Getting rid of ICQ banners in icq2000b

why... why did they go and put banners in icq.... I can't believe I am going to say this but I think I prefer MSN because it is so simple. Anyway is there a way to get rid of the stupid banners (especially the ones at the bottoms of the send message dialog box). I was trying to find it in the preferences but I couldn't.

and yes, it sucks they made the banner thingy.... i was going to use trillian for my messaging, but i like some icq features better (eg: popup on message), so i'll have to stick around

no, thank SonOfZeuz -- he's the owner of the webpage, and he posted updates on the page quite often. i'm just re-posting the resources i used to get rid of the banner....

and yah, i didn't get the packages. i just follow the steps to kill atebrowser and i have that blank page hanging below.. but since i put the message box down below, i won't get to see it anyway.....

get a program called AtGuard which was bought by Norton Internet Security v3.0 you won't get ANY adds anymore.

Atguard was (and still is) a pretty good firewall but it is not very good at getting rid of ads (gets rid of some banner ads but thats all), It will not do anything about the ICQ ads.

If you want rid of the ads in;
ICQ HERE
AIM HERE
Web Pages HERE (look for Proxomitron, works great)

I'm using Norton Internet Security 2001 and it's pretty good at getting rid of ads, don't see them in icq or here for that matter.

what? I have never seen a website or an ICQ add with NIS 2001 v3 ok I havent used atguard since it was taken over by Norton but still.

Yes it is, are you trying to say Norton will allow ICQ access from a certain IP and port yet block that same ip and port when it trys to get the ads?

Like i said, give it time, you will have ads and banners on your ICQ and theres nothing Norton can do about it.

BTW i do like the Norton Firewall although atguard was better and less bloated.

Most, if not all Norton products are resource hoging bloatware. and thats not just an opinion, its a well known fact.

One you do get the banners and ads, i have a site that will help you

I dislike resource hungry norton products. Using them as once once apps, they work very very well. As always on apps, they are very "microsoftish"

LOL Norton Firewall IS Atguard but with the Norton interface along with a few improvements.

Yes that's why they purchased Atguard. Unlike other's like Zonealarms and Balckice, NIS software also has ActiveX, JAVA, and Scripting Filters and is developed in such a way as to allow the cookie, ActiveX, Java, Scrips or ports to come in but to not go out or filter what goes out. As far as icq is concerned it thinks that you are seeing the adds. Most cookie managers or add blockers prevent the cookie or ports to come in and that's the problem. The secret is to make it believe that it's coming in and this is where Norton shines over the others.

You need seperate Firewall+Addbusters+Antivirus+Antispyware+cookie_managers and still don't have ActiveX, JAVA, and Scripting Filters.

NIS 2001 v3 has all of that but yet your telling me that it's bloatware !!! C'mon....

I used your page after finding a link in this thread to it postosted by stndn. I used Reshack like you said to totally remove the banner boxes, too. It was easy and your instructions very detailed. I would still like to know where you found that wood skin for ICQ. That is one of the best I have seen and couldn't find one to compare.

Try reading between the lines (its not that hard)

I know Atgaurd was bought by by Norton, hence the comparison between Norton and Atguard. Atguard was an excellent firewall, its just too bad Norton got ahold of it.
Norton products have caused about as much grief for people as AOHELL has.

I used atgaurd and you can not stop ICQ from displaying the banner boxes that the ads go in, you can stop some of the ads from downloading by blocking access to cb.icq.com and cf.icq.com but you will still have the ugly banner boxes. Thats where ICQ Adbusters shines as you are modifying the ICQ Client so that there are no banners or ads (and some other goodies)

And YES i do believe all Norton products are Resource sucking BLOATWARE.
If you are happy with Norton then by all means use it.

The only thing i use for web page ads is Proxomitron, its free and does a lot more about web page ads than any firewall will do.

i *think* one of the things that SonOfZeuz's software does is that it also get rid of the white box where the ad is supposed to be ... i dunno, since i didn't use the software (i just leave the white box out there), but my friend told me it works that way....

UMMM try actually reading the posts.
There are many ways to stop the ads from showing including the use of a firewall. The firewalls will NOT get rid of the boxes where the ads would be.

The method at my site will get rid of the ads AND the banner boxes.
The ICQ PowerCrack will;

Gets rid of the Ads and Banners in ICQ 2000b by replacing the Ad Infested DLL's in your ICQ folder.

Changes "AutoUpdate" to "NO"

Gets rid of the "SMS" Ads

Gets rid of ICQ Phone ads.

Allows you to add contacts without authorization "AutoAuthorize"

Shows IP Addresses of all your contacts in info (icq99 style)

Stops ICQ from adding "From ICQ" to IE favorites

eliminates the NEW Banners in the SMS windows.

Is this explanation clear enough for you or shall i add pictures?
