Mario Kart 8, no contest, especially since you get a free game DL with it. I got 3D World, and it got played once. It wasn't bad, it's just that Kart is better and Donkey Kong is 2-player max (we have 3 playing).

Got the Wii U Super Mario Bros. U package for $274.99 and then got the Buy 2 Games and Get 1 Free deal. I price matched the games on Amazon and the price was lowered. Plus, there is Zelda: The Wind Waker free when you purchase Mario Kart 8. All in all, good deals. Thanks.

That does sound good... do you have to purchase a specific version of MK8 to get the free game?

The different characters are factored in when you press the [+] button to check the stats of the kart and mods. If you select a setup with one character, go back, then do it with another, the stats will be different. Sadly, they don't give you an indication of the character's stats until you have selected that character.

Kart size on the character select screen gives the general idea of the stats.

Any copy will come with it, though I think the codes to get the free game expire August 31, and the free game code (the one you get after you choose your game) expires September 31.

I chose Wind Waker because all of the options were pretty weak. I played it for maybe 5 minutes and stopped because the tutorial was so boring.

You just need to register the game on Nintendo Club prior to a specific date.

I heard the one they made for the Wii works on the Wii U too, I got mine for $4.

Sweet! I had no idea that you could do this. Best Buy has one on clearance for $7.99, which appears to be a fairly standard adapter. I think my ASUS Zenbook's USB Ethernet adapter actually uses the same chipset, and it's black. The one at Best Buy is white, which doesn't match anything.

I tried to add it (the Rocketfish one), but while the product page said it was in stock, it wasn't in my cart. So, I just bought a USB 3 one from Newegg to toss on my laptop, which has USB 3, and I can see if the USB 2 one from my ASUS laptop will work with the Wii U. I'm guessing it probably will since I believe the ASIX Ethernet-to-USB chip is the same. Just for kicks, I'll also test the USB 3 one when it comes in.

Oh, this thread. I guess this is a good place to rant.

I recently finished Wind Waker HD. Looks pretty. Unfortunately it sucked. I had played it before back when it was released on the GCN, and I had forgotten everything, but I remembered mostly feeling positive about it. Now after replaying it, I realized its actually a pretty mediocre game. Terrible story, terrible characters, boring dungeons (not enough either), easy pinata enemies, feels half-finished, tons of pointless empty space.

LOL when I finished the last dungeon, I didn't realize it was the last one. I had only played a few hours to get to that point. "Oh shit, I'm almost done ALREADY? That was it?All that is left is that stupid fetch quest? WTF!"

Anyways, MEH/10.

Wind Waker is a polarizing Zelda title. I personally feel it's the worst 3D Zelda by miles, but a coworker of mine believes it's the best 3D Zelda. When we talk about it, both of us get pretty frustrated.

The main thing about Wind Waker, is that it's not a game made for the original core Zelda audience. Which was infuriating to the fanbase when it first released, but ultimately helped open up the series to more people. I think Wind Waker was particularly effective in recruiting new young players, and certain female players.
- On the flipside, I think it helped drive many of the original Zelda fans to better appreciate games like the Elder's Scrolls series.

Wind Waker is a good introduction to Zelda games for it's target audience. It's easier enemies and more linear dungeons make sense, if you consider that the game is intended to be accessible to younger players. The characters are simple, but they're colorful, and pretty expressive (especially for the time). Tetra the Pirate was a pretty good hit with the young female target audience.

I personally HATE this type of practice though. I feel that if you build a brand, like Zelda, on a certain fanbase, that there's something not right about using the brand to try to recruit a new fanbase, when it's to the detriment of the original fans. I think a series should prioritize the fans that helped make it successful to begin with!
- I think the new Tomb Raider is a great game, but have the same beef with it as I do with Wind Waker. I think it's a good game for a new audience, but a horrible game for much of the original audience...

For some, Wind Waker represents the point in history when Nintendo abandoned most of the core gamer audience, and decided that they were going to concentrate on games for children and more casual players. Which is why I personally feel it was a HORRIBLE choice in a remake, to try to bring players back to the Wii U with nostalgia.

I agree...Mario Kart 8 is the way to go. DK is too hard lol

I got around to playing the GCN version fairly recently. It's alright but by no means the best Zelda game. I really loved Okami so I did enjoy the colourful, cell shaded art style. I can see why people don't like it though. It's easier and more linear than previous games. Also despite having a huge world to explore, it's pretty empty.

