Getting my little 6yr old sister to zip her jacket.

Hi guys, I am new to this forum so here is a little bit about myself . I am an 18yr old Scottish girl who lives at home in order to babysit my little sister whilst parents are at work. I am currently at college doing a course on childcare so that works well as both me and my sister finish at the same time which means I can pick her up from school.

My sister likes being active outdoors a lot so, when it's not pleasant and especially now that winter is approaching, me and my parents like her to be appropriately dressed for these conditions.

During winter, we get really cold temperatures with the liklihood of lying snow so we always advise her to fully wrap up by wearing a nice warm jacket, a hat, scarf and gloves. She quite happily wears all these, however, she will always battle us on if she requires the jacket zipped. We advise that she does zip it due to the freezing conditions but she just sulks which results in me having to zip it, but she just complains that I have zipped it to high up, I zip it right to the top then do up the velcro.

My daughter wore what she wanted. I supplied her with appropriate clothes, and she could wear them or not. Unless the kid's a vegetable, they'll figure out what it takes to cool down/warm up.

Sometimes I wear fingerless gloves so I can handle the zippers. But I often get frostbite. Once I get a real job, I can afford full-fingered gloves.

Brain dead. Not a fully functioning member of society. If a six year old doesn't know when they're cold, they probably also need to be spoonfed, and have their nappies changed. It happens. Gotta play with the cards you're dealt.

No, she does not need to be spoon-fed, or anything else, she's fairly independent!!
It's just that she needs to be asked to wear and zip her jacket, especially during winter.

Punish her for being disobedient. Have your parents tell her that if she doesn't zip when told, she'll get ... uhh ... up to them.

Oh yes, they have told her that she won't get out when it's cold or a loss of certain priveleges such as her playstation.

We have even sat her down to explain that by zipping her jacket, she is going to be nice and warm in winter.

My kid, now 17, has worn shorts year round. Whatever he can get adjusted to and makes him happy.

No, there is not. Six year olds are not developmentally able to relate cause and effect of relative conditions.

That is what I end up doing after about 5 minutes once I have accepted that she won't obey me lol but, in fairness to my sister, she never tries to unzip it, instead she sulks.

Life isn't fair. Do not propagate or spread "woe is me" B.S. to younglings. Bust their asses if they need it. Love on them all the time. Simple.
