Heh, I was sorta surprised when I got my MB I wasn't shamed. In fact it gets lots of compliments and questions about it at gas stations or other random places. The amusing part is adjusting the analog clock on the dash for them and watch how it works.

Best conservation I had was at a gas station. Lady who drove a nice Escalade walks over to me, says "is that a...cool. My husband drives a 760i. The world needs more V12s." That's my type of woman.

Coincidentally, gas stations are where all the V12 fans meet.

Heh, yeah. 11.7 MPG around town driving. Highway it jumps to 20-22. I tend to drive with an easy pedal but every once in a while (meaning clear road ahead) do the Italian tune-up.

Glad someone else ate the gas guzzler tax. And of course the 100K+ of depreciation.

That kind of gas mileage sounds great to me. I would trade you gas mileage in a heartbeat, especially that highway mileage.

Wow the xA is even smaller then my Fit and that's a freaking go-cart!

And I still love BMW despite costs involved with owning one ... if I had the money I would be driving something like this myself!

It's actually amazingly roomy inside- if you fold the back seats down you can fit 26 bags of mulch back there I use it as a pickup truck/grocery store runner.

what vehicles get worse MPG than that?
My 2005 Lexus LX470. It's rated at 13 city / 17 highway. Realistically I get about 11-13 city and 15-16 highway. I generally get about 13-14 mpg combined city/highway. Here's a picture from today since my last fill up. So far I've averaged 11.5 mpg for the last 85 miles or so since fill up.

No, the 100 series Land Cruiser drinks gas and its natural habitat is the gas station. But I knew that before I bought the vehicle. My 2002 Toyota Tundra SR5 has the same 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8. It's awesome engine that will run forever but the engine just drinks gas like crazy. My Tundra gets slightly better gas mileage like maybe 2 mpg better since it's about 1,500 pounds lighter than the LX470.

The maintence stigma isn't correct- 10-20 years ago US mechanics didn't have some special tools to work on Euro cars, so you were forced to go to the dealership for repairs. Since the 2012+ redesigns, BMW's have actually been pretty reliable (even reaching top 10 status with JD Powers this year):

A lot of the reliability stories come from the bro' community too: "I just installed a stage 3 turbo with a Japanese tune and converted to run E85 and I'm pulling 600HP!"

two weeks later

"My car broke, going to be $10000 for a new engine. BMWs ARE CRAP!"
Not talking problems reported....not talking stigma either. Look up average maintenance cost comparisons for vehicles and you'll see BMW and KIA near the top of the list. Common parts are imported and hit with tariffs....mechanics are specialized and charge more. It's just a car and some parts/servicers come at a premium. I don't care about maintenance plans much...I don't believe in warranties 90% of the time because they're too short. I'm talking about oxygen sensors, specific controllers, relays, and other things you can't pick up from any auto parts store aftermarket.

I tend to agree, but I can't help but judge people who drive lifted trucks on monster tires with political/raunchy bumper stickers and black smoke coming out of vertical exhausts.
Yea, we get a lot of those around here, every possible means to make the truck as loud and obnoxious as possible is taken, then they like to lane-hog people off the damm road. Trunk nuts are mandatory, not an option, anyone needing that kind of attention is a squirrel-dick asshole.

The only expensive parts are really OEM parts (well...some of them...things like wiper blades and oil filters can actually be cheaper from OEM). There are a lot of 3rd party parts manufacturers out there now that sometimes make better quality items than OEM. My Mini was like that- water pump/thermostat from 3rd party fixed a critical design flaw and it was $200 less expensive. Same with the clutch kit.

I've been a "car guy" since I was a kid. I loved collecting Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, building models, racing and building go karts, working on cars...been that way my whole life. Therefore, I buy cars that I actually WANT instead of getting anything off the shelf and using it like an appliance. I have a talent for finding affordable high-end cars with a great support community, so that's what I tend to get. Over the decades I've had some VW Beetles, an Alfa Romeo Spyder, an MGB, a Mini, an Audi, and a BMW...and now I'm on my 2nd BMW.

The people on my office are nice and well paid, but I'm 10-12 years older than most of them, so we're at different stages of life. Therefore I'm getting the "oooo...rich guy!" and "I'm not in your league", or "Mr. Snobby" comments constantly, yet I paid less for this car than most of their new Kias, Hondas, and Hyundais sitting in the lot. I'm an overly nice and modest person, so the comments kind of cut at my core a bit. I got a car for a great price that I always wanted, and the image that comes with it kinda sucks.

So-TLR: if you pay $10K more for a cheap car, you're OK, but if you spend less on a well made luxury car that you know how to maintain, you're a rich snob that's overstepping your station.

I try to keep my car out of sight at work just to avoid comments like that. There is an upper parking lot and not very many people park up there so that is where I hide my car. Great for avoiding door dings too.

BTW-I picked up a 2017 AMG C63 Cabriolet recently. I fricken love this car! Notice the complete lack of other cars nearby? I took this pic at my work.

My boss drives a Mercedes though so he understands. There are some nice cars here for sure but most drive econo-cars, SUVs or shit boxes.

Wow! That's the one with the V8, right? Fantastic! (Not as nice as a BMW M4, but fantastic! )

Really, no need for anyone to "shame" another for what they drive, after all, if we had the financial wherewithal we'd be doing the exact same thing, I've yet to see a Wells Fargo truck at a funeral yet, right?. That being said please, please don't adopt the shitty idea of parking so two spots are occupied to avoid door-dings, that annoys everyone to no end.
