I'M 45.
5 OR 6 YEARS BACK, I HAD A MASSIVE HEMORRHAGE AND RETINAL DETACHMENT IN MY LEFT EYE. EVEN AFTER SURGERY, THAT EYE WAS UNUSEABLE.

THIS PAST SUNDAY, I HAD A MAJOR HEMORRHAGE IN MY RIGHT EYE. NO DETACHMENT OF THE RETINA (YET) BUT MY VISION IN THE RIGHT IS NEARLY AS BAD AS MY LEFT.

THIS IS WHAT 40+ YEARS OF "BRITTLE" TYPE 1 GETS YOU. I HONESTLY THOUGHT THAT MY KIDNEYS WOULD FAIL BEFORE BOTH OF MY EYES, BUT I GUESS I WASN'T SO LUCKY.

Personally, I like living. So, for me, dying sucks more than getting old.

THAT DEPENDS ON YOUR PERSONAL HEALTH AND HOW MUCH YOU VALUE LIFE WITHOUT THINGS LIKE VISION, MOBILITY, INDEPENDENCE, AUTONOMY, ETC.

BTW SORRY FOR THE CAPSLOCK...IT'S EASIER FOR ME TO READ AS I TYPE IT OUT. 350% SCALING AND 28pt FONT ON A 32" DISPLAY @ 4K...AND I STILL HAVE TO HAVE MY FACE 6 INCHES FROM MY SCREEN TO READ ANYTHING.

GETTING OLD DOESN'T NECESSARILY SUCK, BUT YOUR BODY GOING TO CRAP SURE DOES.

Sorry for your misfortune. I'm 65. I had a stroke at 59 due to a heart defect I was born with. It's since been repaired. Last year I lost my left leg above the knee in a motorcycle wreck. I've done well enough that even after having my other knee replaced, I'm waiting for my second prosthetic - with a computerized knee, to finish fabrication at the artificial limb store. Even with the challenges presented, I'm glad I'm alive.

I am autonomous, for the most part. I live alone and make all appointments, etc., by myself. Slightly less mobile, but I can do most things I want to do. Very independent. Self employed, and have been for a long time. Losing vision would be right at the top of things that I would NOT want to happen because of the difference in quality of life.

But, the word PERSONALLY, was the very first word in my post.

YEAH, I WAS VERY ACTIVE AND AN AVID CYCLIST UNTIL THE AGE OF 30 OR 31 WHEN PAINFUL NEUROPATHY BEGAN IN MY LOWER BODY. DESPITE LONGING FOR THE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY THAT I CAN NO LONGER DO, I'VE MANAGED TO ADJUST AND DEAL WITH IT.

THE LOSS OF MY VISION IS WEIGHING ON ME A LOT MORE HEAVILY DUE TO THE DAY-TO-DAY LIVING AND ABILITIES THAT IT WILL HAVE A GREATER EFFECT ON.

Please. Switch to Keto diet. It will have a healing effect on your body and it will also reduce the amount of insulin you need to inject yourself with. You can fight it and beat it. Just need to muster the willpower.

You can get the Keyto device to know for sure if your body is properly doing ketosis.

A fairly large filling I got seventeen years ago came out last night
Dentist will see me tomorrow afternoon, it's likely to be replaced with a crown, and probably should have been a crown the first time.

I have definitely pondered what it would be like if I experienced loss of vision like that, my sympathy. I have a friend that teaches kids who are blind/with impaired vision to navigate, which it hadn't occurred to me would even be a job, but it does make sense. In order to graduate, she had to make it from the school to public transit and some other place and back herself, without use of her eyes.

59 now, degenerative injuries started 2017, about 1 a year. Both bicep tendons, both rotator cuffs, knee meniscus, 1st carpal tunnel 6 weeks ago and the other Wednesday. Looks about like skyking's does.

45 years in the gym and have injuries but love the results of working out. Don't work out and have illnesses and look/feel like shit the whole time.

YMMV 😀

1st carpal tunnel 6 weeks ago and the other Wednesday

i imagine it's good to space those 2 out so you got a free hand when you need it

my wrist and forearm have hurt all winter for the past 3 or 4 years and i keep thinking it's carpal tunnel, but the doctor doesn't think so. as soon as spring comes everything feels fine again.

they dunno what it is, but said if i complain another winter then maybe they'll look at it.

You may be right. Carpal tunnel or arthritis.

Mix turmeric powder in extra virgin olive oil, sprinkle some black pepper on it and use as generous salad dressing at least twice a day. You will get much relief.

@DAPUNISHER
Just had the last one. Happy with the results of all but I have a really good guy.

@brianmanahan
6 weeks. Hands started going numb on the bike 8ish years ago. About 4 years ago, off the chain at night. Up multiple times. Wrist braces fixed that immediately until a some months back. Came back with a vengeance. Nerve conduction test said moderate/severe ct. Get it fixed or else.

Meh, deleted the bicep. Staples but not gory. Hate to get dinged.

What? Show us the staples, that's pretty damned metal. Stoked to read it all went well for you.

If I hadn't developed carpal tunnel damage (in both hands) at the age of TWELVE, I might have run into it eventually anyway, having been a bicycle mechanic for the better part of a two decade period.

That was wicked when I got it as a kid though...waking up middle of the night screaming in pain before even conscious. Hope it doesn't return (it does in some cases). Doctors at the time were baffled, and couldn't explain why a 12yo had it. I guess I was just ahead of my time? lol

Not sure if this pic is clear or not, hard for me to tell. If it's out of focus tell me and I'll nuke it...these are 30+ yr CT scars and you might be able to spot the 10ish yo trigger finger release scars there near the base of the index and middle fingers.

No pt. Right feels pretty good. The gym should take care the minor weakness.

The 1st pic is the inner thigh, 16 stitches, cause I told Boomer's ma she gave bad head. 😀😀

Actually, was pulling up tile/backerboard while standing over one section. It came free easier than I expected and the tile laid me open. Could have been way worse. Couple of inches from the femoral.😮

I warned you...her cremains box is heavy.

Anyway...yes, getting old sucks. It definitely ain't for the weak...but it's (usually) better than the alternative.

I made a thread about unexpected fitness injuries recently, could the reason for yours be the same: warm-ups?
I had a pec injury benching, I was pushing 50 YO at the time, I guess. My general practice at the time when benching was to get into it slowly, start light, increase weight gradually. At the time my max weight was probably 185lb for a set of 4, good form. One day I spotted an empty bench with, I figure, 205 already on it and just had the thought "I can do this" and went for it. I was violating my m.o. and paid for it. Took a year or so to get over it entirely. My m.o. had been to get to the point where I could do a weight 10 reps with good form after a good thorough warm up. Only then would I accept a higher max weight. At the time I was working out 7 days a week, around 1 1/2 hours in the weight room followed by 2 miles lap swim, then skate back home.
