Getting rid of Cellular service.

I'm sick of cellular service. I'm sick of people assuming I should be available 24/7. I'm ready for a change.

So I want to get some kind of VoIP service that I can use from my PC as well as from a Wifi enabled phone. It would be nice if the phone had a cellular chip in it for emergency/911 access if needed.

I'm guessing an 802.11 phone with skype is the way to go. They sell a Belkin (~100$) and Netgear(~150$) device that look like they would do the trick.

Any suggestions?

Seems like a huge inconvience just to avoid talking to people. You do realize you can turn the phone off or just not answer it cell phone if you don't feel like talking. That's what I do.

I'd stay away from Belkin their support is crap.

Last I looked, the WiFi phones were still first gen and had some bugs, have you considered one of the Nokia n8xxx tablets?

Yeah, an N800 running Skype would work. Or any device that can run Fring.


You could roll your own SIP service using one of the SIP resellers and get a VOIP box that supports SIP like a Linksys PAP2-NA (home phone) and/or then a gizmo that supports SIP over WiFi (WiFi "cell" phone).

For SIP resellers, there's a ton out there. The ones that I would recommend all appear to have disappeared (I used to use Mutualphone and I like them... cheap and the quality was pretty good but they seem to have stopped selling to end users), fonosip is supposed to be ok. Find some contractless, pre-paid SIP service and then load it into a Linksys PAP2 and a device running Fring and you are set up for cheap calls with no monthly free.

most wm6.1 phones come with a built in voip ( sip) client which you can configure and use with your voip provider's account (vonage, broadvoice etc )
