Getting the best dial up connection?

I just reformatted and installed her software,everything works fine except internet explorer seems so slow even going from page to page.How can I check that she's getting the best possiable speeds for her dialup connection?

Computer specs are 533 celeron,256 mem,64 mg pci video card,usr5660a-bp modem,win2k pro.Her ipc is peoplepc and whenever I log on the modem shows 44 to 45k connection.

let me take a guess, you've got broadband right? I suspect it seems uber slow to you cause you've forgotten why the phrase world-wide-wait was invented...

from what I remember of dial up, speeds of 40 to 50K are the norm and even if you manage to connect at over 50K the technology allows for the speeds to vary depending on line quality

yeah.. the most you'll hit is like 5K downloading a file. that "accelerated" dialup is pure crap too. most of them just adjust your browser's cach to cach things so you don't have to redownload images all the time. yeah, some will use better compression, but it isn't worth it. sometimes you won't even notice a difference.

but yeah, back to the topic. uncie bob said it best. you're used to broadband, so of course dialup is gonna seem unbearably slow to you.

that is a bit of a long wait - what other traffic is going through your modem?
have you got a firewall installed?
What time of day did you get this slow connection?
can you run adaware and spybot as well as your antivirus - in safe mode - do scans of all 3

Man that peoplepc stuff is all spyware.Plus she had viruses.Cleaned with housecall,spybot and adaware.P
Installed earthlink to check things out,Ran allot better.The phone company in her area offers 3 different levels of dsl.Middle one is only $20 more per month than she's paying now.I think she'll be real happy with it.Again very many thanks for all the help.
