Yeah, this is my tactic...I love letting people drive it and showing them how to press passed the "click" in the gas pedal to get the twin-scroll turbo purring Problem is you can't get to everyone. Oh well...probably overthinking things.

What you driving these days?

I sold the Viper in preparation for C8 + bidding war ammo on a house, but those aren't out yet. I still have my Focus RS that I barely ever drive now because I don't want to put 60 garbage miles a day on it. Daily driving a GX 470.

Over the next couple years the GX 470 will probably turn into a Rivian R1T, and a C8 shortly after. RS will likely go away as it's somewhat pointless with that pair.

OP, are you the guy that had the Z4 and mentioned it in like every post he made for about a year? Because if so, they're acting like that because you're being insufferable about it and trying to humblebrag just like this thread so they're probably poking fun because you're acting hoighty toighty about it to them. It very well might be full blown sarcastic. Or they might just be mad about you rubbing it in their face.

Non car people simply have no frame of reference for what things are worth beyond what they cost when they were new. When I had my Viper I several times overheard comments at gas stations talking about my 'six figure car.' Similarly at work many people assumed it was $100k+ and many made comments about me/my group (coworker with 911/Cayenne, boss with 944, me with Viper, etc) being overpaid and the 'fancy car club'. Never mind the fact that both the 911 and the Viper cost us less than many of the cars these people drove, and the Cayenne far less. If people brought it up to me I'd happily tell them what I actually paid for it ($33,000) and that it was still worth basically what I paid for it making my cost of ownership essentially gas + tires. Not insubstantial of course for something that is 100% a toy, but far less TCO than most people's cars that don't get a second glance.

My general practice is to treat it as an educational opportunity. I'm always happy to share my fun cars with people because even if it's only $33k it's still something that you don't see every day and most people have no exposure to.

IMO the best way to not get bored of your fun car is to share it with other people. Take them for rides, better yet let them drive it. Near daily driving of a Viper warps your perspective of what normal cars can do, having a passenger seat view of someone else discovering it for themselves brings back all the joy. All it takes is someone you trust to listen to you and a quick primer - 'don't floor it unless you're pointed in a straight line' and I never had any issues.

Viper GTS

Its a bit more than that though. Plus like your remark about them costing less than what other people drive. Yes, if you ignore the year. Its much easier to justify the purchase of a newer vehicle which is intended as your primary vehicle for several years (i.e. their level of vehicles of the same year would be quite a lot cheaper), whereas buying a higher end older vehicle, is seen as buying it for the flash still because generally the aspects that made it stand out when it was new, still make it stand out, until it basically flips into being a classic, which will carry the same appeal still, just that its old enough that you're likely foregoing a lot of benefits of newer vehicles for it. If you have the ability to afford a Viper, you already have another vehicle too, so that's part of it as well.

Also, holy shit at you letting other people (I'm assuming not full on randos though?) drive your Viper. Granted they'd need to be able to drive manual so that'll mean they have at least some driving chops and appreciation for driving these days.

I buy cars that make me happy (Viper, RS) or that have stupid reliability/utility (GX). What you're describing may apply to how most people think, but car people are a different breed. I'd drive a fucking pink minivan if it drove like the Viper did.

As for letting people drive it... I offered to plenty of random people, few accepted. Generally coworkers/friends of family would be the only takers. And yes, ability/comfort to drive stick was the primary factor - Many people simply don't have it and would decline based on that.

Properly maintained Vipers are remarkably docile if you follow the basic rule of don't floor it in a corner. In this case properly maintained means tires that are reasonably new. At 5 years they should be retired regardless of tread depth or appearance. It's basically impossible to buy a non sticky tire in Viper sizes so if they aren't old they have stupid amounts of grip. You have do something really, really reckless to get yourself into trouble. I put nearly 15000 miles on that car and the only times I remotely scared myself were with brand new tires (mold release not worn off yet). Once I did 3.55 gears on it driving it in cold weather got dicey but prior to gears even cold weather was not a huge issue.

How's the transmission holding up on that RS? Almost bought one some time back but the transmission issues kinda soured me + the Recaro seats just plain did not fit my body.

I've been watching the Rivian too. Amazing looking. Wonder if it'll live up to the hype. Mid-engined Vette is exciting too...said they start at $60K but betting they'll be marked up to $80

Are you sure they're shaming you because of the car?

Isn't it far more likely that you left ATOT up on your computer and they've happened across your post history?

LOL- they're shaming me for really bad jokes and smartass comments?

sounds like my 2014 C300 benz. but i found it with 21`k miles. love it and i love the looks i get of "holy shit you drive a benz?"

if you pay $10K more for a cheap car, you're OK, but if you spend less on a well made luxury car...

I don't understand how this applies in your case, you didn't list any well made luxury cars in your original thread.

It goes the other way too. With certain jobs, age or houses people expect a certain level of vehicle. If you don't come up to that level you'll get glances and comments. I ran into that when we had two civics and one was a decades + old body style VP edition. Happens much less now that I have a Camry XLE and people have seen me drive my TT around.

But, for reals, who pay more than $18,000 for a car??

I have a 2013 Impala and parked next to a Lambo last week. I though it was a nice car and thanked heaven I don't have to pay the insurance or mechanics tab on something like that.

It's not about the car but why anyone lets their car determine there inherent value as a person. Buffet drove a Crown Vic at one time.

I get the same thing with my 2016 C7 Z06. Got a good deal on it used, but it did MSRP for $110K when new. Get comments about it all the time.

To be fair, younger folks don't care nearly as much about cars anymore.

I do recall getting some comments from my folks when we bought an Acadia a few years back. Then again they always bought the cheapest model of whatever car they were getting....never even considered a few more dollarbucks for creature comforts.

I remember AC in their 1991 Accord was a dealer installed option!

TIL turbos going out is "little shit"

Yeah...not exactly an easy job. The turbo in my Mini was supposed to be made out of glass, yet it was working fine after 140K miles. I think it comes down to keeping the oil changed and not screwing with tunes/mods. The more people brag about "I ADDED STAGE 2 THIS AND BOOSTED THAT", the more they're on forums with "Hey...anyone know what code 2344ppW means? My car died at 60K miles! Piece of junk!"

IMHO lack of maintenance is what really kills turbos. Adding boost shouldn't matter at all.

I tend to agree, but I can't help but judge people who drive lifted trucks on monster tires with political/raunchy bumper stickers and black smoke coming out of vertical exhausts.
