Just for reference, this is currently THE CHEAPEST single family 3/2 in San Fran listed on Realtor.com

http://www.realtor.com/realestatean...Ave_San-Francisco_CA_94124_M23163-99430?row=1

Go ahead and take a look on Google street view and let me know if you'd buy this "starter" home for damn near $300K and be prepared to put another $100K to $150K in it immediately before you move in.

All I had to do is look at the location to know I wouldn't want to live there...My company used to have space at Hunter's Point Shipyard...The Hunter's Point/Bayshore area is the ghetto for SF.

Prop 13 is the reason I still own property in California. If not for that, I'd have been forced out long ago. When your tax payment is larger than your mortgage payment, something is seriously wrong.

My mortgage payment is zero, so ... :hmm:

But seriously, between income, sales, and property taxes here in CA, things are out of control. My wife and I are considering moving out eventually.

$1,600 for 1 bedroom apartment? You're doing it wrong unless you're trying to live in the heart of West LA/SF/Newport.

No, you can't have 2800 square feet. That was not the discussion.

Monterey area - not as easy as the big cities with tons of cities around them, but Seaside is next to it, with this perfectly adequate home for $299K:

http://www.zillow.com/homes/seaside...-121.223488,36.503565,-122.109261_rect/10_zm/

Not terrible, I'll grant that. I like that according to Zillow, it was last sold in April 2013 for $121K and now they're selling it for $300K. House flippers flipping a foreclosure after a remodel? Looks like most of the others in that general area are foreclosures too from what I can tell.

if both of you together make 100k, you could qualify for some low income housing in some areas. There is also some first time home buyer programs that will try to help you get up to the 20% downpayment of your average 2 bed 1 bath 650k house. What happens is you have to pay back the 20% downpayment within say 5 years but at a good low rate.

There's a lot of money to be made in California. Lots of people work 5-10 years at a breakneck pace at high wages in order to move out of the state and live as upper-middle class people at far cheaper places later on in life.

Its crazy, a city janitor can make 60k a year in some cities.

I'll say it before and I'll say it again, there's a reason why certain places are cheap to live at, because no one wants to live there.

I like how 300k is considered a "starter" house. No way in hell i could afford that. Well i could if i lived off top ramen and didnt do anything fun. And i make decent money for being single. Love my quiet, peaceful 1 acre i have now literally 5 minutes from dowtown portion of my town and 10 minutes from work.

Cali is nice for a couple weeks. Well San Diego at least. Spent 8 months there last year for work and 2 months this year. Its nice for about a week. Then the lack of anything green, constant brown haze over the city, Spanish being spoken more than English, and the crowds get to me. Positives for the area though...good food, its easy to get around (take i5 or 163 north and south, i8 east and west and cant get lost ) and thats about it IMO.

And thats not even getting into the politics side

But as others have said people will live where people want to live. If it werent for the paid for housing and per dium i sure as hell would never go to Cali

I love where I live. Whole town is friendly. My neighbors are the best as well. Need something like a tool or a cup of sugar and it's easy as asking. It's really the way it should be and what I imagine it was like back in the old days. I live in jogging distance of the city park where people aren't afraid to take their kids or walk their dogs. All the guys that come play basketball are polite and there is never fighting or the other macho bullshit you'll find at most basketball courts. Crime is almost non existent. I have a big ass house and a huge yard full of several hundred year old oak trees. I've seen deer, owls, hawks, heard some wild boar rummaging around, saw a turkey crossing the driveway once. It really is fantastic. I hope you find your little piece of this world that brings you the peace and happiness I have found here.

That's true, but I'd rather travel from more distant places where the housing is cheaper, rather than live in center of that place and pay $2 mil for house in SF, in dept till you die.
Traveling is costly too but way better option.
I dont live in the US, So i dont know about each different state.

I wanted to live in the UK -> London since i was a kid.
I have been there many times, Best place in the world, ever.
But LIVING there is not a vacation, its will be tough times to get used to it as your city, renting, working, blablabla , no friends ( i mean real friends and family ) and everything related to real life...

I came up with : " I dont want to live anywhere which i would feel a stranger or just ONE number of the total population, i want to live with my family and friends, No one else is worth more than them"

Just a little story about me, No on care here i know, but i had to say it.

So, my msg is, Just stay with your friends and family, dont waste your life living with strangers.
This varies, it's not a good idea to skip on your dreams or opportunities in other states or cities just because of friends and family, it's important to live own life, not being there because of fam and friends. On other side, the strangers will become friends. Your current friends were also strangers before, ofc if you have 2 kids and wife you won't leave them because of this. I just have to say that any of your friends will leave you instantly if they will get better chance to live, trust me on that one. I bet you are young and you gonna see how friends start to leave you in recent years very fast.

The people that say this are normally living in an over priced area and say it to make themselves feel better.

Not really...those people can just as easily pack up and move to a cheaper place. They usually don't because they don't want to live in a cheaper place. The same cannot be said about people living in poor areas.
