Getting burned out on zombies

It seems like the makers of any type of visual media have inundated us with zombies for quite some time now. Movies, video games, and TV shows have been milking it with a ferocious abandon. So much so that the zombie effect has fully burned out in me. I see one in a game, movie, or TV show in what is supposed to be a scary scene and all I can think of is "meh". Most of the time now I'm just annoyed. Annoyed in the same way when I see kids with Bieber cuts or when I overhear people in the office talking about a new iPhone. It's getting that bad.

The zombies in the walking dead are meh.
The ones in 28 days/weeks later were scary since they were fast.

I'm with you, man. I've been into zombie since I was a little kid and saw the original NotLD. Watched the original DotD over and over as a kid. I think the zombie genre peaked with the DotD remake in 2004 and has slowly gone downhill ever since.

Unlike vampires, there's not much you can do with the genre. Is basically pick slow or fast and choose your armageddon.

I've read plenty of zombie books, seen tons of zombie movies, played countless zombie games but it's to "hollywood" now or something.

To main stream and refined.

The 28 Days movies and the Dawn of the Dead remake are my top favorite movies but nothing noteworthy has been out since by a long shot IMO.

I watch The Walking Dead but it's not great, just good enough to way with the hope it gets better.

Zombies are simply the least offensive human-like adversary. If you pit your protagonist against Nazi's you might offend some germans (in an embarassment sense, not that they're "pro-Nazi"). Similarly, since the end of the cold war, Russians aren't the archetypal foes that they used to be in popular media. Lately it's been just terrorists and zombies.

If you were going to author a story of conflict wherein the protagonist could appear clearly justfied to indiscriminately wreak whatever gruesome havoc he desired against his foes, against which foes would you pit him? If not zombies, then who? Republicans?

The slow Zombie AKA the Romero Zombies is better in my opinion due to the slow build up to them finally catching someone.

You think this is entertainment? The government knows that the zombie apocalypse is coming and they're afraid to admit it because it would lead to widespread panic and looting. The zombie media inundation is the governments efforts to publish survival guides without coming out and admitting what's happening. Those who do not learn the secrets are destined to become Zombie Chow.

It would certainly liven things up if horror movies were offensive. Like they once were before their content became the norm.

It would certainly liven things up if horror movies were offensive. Like they once were before their content became the norm.

I don't really disagree, but I suspect that the marketing people seek to "sanitize" certain storylines so as to appeal to the broadest audience by not alienating anyone.

I am Legend also has fast/smart zombies, doesn't mean they aren't zombies, or at least the viral/possessed strain of zombies

The real question is: Fast Moving Zombies vs Shambling/Slow Moving Zombies? There is no such thing as Smart vs. Dumb Zombies; that's just ridiculous.

Nobody could survive a Fast Moving Zombie Apocalypse. However, I think that once you have died, you should probably slow down a bit and take it easy. Thus, I think it would be more of a Slow Moving Zombie Apocalypse.
