell well in Japan.... but, you know... Nintendo is just doing it's thing. They'll figure it out eventually.

Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze for the Wii U looks amazing, but I hate that they made you do things like wiggle the controller to roll in the last DK game. Inputs and controls like that feel far too much like a gimmick to me, and ruins an otherwise really neat platformer...

This time around, thank goodness, it sounds like the traditional controls are there (though you can still shake if you want to): http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/06/first_impressions_donkey_kong_country_tropical_freeze

Does anyone know if New Super Mario Bros U requires you to shake the Wii U gamepad around at all, or is that optional?

This is more a fault of third parties not adopting the console, for a variety of reasons. The architecture is so different than the new next-gen systems from Microsoft and Sony (Nintendo is on PowerPC), and it's also less powerful, and less popular (sales are crucially important to these guys),... so I doubt we'll see that change anytime soon.

No joke--I imagine Nintendo would be a terrible place to work. I suspect its full of close-minded lead designers that think they know best and refuse to listen to outside ideas. You'd think they'd develop a decent online gaming infrastructure to attract third party developers who focus on online multiplayer games, but Nintendo refuses to even accommodate the needs of third parties who think outside Nintendo's box. All the features in the Wii U seem to be stuff that needed to be in there for Nintendo's first party titles, and they excised anything that would've been of value to third party developers (online infrastructure, ethernet, HDD storage, a comprehensible digital storefront, bundled pro controller, etc.)

I guess the most I could hope for is an innovative Zelda title. It would be neat if the Wii U Zelda title supported drop-in/drop-out co-op play using the gamepad as the second player's screen. Link/Zelda as switchable characters in solo or as co-op characters in two players would be neat (it is called Legend of ZELDA so you'd think she'd be a playable character someday--plus, doesn't it seem appropriate for Wife co-op?).

They could probably do separate screen co-op for a Super Mario Galaxy type game too, which would open up the possibility for more exploration/puzzle style gameplay that couldn't be done in 3D World because of the shared screen restriction.

I think the spin move that is mapped to the shake motion when playing on a Wii Remote is mapped to ZR on the gamepad, so no shaking required on the gamepad.

The shake stuff is more from the limitations of the original Wii mote in terms of how many buttons it has. Every single Wii U game works with the tablet controller and also the pro controller. No shaking is in New Super Mario Bros. U unless you use a Wii mote.

Heheh that's true, but :

"ANOTHER FORZA!?!?!?"

"ANOTHER COD!?!?!?!"

"ANOTHER MADDEN!?!?!?!"

If sales prove anything, it's that people love to buy the same thing over and over and over again.

If the WiiU launched with Super Mario 3D World and a half dozen of their main staples to go with it (Zelda/Smash/Metroid/yadda yadda) then the WiiU would have had a much better start. As it is, I think it makes a compelling second system to someone that already has an XB1 or PS4, as most of those titles will be on both the main platforms, but not the WiiU, and vice versa. The price should also be more competitive by fall of this year as well.

The more involved gamers almost always have at least two systems anyway, so I could see them having a pretty good year in 2014. They will certainly be a 3rd place runner, but they are generally smart enough about their business to make good profits because their management is fairly solid, as opposed to companies like Capcom lol.

As I posted earlier, they are getting ready to announce another major 3P exclusive title. Been very tight lipped so far, but it has leaked that it is coming. And Zelda eventually as well on the 1P side.

Also, its not going to be exclusive, but I am interested in Project C.A.R.S.

My son is asking about Monster Hunter 4 or 5?? I am oblivious.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is what's on the Wii U in the US, with a 3DS version of the same game...

Your son's probably curious on when Monster Hunter 4 will be brought to western regions, which is anyone's guess... Capcom's broke right now, and unwilling to take that many risks.

So why bad-mouth the game on a forum? You clearly don't know what you're talking about, having admitted to only playing the intro sequence!

Because that's my opinion on the game? If you don't like it, then I really don't care. I barely play games anymore, and I'll be damned if I'm going to waste my time on a game that I find a chore to play.

Now, excuse me while I go grind out five levels in this worthless, terrible Bravely Default demo!

And you're STILL trying to talk about Monster Hunter. Have you played Monster Hunter? No? Then shuuut uuuup!

