I need a new furnace if you go to vacation near Chicago and then miss installing furnaces.

Getting into HVAC has crossed my mind if ever I lose my job. Lot more work physically compared to a desk job, but decent money, and once you know the systems it's fairly routine. Furnaces are surprisingly not as complicated as they look when you first open them. A/C units a re a bit more involved when it comes to dealing with the actual refrigerant, but probably not that hard with right tools.

I can't help but laugh at these companies that want to rent hvac equipment out for like $100/mo. "but if it breaks it wont cost you anything!" That's a big if. The pressure switch in mine started to act up last year, I was using crocodile clips to "kick start" the furnace (switch was stuck open, so it would fail the startup check) while I get time to find one. I got a new one form a local hvac place for about $60 and replaced it in about 15 minutes. As a HVAC tech I could charge someone $300 + parts + tax for that call.

I have a forced air system that's not working. I can hear the relay click in the thermostat and there's a 60 cycle hum, but nothing else. I suspect it's the air handler, but I have not idea how to confirm that, any tips? There's no diagnostic light...

The ultimate of bullshit hapenned today. The perfect storm. literally. The most rain i've ever seen and dealing with a boiler system. I spent 5 hours mopping a back room because a leak coming thru the foundation wall and ...not even my job but you got to keep the customer happy..that customer is fucked now after I left. It's still raining.

Easy money though. Installing them is fairly routine, and homeowners are generally oblivious to how much the heating/cooling companies are buying them for and marking them up. Making money on the purchase, and making money on the install.

Most things are pretty easy money in theory.

Mayne, you should start your own HVAC business, then you can work as much as you want!

After going to Job Corp for a year and three moths to the damn date. Flying out and making the turn over the city below, I said I'm NEVER coming back you fuckers. LOL I guess at the time my anger was more with Job Corp and their BS more so then the fine Mormon folks below me. But I vowed never to even fly over that state. Only doing so in the Sim on my trips to KLAS. LOL

Hmmm like 60hz sound like a transformer? If you take the panel off you'll see a black motor with a small flywheel on it, does that spin up at all? Try to spin it manually see if the 60hz hum changes, I wonder if the motor is fubar, or the capacitor for it.

Though what you could also do is when it's doing it, look for a flashing LED on the circuit board, you may have to open up the blower compartment and hold down the safety switch, though on my furnace there's a small window where I can see the LED so don't have to take the cover off. Basically it will flash in a certain pattern like long long short short short, record that and somewhere on the panel cover or other area should be an error code table. That's pretty much how I figured out my issue.

There is also a 24v transformer in the furnace for the thermostat, maybe it's shorted out somewhere so when the thermostat relay clicks it's just shorting out the transformer and it's humming. Though that would require quite a wire fault...

I guess try to figure out exactly where the hum comes from and go from there.

I'm not an expert mind you, I just figure these things out as I go, but this is my educated guess.

There's physically no diagnostic light or there is no light pulse code? Furnaces have quit a few sensors and it could be one of those.

Which one? Clearfield or Weber Basin?

Clearfield. Wish it was Weber. I heard they were more strict with being controlled federally rather then Clearfiled being controlled by an out to make money employment company. Boy do I have the stories. In one instance I was going to box up the spent condoms and needles I found on the ground and send them to the Department Of Labor.

If your a young punk reading this, stay the hell away from Clearfeild! They have new dorms now, but I bet they are still just as corrupt and full of BS.

One thing I learned being there is that every Tuesday I think it was. We got new fuck ups. I mean this country is full of adolescent kids. Holy shit! Some of whom are court ordered there and don't give a shit. Almost got terminated by the possible fist throws.

And BTW, the food sucked ass! I knew a guy there that was medicaly dischraged from the Navy and for some reason ended up in that shit hole and siad the Navy feed you right. Almost went into the Navy myself, but was convinced to fill out for a Pell Grant. Never did as I didn't want to be there in Job Corp anymore and I kick myself for not joining the Navy. And here all my friends were saying do it, I am, there's not going to be any war or anything. Year goes by and 9/11. Boy has shit changed.
