Getting system to recognize hard drive

Hi,

My P4, xp pro system is having some major hardware (cpu, motherboard, or something) problems. I have just a couple of months before my warranty runs out. I am going to send the machine back to gateway to determine the problem, but first I want to get important information and photos backed up from my harddrive.

I also have a second system, a seven year old gateway with Win 98. That machine only has 98mg of ram and a 3gb harddrive. Since my P4 won't run, I want to put the harddrive into the older machine, just so that I can use the USB port to transfer the data to my portible Xdrive pro which has 40gb of space. I use the xdrive pro at photoshoots to quickly swap photos off of CF cards, and then back into the camera.

I unplugged the cd drives off of the old machine and plugged the P4's harddrive into the same eide ribbon. When I reboot the old machine, as the screen starts up, it sees the original harddrive and the hard drive from my P4. However, after everything is booted and I go into "my computer", I do not see the P4's drive.

When I look in bios, it sees the original drive as primary Ide Master and the drive from the P4 as Secondary master. In advanced configuration, both drives are auto configured and auto detected on Ide Translation mode, Multiple sector settings and fast programmed I/O modes.

What do I need to do to get the system to recognize the P4's drive such that I can see and access it thru "my computer"?

if the hard drive from your xp pro machine was formatted in ntfs, then windows 98 which does not have any official support for ntfs.
But there is a free utility that will allow you to Read from ntfs drives. NTFS Reader for Windows 98
its fairly easy to setup and will need to copy files from the xp cd

Thank you Dahak,

I see from that program, that I first need to get some xp files that win98 will need to run that program. I will have to see if I can get these off a computer at work, since my current xp machine will not run long enough.

Also, I think I just fubared my harddrive. I had the xp's harddrive, plugged in as a secondary master on the 98 machine. Thinking that I needed to put that hard drive back in the xp machine to see if I could keep it up long enough to download those files, I (without thinking) unplugged that xp harddrive while the system was still powered. I then put it in the xp machine and powered up. I started to boot windows and stopped. Now it won't even try to boot windows. Talk about a bad day, lol.

Dahak, Thanks again for making me aware of the software allowing win 98 to see XP pro drives. I finally got the Fat drive squared away today and am getting my xp pro drive copied over to a portible harddrive until I get my machine fixed. Most of the stuff is moved. I want to also save and later reload, my saved sent and received outlook emails. I just have to determine where those files are located on the harddrive.