I played the demo, and that was more than enough for me. So, unless you're going to tell me that the combat controls magically get better in the full game, you really ought to take your own advice there, bub.

Having just played an intro sequence of Dragon's Dogma, you probably should have kept your uniformed opinion to yourself. Your opinion of the game is WORTHLESS.

And now you're badmouthing Monster Hunter based on a demo.

Do you not understand, that giving an opinion based off of zero actual time trying something, adds nothing to the conversation?

It's like, if I watched a movie trailer, and then came into a forum where people were discussing the movie, and said "this movie is boring" and then when the people who watched the whole movie say "No it's not. Did you even watch it?", I tried to defend my position "I watched the trailer, and I think it should have been more exciting, so the movie is boring."

That's basically how you're coming across. That's how you sound. You should be embarrassed.

And that's the biggest thing going for it....

More stagnant realistic modern military shooters is NOT what anybody wants right now... Except the causal COD retards who only play COD and were never gamers in the first place.

Nintendo knows what they are doing. They are catering to the original gamer demographic that were playing video games before video games became cool and mainstream. And that is just fine with me.

NES and SNES did just fine when video games were a fringe niche and kids toy. People need to stop comparing everything to COD numbers and freaking out. F*ck COD.

I can understand the viewpoint that people who only play one kind of game can be irritating. A particular friend of mine primarily only plays one of the competitive shooters, and when I hear this person say "I'm a gamer", it makes me feel a little ill. Shooters are still pretty popular right now though, so its strange a major console is ignoring them.

It's really interesting that the Wii U has defined itself as a console that's not for shooters. So ingrained is this perception, that the Wii U isn't for shooters, that the PS4 outsold the Wii U on COD Ghosts, before it was even released! The Wii U ended up accounting for less than 1% of sales, IIRC. There were a lot of articles claiming this sort of thing, in November.

SO, yeah, I think it's "unusually weak" in first person shooters and sports games. It's a little weird, actually.

It wasn't always that way. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Resident Evil 4, and other good exclusive shooters have existed on Nintendo systems in the past. It's just a weird gap right now.... heck, last I checked Nintendo hadn't even had a dev chosen for their next Metroid yet.

Right? Isn't it strange? I'm not saying it's a bad thing... since I can play that sort of game on the PC or a MS or Sony console, but it seems to me that Nintendo has become largely irrelevant in some genres of games... Shooters and sports games simply don't sell on the system.... 1% of COD sales, and Madden skipped them! It's, sort of weird!

Wii U games are primarily played with either the Wii U Gamepad http://www.chip.de/ii/2/2/9/6/7/4/9/3/wii1-b8adff8f743a0f82.jpg or the Wii U Pro Controller http://media.engadget.com/img/products/465/9yy6/9yy6-800.jpg

Wii remote and nunchuck are still supported in a lot of games for people who prefer them though.

The pro controller comes with a built in rechargeable battery rated at about 80 hours of use and comes with a usb charging cable for those wondering.

The games tell you on the back of the box which items they support. Although, it is kind of odd that most games that I've seen require you to manually switch between controller styles.

Here's the problem though, how many people own the nintendo pro controller? I have one. Secondly, the wii-u gamepad is clunky as hell - it's huge. It works "OK" but what if you have 4 friends wanting to play locally? Only one gets to use the gamepad, so the rest have to use the pro controller.

Nintendo innovates controllers but they have too many out and publishers probably can't depend on anyone having anything but a wiimote (non plus) and the U-gamepad.

Hence limited Nintendo success with sports games.

I'm defiintely tired of the wiimote + nunchuk.

I have one, so I guess that makes at least two Wii U owners.

Yeah, I prefer to use the pro controller if I have a choice, but you're still going to have to swap around if you do things like use the eShop, which requires the Gamepad. Also, I found that Wonderful 101 doesn't control all that well with the pro controller. I kept making the shapes with the right joystick, but nothing happened. I had no problems doing it with the Gamepad.

Remember how successful SNES launch was? Anyone would argue that was the height of the Nintendo age, and the golden age for video games.

Perspective: Wii U launch day sold more more than twice SNES launch units.

How does that mean Nintendo is dying just because there is also a Xbox and PS ?
