Is it possible you hooked up the pump wrong?

There's one cable with a single CPU fan connector on it coming off the pump. That gets plugged into the CPU_Fan header on the mobo. There's one cable coming off the pump with 4 fan connectors on it. That's for your radiator/case fans. There's one cable coming off the pump with a SATA power connector on it. That's what powers the pump and attached fans. Lastly you have the USB header. That's what allows their software (CAM) to control the fans and read temperatures and pump data. It will function without that hooked up, you just won't be able to control it via software.

There were actually only 3 cables coming off the pump. The pump cable that goes to the CPU_Fan header, USB header cable, and SATA+Fan cable. The pump cable is what I plugged into the CPU_fan header and tried on the CPU_Opt header.

I'm currently running the system with the stock CPU cooler on the CPU_Opt header at 26 degrees...

As for rushing the build- I had been working on it for over 12 hours by the time I came here for help...

@Ch33zew1z: No, powered down, switched it, powered back up and got the pop with smoke.

@Burpo: Celcius. What would the proper settings be for the individual cores?

Pop with smoke..board is done.
RMA it if you can.
Hopefully your chip is not fried, too.
What PSU?
NM..RIF,That PSU should be OK

I used it all day yesterday with the stock Intel cooler and temps in the 25-40 degree range and it was humming right along. Did some editing in Lightroom and Photoshop and also some modeling in Excel and temps were fine with no other hiccups. Only annoying thing is that the CPU fan needs to be plugged into the CPU_Opt header because the CPU_Fan header doesn't seem to be working (I don't know if it ever was).

The weird thing is that the short was caused when I initially plugged the Kraken into the CPU_Opt header...

Would you still recommend getting another board? What about trying to reinstall the Kraken or should I RMA that as well? Also, as I have no experience with the RMA process, how are they able to determine whether or not the board was initially defective or whether I caused it?

So you have at least one header not working. On a new board, that would be enough to drive me towards a return/ RMA.

In my experience you have to unnaturally push that CPU to get it really hot. I can do video encoding and gaming and it won't get nearly as hot it is will with stress testing.

So it is up to you if you want to swap the cooler for a new one, or just return it and get a decent air unit. This CPU doesn't overclock really well, so a good water cooler is going to have a limited ROI for this chip alone.

When you build a new pc and you area noob at it and also a noob at liquid cooling you gotta remember to also ground yourself and treat the liquid pump as if it was your cars break line and always check for bubbles in the tube because any large bubbles will prevent the liquid from flowing freely as it should. You may need to visit youtube and search on how to remove air from the system. Oh never mind here is a video since it is saint pattys day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPziRpPKnfw
