Its actually more important for the younger people to get out, since habits (good and bad) form early in life. If they get addicted to the pretty flashing lights during childhood their supposed adulthood is gonna suck.
And for those of us that hit the gym every morning playing games in the evening after school or work isnt gonna hurt too much.
There are many positives to playing PC games - including hand-eye coordination and keeping the mind sharp - and you never know, those aliens may attack someday.

i even managed to snag some work related to this industry, so there are opportunities to monetize yourself as a gamer.

It is important to be *balanced* ... or so they say

I was getting burnt out a year or two ago, but it seems like this year i'm having a hard time keeping up with all the great backlog of games I have piled up. This year i've played through Metro 2033, Stalker Clear Sky and Call Of Pripyat, Singularity, Borderlands, and one or two others i'm forgetting. I just installed Witcher 2 and have been getting into that. Now I just need to just find the time to play the rest of the games I bought off Steam recently..

I agree that there have been a lot of rehashes and unoriginal titles over the last couple years, but there are a few good gems too. Almost too many for me with my limited time to game anymore.. Cheap Steam sales have really allowed me to try some of the games I missed out on. And if they end up sucking I only wasted a small amount of money and then I can move on to the next game on my Steam list. I have about 20 games I bought off Steam that I need to get to "sometime".. lol

Unfortunately, there's increasing emphasis on MMOs. E.g., look at KOTOR. They turned it into an MMO. Okay, I'm sure it will be cool and all, fun with friends etc. but you can bet it won't be as chiseled as the previous KOTOR games were. MMOs kill elaborate game design.

Give the masses what's best for the average mass. And sure, some people (perhaps many) will find them sufficiently entertaining. But Baldur's / KOTOR / Fallout / etc. fans will have a very hard time finding quality fun.

Not to mention consoles with their infinite simplicity.

I sort of feel the same way. A game that really draws me in is one that I cant wait until I get home from work to play it. Some games I have played that made me feel that way were KOTOR 1, Titan Quest, COD 4 Modern Warfare (only the first one) Mass Effect 1 and 2 and to a lesser extent Dragon Knight Saga. But nothing recently has been as exciting.

Dungeon Seige 3 was a disaster, Dragon Age 2 only ok, all the modern warfare games are rehashes of the original. Portal 2 is OK, but I suck at it so it is frustrating as well as funny and challenging. I have bought some old games on steam (Fear, Gothic series, Brothers in Arms), but none have really got me that interested either.

I still have hope for the next Starcraft game, Diablo 3, Skyrym and Mass Effect 3.

I've been wondering (and dreading) if there will ever come a moment when my body and brain will hit that age-related switch that makes me stop liking games and start gaining interest in "adult" things (perhaps my lawn). There have been several times when I thought that I may have reached this point, but along would come some special game that would be as fun to play as I ever remembered any past game.

I'm starting to think that there is no such milestone. I'm just harder and harder to please with every new game I play. Recent game that I've loved and played the pants off of are Starcraft II, Borderlands and all the DLC, Prototype, Portal 2, Dead Space 2, Resident Evil 5, Darksiders, Batman: AA, and maybe a couple others I can't remember. The thing is, I had to buy and play a little bit of dozens of other games (fortunately acquired on sale) to find those gems. The truth is that if I were a new gamer, and every genre was a new experience to me, I would be able to enjoy far more of the games coming out today. I'm just too jaded by my own experience now.

I agree with the OP, the only game I pretty much play is League of Legends, and that's because I have nothing else to play. I'm basically forced to play it to squeeze a little entertainment out of my day.

I have tons of good games on my list to play but I find I have a harder time making myself start them. Once I do I usually enjoy them but for some reason even when I'm really bored I have a hard time starting a new one.

Very well stated.

Funny to hear one gamer lecture another gamer on a gaming forum about physical exercise.

If you think I am a "gamer" you are sadly mistaken. I did 9 years in the Navy, first as a deck hand and worked my way into the Advanced Electronics Program. Currently going back to school for my business degree and maintaining a 3.9 GPA. I hit the gym every morning and the gun range every other night.
Video games are mostly a way to kill time in between study sessions. I just dont like getting ripped off so I post a lot in PC gaming to discuss good and bad games.

Same here! Buying games during a sale is much safer than spending $50 or $60 on some garbage you'll never play. Especially since you can't return games any longer.

It's just too bad we rarely get demos anymore. I used to gauge what games I wanted to buy new based on the demo. Now I just buy older games for $5 off Steam.. Not so great for the industry, but hey.. put out a goddamned demo! They are still releasing demos on the consoles so why not for the PC? Especially given the fact most every big budget game is cross platform. Boggles my mind..

Gaming to me is just like any other hobby. It comes and goes, I don't have to constantly be doing it. I go through phases of bicycling, hiking, gaming, watching movies, swimming, and many other activities. If it gets boring to me, I stop doing it. I'm not sure why this is such a big deal.
Just do something else while waiting for something that you really want to play.
If the gaming industry ended today, the world would not end, we'd just find something else to do.

Me too. The awesome thing about Steam to me is introducing me to Indie titles that I never would have heard of otherwise. Runespell and 4 Elements have been my diversions of choice lately.

I am really looking forward to HoMM6. I preordered through Steam and got access to the Beta, and it has proven to be an awesome game. I am more excited about this game than I have been about anything in a long time.

I'm getting close to having 300+ PC games under my belt. I've been collecting more than just playing. Gaming is not much as interesting compared to my teeny years. But once it a while, it's good to turn on the gaming machine and do some fraggin once in a while. I got to finish GOG like Red faction and indie titles such as sanctum and kerbal space program.

The GYM is taking my free time for all what it worth :3
