I enjoy the odd FPS for its single player campaign. Online battles interest me very little. The game I play most at the moment is NFS:HP and CIV5. Haven't really touched Half Life or GTA4. SSF4:AE I'll get around to playing some day.

I don't game as much as I do when I was in high school. When I'm bored of what's on the internet or movies I'll jump over to gaming.

Maybe if they had Super Mario World for the PC I'll be glued to the tubes like yesteryears. The iPhone 4 has satisfied my mobile gaming needs in short idle spurts.

I have been kinda bored of games in general except for a few here and there. On the flip side, I've always been a pinball person. I own a few real tables and recently, I rediscovered the joys of virtual pinball. I even went so far as to begin building my own virtual pinball cabinet. Lots of work, but so much fun in the end. I'm sure some of you MAME people can appreciate.

The last five PC games I've played have been Rift, Shogun 2, Plants vs. Zombies, Cthulhu Saves the World, and Just Cause 2. I like all of them, but the first four sound like they may not be your cup of tea.

If you haven't played Just Cause 2 you should check it out based on the other games you like. It's an open world shooter on a very large tropical island (with roads and cities), and as you blow stuff up and cause chaos you can control areas. You also unlock some scripted missions that don't really matter too much but have some neat variety.

ZeroPunctation review here (NSFW): http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/1632-Just-Cause-2

I also second the recommendation of console gaming. There are some fun PS3 exclusives (Uncharted 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Demon Souls, Heavy Rain, Infamous 1/2), and a lot of third person action games do play better on a controller than they do with mouse and keyboard.

I wouldn't say the OP is getting old but instead say he probably has experienced more styles of game play (along with many plot lines) then younger players and thus is no long satisfied or kept interested by the same rehashed game play seen in most games.

This maybe be why he is just "bored with gaming". Frankly speaking when it comes to game play mechanics it seems to me at least that game play innovations have not kept paced with the leaps in technology and graphics. A lot of games still play very much like games designed 5+ or 10+ years ago at their core. Then when you couple this idea with games that also have rehashed or uninspiring or no plots I can see why the OP would eventually get bored with gaming.

If you think I am a "gamer" you are sadly mistaken. I did 9 years in the Navy, first as a deck hand and worked my way into the Advanced Electronics Program. Currently going back to school for my business degree and maintaining a 3.9 GPA. I hit the gym every morning and the gun range every other night.
Video games are mostly a way to kill time in between study sessions. I just dont like getting ripped off so I post a lot in PC gaming to discuss good and bad games.

mkay...

Didn't mean to upset you, there, Shorty... Wasn't trying to imply that you're a gamer "by profession".

I suggest

Mass Effect

Mass Effect

Oh, and don't forget Mass Effect.

I can't get into mass effect. Same with the other bioware RPGs. A lot of it has to do with the time you spend staring at NPC faces choosing ambiguous dialog options to learn things I'm mostly not interested in knowing. They just seem to draaaaagg in general.

Getting bored with gaming

Dude... If I had a dollar for everytime I heard that, I'd be a rich, rich man.

Ya know what I did when I got bored with gaming? I stopped playing games! I tried to read a book for a change, tried to learn someone new, started working out, started going out more. Neverming the factthat I failed at most of it. What matters is I tried, and I did this long enough to stop thinking about playing games. Wehn I came back, there were plenty of good games. And if this wasnt the case, I'd wait some more. The world doesnt end because of the lack of good games.

the games that have kept my attention the most, recently, are Fallout NV, Borderlands, and now X3:TC. that one is ruining me.

certainly not a mainstream type game, so maybe that helps.

I agree with the OP, the only game I pretty much play is League of Legends, and that's because I have nothing else to play. I'm basically forced to play it to squeeze a little entertainment out of my day.

sounds like a personal problem rather than a problem with games.

I seriously doubt you can argue that playing video games is superior at developing hand-eye coordination than, say, baseball, tennis, hockey, football, bicycle riding....

Don't get me wrong, video games are great...but they are the "saturated fats" of human activity.

There are many positives to playing PC games - including hand-eye coordination and keeping the mind sharp - and you never know, those aliens may attack someday.

i even managed to snag some work related to this industry, so there are opportunities to monetize yourself as a gamer.

It is important to be *balanced* ... or so they say

Lost most of my interest in gaming a couple years ago. However, there are occasional breakthroughs that hold my attention. I'm still looking forward to Half Life 3, but not much else. I have a huge backlog of games ready to play, they just don't interest me. Partly it's me, and partly it's the staggering lack of creativity and interesting/challenging/well written games out there. I really don't care about graphics that much...it can look really great and still suck. Witness all the Star Wars movies after "The Empire Strikes Back".

Sure i can. Try playing your outdoor sports in the dead of Winter - or when the heat index is 120F outside.

The average gamer is 37 years old and may not be able to play competitive sports or ride bikes for the next 40 years. However they will be able to play PC games in most cases to keep their minds sharp into old age.

At least that is my own plan. i just need to secure a steady supply of games and hardware for review long past my "retirement".

Mass Effect is a really good game, just get past the citadel and you'll be hooked on it. The beginning is slow so I don't blame you, I actually stopped playing it after 30 minutes my first time around because I got bored.

Dragon Age on the other hand I absolutely despise. I hate the story, the game play, and the combat system. Other people seem to enjoy it though but I just couldn't play it even after spending an hour on it hoping something would spark my interest.

it's probably better than football and bike riding, but not baseball, hockey, tennis.

Believe me, I'm the last person to advocate for any tangible benefits coming from video games, but the hand-eye coordination is certainly real.

but more than that, it does increase dexterity. One group (Standford, I think), did a study not too long ago looking at the younger crop of surgical interns and how much quicker they take to lathroscopic techniques than do the older, far more seasoned attending surgeons.

the gains in dexterity can be quite significant--if you realize those gains in a professional field that actually utilizes dexterity. I worked for two years making transgenic mice, which involves some rather serious macroscopy (injecting stem cells into fertilized embryos; then transferring the embryos into mice), and I do think the younger years with console (gamepad) video games helped quite a bit with dealing with those rather fine scope controls.

I haven't played much in the way of PC games for a while. I went for quite a while hardly playing anything, but I recently picked up LA Noire, and also resumed Forza 3 on the 360.

Nothing really grabbed me in the way of PC games since Mass Effect 1 and 2 (which if you haven't tried yet, you should).