For me, Zelda reached it's peak with Majora's Mask. I've played a bit of Twilight Princess. It's alright. I hear Skyward Sword is a bit polarizing as well. I did really enjoy Minish Cap and A Link Between Worlds. Hated Phantom Hourglass though. The DS is probably my least favourite Nintendo system.

I'm still wanting to pick up a Wii U but most likely sometime in the fall. Hyrule Warriors actually looks like something I'd like. DKC: Tropical Freeze too even though everyone says it's hard. Sissies. I still haven't beaten the original Donkey Kong Land though.

DKC is not SUPER hard. I would say the version prior to that was even harder. It's definitely harder than any mario game the last few years, but my sister and I got through world 1 fairly easily. I don't know the definition of easy, we definitely died here and there, and usually world 1 is the easiest..lol

The Donkey Kong Country/Land games were always pretty challenging back on the SNES and Gameboy. Though certainly not as unforgiving as some NES platformers. I beat DKL 2 & 3 back in the day but. Just not the first one. The pirate one is still my favourite.

I agree DKC was a little more difficult than mario games. There are just some unforgiving parts that maybe only The Wizard could get through (i.e. the reflexes needed are a little on the memory side).

I think Super Mario brothers: The lost levels, is one of the most difficult games I've ever played/beaten.

So I finally bit the bullet and picked up the $200 refurb deal Nintendo was offering. Comes with Nintendo Land. Will get it delivered sometime next week.

What's everybody playing these days?

Mario Kart is probably the most popular game right now. Bayonetta 2 comes out at the end of the month, which also includes the original Bayonetta. Smash Bros comes out next month, and that'll sell a ton. Other than that, you can probably assume that people are playing the only games that ever sell for Nintendo consoles: the first-party games.

I guess you can count me as one of those people that saw Mario Kart 8 and finally went and bought a Wii U. Also got Super Mario and Super Mario 3D Land, fun stuff. Haven't owned a Nintendo console since the SNES.

SNES was last nintendo for me too, Wii U will be my second console purchase in one year lol. I was so close to getting one on sale and being 3 bills lighter in my wallet. Mario Kart + free game, 3D Mario, Donkey Kong etc. maybe this holiday season.. I know what I will be doing when its snowing out

I'm quite happy with mario kart 8, but they need some original titles. Still waiting on a new Zelda, and Smash Bros.

It shipped. :awe:
Won't get it until Tuesday at the earliest since Monday is a holiday here. The wait is already killing me.

I might pick up Wind Waker since it's pretty cheap right now.

If you like CoD games and couch co-op/multiplayer, CoD: Blops 2 and Ghost can be found for dirt cheap on Wii U. I think I got Ghosts for $12 at Toys R Us a few months back and Blops 2 for $6 at Best Buy a few weeks ago. I like the Wii U versions the best because I can play with a friend with one on the TV and one on the Gamepad. Nintendo really needs to make more games with this feature. Hyrule Warriors has it, so I might pick that up when it's on sale.

Is the 32GB WiiU (with the two super bros games) worth the ~$300 or should I wait? Is there any way to expand the storage on it?

You should be able to find it cheaper than that. You can usually find some deal that gets it to around $250 (brand new) that may be a straight-up (temporary) price drop or through things like a gift card (Target does that a lot). As for expanding upon the memory, you can attach USB storage (just like with the XBOX One) -- Nintendo Storage FAQ.

A couple things you may also want to consider are...

  • Larger Gamepad Battery - The Gamepad's battery is a bit small at around 1500mAH where the larger one is around 2500mAH. Note that Nintendo does not sell these in the United States, which means that you'll have to buy one from an importer like PlayAsia to which I've linked. I did see an $18 battery charger on Amazon, which acts like a smartphone charging case where it charges your Gamepad when it gets low. Personally, I'd prefer a larger battery, but the charger is 1/2 the price (including the hefty shipping from PlayAsia).
  • USB Ethernet Adapter - Personally, I've had some rather flaky performance with the Wi-Fi on my Wii U, and what made it worse was that it quite literally sits right next to a switch, but Nintendo didn't put an Ethernet port on it. However, you can buy one of these adapters, and hook them up. Note, you do need a specific adapter as not all chipsets are supported. The one that I linked is the one that I own. It's a little bulky, but it works well.
