Getting over fancy CPUs

Is it just me? Back in 2012 - 2014 I spent around 10K easy if not 15K on everything. EVERYTHING. I had i3s, i5s, i7s, ye olde 3930K, fat old Titans, a 780Ti, something something AMD, shiny new cases and mobo's and it was grand. Now I just can't be bothered. It isn't the cash, I could pick up a 7800K right now and I did sell off all those builds anyway so it wasn't THAT much in the end, but still, is anyone else bored?

I sold off a 4770 non K end of 2015 and used a single 5930K that I sold off early 2017 for my now non K 7600 and the level of progress is still static. You still have the shiny shiny but increasingly its just the same old same old. Even gaming I used to smash near every single player AAA but recently 1 or 2 at best each year.

Where did all the fun go?

I dunno. I think it's still there if you look.

In fact, the CPU scene hasn't been this exciting in quite a while.

You've got Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5, Skylake-X, Kaby Lake-X and soon, Ryzen 3 and ThreadRipper and Coffee Lake.

Maybe you're just getting older, and growing out of the hobby?

If you haven't tried a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 CPU, I urge you get to get one, or possibly wait a month or so for ThreadRipper / X399 boards, if you want some sweet 16C/32T action.

You could buy a "Super Rig", and then do Distributed Computing on it. That's what I mostly do these days.

Actually bought a few Steam games off of Newegg for peanuts, and have been playing those sporadically. Got some "PowerA" brand XBox One wired controllers, that conveniently work with Windows 10 without much fuss or hassle.

I am ok for now because there has been very little improvement on the HEDT market since the 5930k. Other than the AMD stuff (Ryzen shakeup, Vega coming, more competition in CPU markets) there isn't anything Interesting out now better than what I have, and I already got an R7 1700 build for Quakecon. I bought a 1080Ti on sale on Labor day I think it was, but other than that, no new toys really.

So I guess you could say that progress is stagnant somewhat, except for Ryzen/Threadripper awesomeness and the beast that is a 1080Ti, but I already got both recently. Only thing I could potentially see myself buying soon would be a better cooler for a better 5930k OC. Or maybe an upgrade for the wraith spire on the 1700.

I will say that the hobby is still as fun as ever though.

One CPU as rare as a unicorn would be the Xeon E5-1691 v3, an (most probably) overclockable 14-core processor. Good luck hunting.

Having enough money to buy everything you want can indeed be a problem. Have you considered going into the more server range of your hobby and dive into the issue of BIOS mods? I'm also currently a bit bored of my hobby, but I see an opportunity to get into BIOS modding of older AMD Opteron boards which currently excites me.

OC old stuff or . . . I dunno, go get some fresh air? I'm still having a blast with my 1800x. Everyone grows out of hobbies eventually, especially ones that move as fast as tech.

Different expensive hobby? I love flying for example. More than computers even, though that's sacriledge around these parts. ;-)

OP I think you should go out some more Those look like symptoms of social deprivation IMO. Everything's boring when you're lonely. Happened to me.
