In the planning stages to get out. We make $100,000 with no debt, Cars paid off, have a smart budget for saving and we can't buy a house to save our lives. A typical, small, 1 story house with almost no front or back yard at all, surrounded by smog and cement and in a questionable part of town will cost us over half a million dollars, not including the $8,000/year property taxes.

$1,600/month for 1 bedroom apartment = go get fucked

$1,000/month for child care = removed

Get taxed to death on everything = removed
Cement jungle with no ability to buy land unless horribly rich = Removed

Choke and die from air pollution = YOU GUESSED IT (see above)

Clown show bullshit for everything relating to firearms = DIE IN A FIRE

Yes, we are soon gone. So long California.

You forgot 30+ kids elementary classroom size, no school buses, mello-roos, premium prices on gas, electricity, natural gas, water, etc.

And a Republican vote that will never count in the electoral college scheme of things.

We packed up and left California last November.

Went there for a 6-8 week construction job...stayed over 25 years.

Western Warshington...for now.

We decided it would be a nice place to winter out...and it's not a bad place to summer either.

The central valley is baking in 95+ weather...we MIGHT get to 80 tomorrow.

Was born and raised in California. Lived there for the first 31 years of my life but moved in 2007 to North Carolina. Still miss California every day and wish we never left.

Have you considered orange county? The quality of life is extremely high (imo) and you're only a short drive away from L.A. 1 bd apartment will be around 1100/month in decent areas and there are plenty of parks and yards.

FYI, you will pay double for all you things you listed in SF. That place is the real overpriced shithole.

Yeah there are alot of positives and negatives with living in California. Unfortunately, the negatives seem to becoming larger every year.

The OP's description is just not accurate.

Name an area and I'll point to a lot of houses far cheaper than that around it.

If you want to buy a house IN San Francisco, ya, the media price went over a million last I heard.

But there are all kinds of areas around it far cheaper. I'd bet houses in the $200K's.

Sorry to hear it. If you need to talk to stay in touch, send a PM I've been to NC and it has some nice things, but ya, I'd really prefer CA for too many things to list.

I was really surprised when you moved to NC. I suspected that you wouldn't be happy long term. Yes, there's a lot to like about the Carolinas...but there's a lot to dislike too. (damn if it doesn't seem like you can say that about almost everywhere.)

California was good to us for many years. Work was plentiful, wages were good, weather was...too fucking hot in the summer, cool and foggy in the winter...but at least it didn't snow.

However, even though I've always been a Democrat, California has just gotten TOO liberal for my tastes. (not all Dems are bleeding heart liberals)
Coupled with the ever-rising illegal immigrant population...with their ever-increasing demands, and the very high crime rate that seems to follow them, when I decided to retire, it was time to go elsewhere.

The town we lived in was #1 in stolen cars for many years...most of that was the hispanic gangs. Drugs, robberies, burglary, car-jackings, and murder were in the paper daily.
Time to GTFO.

That's one city.

There is no perfect place to live in America. People will leave one place and then soon after they move to the next, they will find something else to bitch about, whether it be taxes, the population that lives there, the weather...You name it.

I think if I had to pick some place ideal, maybe SC, along the coast.

By all means, please start naming those places. The Central Valley smog bowl doesn't count, either.
